open.spotify.com/album/0bUTHl...
Demon Days is the second studio album by British virtual band Gorillaz. It was first released on 11 May 2005 in Japan and on 23 May 2005 in the United Kingdom by Parlophone and in the United States by Virgin Records. Produced by the band, Danger Mouse, Jason Cox, and James Dring, the album features contributions from De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley-Bird, Roots Manuva, MF Doom, Ike Turner, Bootie Brown of the Pharcyde, Shaun Ryder, and Dennis Hopper. As with the band's eponymous 2001 debut, the release of Demon Days and its respective live performances were both accompanied by various multimedia, including interactive features on the Gorillaz website, a total of four animated music videos, and animatics for select videos. Almost all visuals associated with the album were designed by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett, under his design company Zombie Flesh Eaters.

Oh wow the comment made during DARE about the male vocalist being a drunk British guy in the club. You've actually pretty much hit the nail on the head. That's Shaun Ryder the lead singer of Happy Monday's - a pretty iconic British 80/90's Dance band. There's a video of Gorillaz doing this song live and he is on stage absolutely smashed and out of time. It pretty much sums him up.

If we had some mainstream bands today that adopted the digital persona's, marketing lore, the 3d projection technology or even some of their sound then maybe you could say they are ahead of their time, but I would instead say they are a truly iconic band that actually transcend just the quality of their influence on later groups!

With respect to the thematic of the album, I think Damon said that it's supposed to represent a full night from dusk til dawn. Being the penultimate track, the more dark and hopeless and the final track more hopeful, symbolising the rise of the sun, you can see this in the chorus that sings "Turn yourself around into the sun" in the final track.

Glad to see the appreciation for El Mañana. That's my favorite track on Demon Days too, really rides the line of melancholy-yet-upbeat in a way that's pretty unique to Gorillaz. Not to mention the bass tone is filthy, I love how it contrasts with the shimmery ambient synths. My favorite Gorillaz track is Empire Ants, which I think occupies a similar space on Plastic Beach as El Mañana does on Demon Days. Good comment. Demon Dayz also touches on heavy themes like the Iraq war, enviromentalism and industrialization. I don't think that Im alone in feeling this album captures the major "vibe" of early 2000s. And to some degree I feel very nostalgic to that era.

I have loved Gorillaz since the very day they released Clint Eastwood into the world in 2002. I heard it once late late at night, thought 'that's the weirdest thing I've ever heard' and then it was stuck in my head for the following days until I had to ask around as to who it was. Lucky one of my friends knew and I've been obsessed ever since. I went to see them live a few years ago and it ranks up there in my top 5 live performances ever, such an awesome stage show! I am absolutely thrilled that not only is Albarn still making new music under this brand 20 years later, but that they're reaching such a fantastic, diverse and *young* audience! I'm approaching 50, and my 15 year old nephew loves them and wears Demon Days tee shirts! :D Now I have to go listen to this in full!

@@benkeates5396 When you say it shouldn't have been a part of Gorillaz it makes me assume that your problem with the album is a problem many people have with it. That problem was that fans didn't like how little 2D there was. But Gorillaz always had guest artists featured on like 1/3 of the songs in every album; so they simply took an already established element from their previous work and turned it up to eleven. So it doesn't make sense to me when people complain about Humanz having so little 2D when that was the whole point of the album, according to Damon Albarn himself.

Feel the same - Plastic Beach grows on me more and more, there’s a lot of gold in there and I’m not sure if any track will envelope me in warm comforting bass as much as Stylo… but nothing compares to Demon Days. This was a problem for me when I was young, but as I got older my taste in music matured through the the punk, R&B, jazz, rock and others. The first album that I ever bought on a cd, was Demon Days by the Gorillaz. I lived on this album and now I get emotional every time I hear this albums. I was 20 when I saw them live. The important thing about 'El Mañana' is that it is used within the story of the band as a central storytelling device in the video clip basically being the story of Noodle being attacked and on the next album 'On Melancholy Hill' served as a sequel of sorts.. I would argue that it is a big song and was a single I believe just is more of a major fan song than a mainstream hit same with On Melancholy Hill. Also I'd consider the last three songs a trilogy of sorts.

I've also thought for a while that cage the elephant could be really fun, maybe starting with "tell me i'm pretty" since I think it has a lot of elements that sound quite radiohead inspired, "how are you true" sounds very inspired. Visiting the 2008 self titled Cage the Elephant afterwards would be amazing.
