Looks good. I would change the order in how you did things. Stain first, paint portion going into cement. Add the hardware that hold the lights and any other brackets. THEN place into cement. Less time on a ladder. Easier to do all work from the ground.

I know your video is a year old but I wanted to say thanks. I was able to do 4 posts and hang the lights in one day. They look awesome. I was able to skip the 2x4 with bracket step in place of a 12 year old holding the 4x4. That quikrete dries fast! I also recommend anyone finding this video to get the "string light installation kit" . Well worth it for hanging your lights and prevents the sag. And I also got some post cap solar lights. Anyway, thanks again!

Thank you for the video. I need two of those planters to attach a side of a sail canopy awning fabric cloth screen. I had not used gorilla glue before and one of the 2 x 4 pop off of the planter when I attached the 4 x 4. Because the bottom of the planter I am using had an indented base I just use flat screws to reattached the 2 x 4 to the base. That worked just fine. Again thanks.

Good info. Thanks for sharing!
@marymlodzinska43834 ай бұрын
It's 3 years after this was originally posted but I found this update today for anyone interested. Not surprised that the gorilla glue did not hold. I spent the entire day talking with the glue manufacturers, PL adhesive, loctite, gorilla etc. The word is that glue will NOT stick to these resin buckets. Trust me on that. I was hoping to glue an L bracket on either side of the wood onto the bucket itself. But the answer is NO. So now I am back to having to consider pouring concrete, which as a single 72 year old woman, I was hoping to avoid. But I think I'm going to do a lot less than I'm seeing in all of these videos, just something to stabilize the centerpiece. And I saw on a different video the suggestion of using landscape timber instead of a 4x4. It's about 2 and 1/2 by 3 1/2, just a little bit smaller, but lighter to lift, and half the cost. So that is my planned approach to do this weekend, first weekend August 2024.
@daddoesvideos4 ай бұрын
@marymlodzinska4383 Good luck. Certainly, be interested to hear how it goes. I understand using less concrete, but you want to have enough in there so it holds the post and makes the bucket resistant to wind.

@daddoesvideos3 жыл бұрын
Hey there. Thanks for watching! Yes, using the drill at that point is a little tight. Mine barely fit. Just keep in mind that your screws don’t need to be perfectly flush or anything like that. It’s just a way to stabilize the post a bit. You don’t absolutely need the 2x4 on the bottom if you are able to have a friend keep the post steady while you are mixing the concrete. After that, you can then make sure the post is straight by using scrap 2x4s to keep it in place.

Potentially dumb question: do you just leave the extension cord plugged in at all times? Is that safe to do outside?

Not dumb at all. Yes, I leave it in. It’s an outdoor extension cord and it’s plugged into a GFCI-protected outlet.

does it feel pretty stable with the 2 bags of concrete each barrel? i am fixing to do this same project on my deck, and have been debating if it will be sturdy enough to not tip. i do love the 2x4 idea, it gives more of a base to support with the concrete. have not seen others use the 2x4 idea, but i will. i am just debating on if i should also just run a couple of deck screws thru the 2x4 into my deck for added safety. i am also adding a wind sail for shade to mine, it was pretty inexpensive on amazon. great video, the lights look awesome. i cant wait to build this on my deck.
@daddoesvideos2 жыл бұрын
Oh nice. A wind sail would be cool. I’ve had no issues with the planters. That’s 100 lbs of concrete in each one. They don’t move at all, and we’ve had 65 mph winds come through a few times. Good luck!

@@daddoesvideos the reason I ask is we live in a very windy area and I tried to use pop-up canopy and it became a kite.
@daddoesvideos2 жыл бұрын
@@robertk9936 Ahh, yeh. I could see how that might not go well. I would think attaching a sail would work. If you put 100 lbs of concrete in the planters, it’s going to take a lot more than a windy day to move them.

Looks really nice. Good video. You posted this awhile ago, do you have any updates on how the project handles windy weather or did you have any problems with them staying upright?
@daddoesvideos3 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for the feedback! No problems at all with them. The concrete in the barrels weighs those down enough that they aren’t going anywhere. And I like the closed hooks I used for the string lights attached to the posts. Those ensure the lights aren’t flying off in high winds - and we’ve had a bit of that over the past month or so!

We finished this project and now have to do the drainage holes. My husband is nervous that it will crack the pot. Do you have any suggestions?
@daddoesvideos3 жыл бұрын
Hey there. If you got the resin ones, they won’t crack. (That’s the nice thing about using resin pots.) Just drill slightly above the cement line in the pot. You’ll just end up with a small hole where the water can drain.

Is their a way to install a sturdy bracket so can replace the 4x4’s when they eventually rot? It’s seems the ones I found remotely close aren’t strong enough
@daddoesvideos3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for watching. I’m not sure you’d be able to replace since the concrete locks them in. But if you use a sealer (and reapply when needed) on the posts, they should last for quite a while.
@vishicha3 жыл бұрын
Did you use Pressure Treated or untreated 4X4? I am in CO and weather here goes to extreme on hot and cold side with snow so want to know.
@daddoesvideos3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I used pressure treated. I’m in Ohio. So we get our share of 90+ days and plenty of snow and cold in the winter. The posts are perfectly fine after a year or so. Good luck!
