Dacia Duster Crash Test - REALLY Safe??

It's painfully obvious that many commenters don't understand the NCAP point system. This is actually a pretty safe car - even the side pole test went ok (it's supposed to deform like that to absorb energy). The car lost stars primarily because it will hurt OTHER cars/bikers/pedestrians in a crash. Sure, that's not good for THE OTHER PARTY in an accident but it's not bad for the people INSIDE THE DUSTER. Today NCAP doesn't rate a car's safety just for it's passengers. It rates a car's safety for all parties implicated in a crash. You don't want to be hit by a Duster.

In real life when that happens it happens at way over the speed limit speeds, and basic rule from what I see on the news, cars don't stand a chance against trees. Poles nowadays are easyly broken by cars, trees are like the only ones that really don't move. And most of the time even in luxury cars they are all dead and the car really bent around the tree.

If you crash that hard you're not safe in any car ever constructed ! it's the sudden stop that kills you ! It handles pretty well as far as i can see. Still a very good car, Dacia makes good cars at good prices, prices all cars should practice . You take a Duster, you put a VW on it and sell it with 10 000 more. That's what others do. Did you notice guys that for the side impact they didn't align the car to hit at the B-pillar point but instead, was alligned to hit in the middle of the front door? All the other cars I've watched have been aligned to hit spot on the B-pillar ( the pillar between the front and rear doors) Now, of course that if the car would hit at the B-pillar would be much stronger and absorb the shock much better. But if you hit right in the middle of the fron door...there's nothing to take the impact...not in a Dacia, nor in a Volvo. So considering that, the car actually did pretty well.

It points towards the chest and head area, usually in front of the b pillar. Waht makes cars stronger here is a good connection between pillar and door, which is actually a challenge for the engineers.

if you add emergency breaking and other avoidance systems it has 4/5 stars. The front crash test is absolutly normal . Only the side crash test is not as good as 5 stars but you survive .

Its because dacia is a budget brand and their basic model omits the extra safety options which are standard on the renault duster. Truth is most dusters wont be the basic model so will have the same safety as the renault - when you sell it make that clear.

Apparently they base the score on the lowest model. The lowest model does not even have a radio. The higher models have lots more safety equipment and would be rated much higher. Lowest model is for farmers. Higher models for everyone else!

The version with ABS , ESP ... etc has 4 Stars . The standard version (as tested ) does not include all electric safety systems , and that's why is has only 3 .

Not even close, ABS and ESP are mandatory on new vehicles in Europe since 2004 and 2014 respectively meaning that it does not enter anymore as criterion. I don't see any reason why an European organism would test a model that is not fit for their market. As stated in the report, the Dacia gets a relatively low score in the different crash tests even though they are tested with all the safety equipment available. When the you compare with another small SUV, the Kia Stonic which has 3 stars in its normal configuration and 5 stars with its "Safety Pack", the difference lies in the presence of active assistance (lane departure, radar for incoming pedestrans, autobrake, etc.) without any change regarding to the crash result.

If you look at many cars that score well because of electronic aids there crash performance isn't great. Look at the original Land Rover Evoke 2011 ncap test the offset front crash had the A Pillar move back quite badly and front drivers door pop out as a result, as for the Pole test that also looked alarming and was not rated as Good like the Duster. People must take note the test gets harder and harder each year meaning the Duster would be safe minus the electronic then the Evoke of 2011. This doesn't stop the badge snobs buying them even if the are unreliable and have suspect structural safety.

It doesn´t have front antiroll pilars, if it makes rollover the b and c pilar absorb the impact. For that it is so bad in the pole test, because the a pilar is not strong. It is better the cars with front antiroll pilars.

It has the same problem as all recent Dacia cars, on impact the driver's and passenger's head bounce back under the head rest, thus breaking your neck. And that's at 50km/h

It seems to go to the side but I agree your point. It's a shame because some of these are small details (like a reshaped head restraint) which could be improved at relatively little cost. It's not difficult to see how more attention to detail could get it up to 4 stars. To reach 5 would require the installation of more electronic safety systems adding 1 or 2K to the price. Might be worth it though as they must be losing customers because of safety concerns.

I have saw more people dead in Mercedes or BMW than in a Dacia. Those 3 stars are irrelevant. There are some features that Dacia didn't put on their car such as stickers or stuff like that and they give it 3 stars. If you look at the cockpit shell you will see that the car structure remain intact.

Hello, yes it is the same as in România where is produced but the motorization may not be the same FOR example because we are in the EU we have restrictions FOR engine 1.6 petrol 105 cp MAX 150 and 1.5 diesel from 90cp to 110 and thats a shame for other non Eu country ex: Russia or Brazil we produce Duster up to 2.0 L 150 cp petrol or diesel

In Brasil Dacia is Renault, the size are the same, but engines and gearbox aren't.
