Fun fact!: through this album, J.Cole raps through the perspective of his deceased best friend ”James” , describing his journey from drug dealing to having a family. Cole actually dedicated this album to his friend’s daughter, Nina, essentially as a tribute to her father. This is such an amazing storytelling album, one of the best from 2016.. Thanks for all the amazing content, guys, we really appreciate you!!

Some insight on the track Neighbors, J Cole talks about a real story about his neighbors thinking he's selling drugs. After getting famous and money, he moved into a nicer neighborhood, majority white. After moving in, his neighbors became skeptical about him, probably because he is black, has dreads, and quiet, so they believed he was selling drugs out of the house. Somehow they got enough "evidence" for the police to get a warrant to break into his house and search it for drugs, just to find absolutely nothing. J Cole realized he made a mistake moving into a community like that and moved out, but he had security cameras that recorded the entire SWAT operation and decided to use it as the footage for his music video of the song.

In the beginning James had his doubts about the world he lives in with being hard etc cause he had nothing really to strive for and since he fell in love with a woman he found something. he started to see life more clearly and wanted to let his past behind but there were people that wanted to see him dead in this hood(theres even a line with "peeking through the blinds(which means looking out for danger in his new home and even being accustomed to look out for things like that), i see the sun now"(dont seeing something, believing in his new life)) and after his daughter was born he wants his daughter not to have a life like his with a dead father and repeating the cycle. so he tells his story to j. cole.

Backstory on Neighbors: Cole actually moved into a house where he would record music and relax with his friends/label mates. It was in a really ritzy neighborhood and the neighbors actually called the cops on him for thinking he was selling weed out of the house (they were just smoking it) and Swat actually raided the place due to the call.

Great reaction, glad you loved this album. At the time this was released from what I remembered it wasn’t very liked, people painted it as boring, even at my age at that time I couldn’t quite grasp how great the album was. Years later and it aged like fine wine to me such such great story telling. This album is mostly in the perspective of his dead friend who at first was ready to let his life go and just live that fast life, met and got his girl pregnant and started to see life differently, had a daughter and is now seeing what life has to offer, ultimately his past catches up with him leaving his daughter, crazy twist. Not 100% sure but when the beat changes that’s j Cole rapping and not his friend idk if that make sense 😂
