A short review of the famous Dachstien Guide Sweater, an excellent item of woollen clothing for practising bushcraft in the winter woods. We also talk about why natural fibres are the "natural choice" for bushcraft. I hope you enjoy.

I bought a similar Canadian military version many many years ago at my local surplus for $20. I tested it for a few weeks in my teen years, blasting around on snowmobiles in the Canadian winter for days on end with nothing but a dogs weight in whiskey and a pack of pepperoni to survive on. Later I went back to that surplus store and bought 3 more. I still have them and use them every winter for the past 20 years. Working through the Alberta oilfield winters I've worn them under my coveralls, even standing on the top rack in the blistering wind while disassembling and fixing some transmitter or frozen section of pipe, they kept me warm. Day to day I wear one under a simple windproof jacket and unless I'm going to be sitting still, I don't need anything more than that down to about -20°C. I ordered this Austrian version to test out next, albeit at a hefty price of $120. I've been testing out some of the more expensive well-known Anoraks and bush shirts for the past couple years and they've been a big disappointment. You do NOT get what you paid for with mainstream wool companies in my opinion, and they seem to be more of a "bushcraft fashion" item than a practical piece of gear. They're all less than half the thickness of the military sweaters, more like 1/4 the thickness. Plus they're completely flat, whereas the military sweater is knit so that there are air pockets and undulations to trap AIR between it and your next layer. The fancy anoraks are all hard to put on and take off for sweat management, don't take a spark nearly as well as they claim, don't do anything for even a slight breeze which is very important when it's below -20, just overall aren't very warm! I think they'd be better in a warmer humid environment like a coastal winter, where it's only a degree or so below freezing but often wet and rainy. I can wear one of the fancy anoraks in my living room sitting on the couch at 21°C and be comfortable. If I put on one of the military wool sweaters, I'm uncomfortably hot and start to sweat in minutes and have to take it off. Pretty much says it all right there.

I live in Norway and have my fair share of wool sweaters, but the Dachstein is what I use for the coldest days. It's a little heavy, but so thick and strong. Worth every penny.

I lucked up and scored a like new cardigan of this sweater! almost weatherproof! weighs a ton, but feels like a feather when you don't have to wear multiple layers when hiking or hunting because its warm, it breathes, it is water repellent and kinda wind resistant

Looks like an excellent piece of gear. I shop a lot and army surplus stores too. I find excellent items at times. I can appreciate that it covers your backside and won't ride up. That is important on a cold day. Thanks for showing this particular item.

Looks like a good jumper. The Norwegian army ones are worth a look as well.

I got one after having watched this video. I found it heavy and not well fitting (built for Schwarzenegger types so looked a bit silly with my size, lots of folds in upper arms and chest area). Also a bit scratchy I guess. So I put it away and forgot about it. This winter I have had the heating turned down to save some money and pulled this jumper out to try it again. Now I love it! Not a fashion item but is so cosy with a merino base layer or two underneath. I’ve worn it practically every day and miss it when I don’t have it on. The folds up too probably help to trap a bit more air too. Highly recommended and thank you for the video. I got it in eBay.

Thanks for letting me know how you got on. It is a great bit of kit, but our recent winters haven't been cold enough to use mine really.

If it wasn't for the crate full of wool sweaters I already have, I'd probably buy one. As it stands, I'll say their wool gloves, hats, and socks are no laughing manner. Their wool puts Filson's Mackinaw wool to shame.

@@gregkosinski2303regardless. Filson is dead to me. Overpriced hipster crap. Utter garbage for what ya get. And 74% isn’t even made in the US anymore! Sad! I guess that’s the problem with investors. Raise capital and profit, whilst driving down operational costs and overhead. How could that possibly be a sustainable and worthwhile economic system? As a person who got their masters in Econ, I’d say that’s a recipe for disaster…

I have some of them in green from the austrian army and gray from the alpine police or ambulance units and I love both. Good pieces are very rare and difficult to get also here in Austria. But there are traders here in Austria they sell a good copy for a good price. Its not the original but it works. www.steinadler.com/de/shop/bekleidung/jacken-und-shirts/miltec-alpinpullover

Can anyone help me out? I was wondering if this sweater is worth $70 USD (Not sure what that is in pounds) I found a seller or two. I missed the big batch that came in from that swiss army shop (the only other vid on KZbin that has the two guys showing off the sweater) I don't have many wool sweaters right now, and I'm outside quite a bit. Though not as much as last year. I can't decide if it's worth the Benjamin's?

it’s worth more than 70. this sweater sells for nearly 400 new, and for the people with the money to spare even that’s worth it to have such a great sweater. highly recommend. love mine very much.
