It's really not. Of course, you're welcome to your own opinion... but I truly feel that Hunger on Hillside is *OBJECTIVELY* not "one of Cole's best songs." It's not even top 3-5 on the album, so it's already *virtually* out of the realm of Cole's best songs. As for "perfect" outros to an album, like @frozenpizzaking is implying... it's really not even that... "4 Your Eyez Only" and "Love Yourz" are MUCH closer to perfect album endings in Cole's discography, alone... (as to not even have to bring up examples of *TRULY* perfect album outros.) Just because a song is good and you like it, doesn't mean that it's the "best" in any regard.

The Climb Back is easily a top 5 Cole song People hear it and initially focus on the incredible flow and amazing lyricism (which I do, personally, believe that verse 2 is one of Cole's greatest verses) but a lot of people miss that the beat is actively meant to sound like it's climbing up, falling, and climbing back up... And Cole, throughout most of the song, has his flow and LYRICS directly reflect the "climbs" and "falls" of the instrumental.

this album means so much to me, i got into hip hop pretty late and this was the first big release that i was around for, i had heard a few j cole songs but this was the first album of his (and maybe hiphop album as a whole?) that i sat down and listened to front to back and it stuck with me even to this day, even my mom sings the "and winters was coOOOLD" part in amari and hunger on hillside is such an inspiring track that still hits me to this day. honestly tied with 4YEO for my favorite cole project. so nostalgic.

I love how Cole reminds you of Nas, what you might not know is that Cole's idol throughout his career has been Nas. Back in the day when Cole was coming up as a rapper, he was often compared as the new Nas due to him being more lyrical and speaking about some true shit. Later he made a song that was more radio playable called "Work out" which Nas had commented on he didn't like and was dissapointed, which led Cole to later make a song on his "Born Sinner" album called "Let Nas Down" which is another banger and a half. If you ever listen to the album (please do), please listen to the Remix version tho where Nas himself hops on and explains his viewpoint on the comment and the whole Rap game.

I think it’s funny after applying pressure they go on a little tangent on how they love how humble Cole is. And then punchin the clock comes on and one of his first bars is “I got more cribs than habitat for humanity”.

Great Reaction!! You missed one important thing: On let go my hand, Kevin rightly recognizes Puffy's voice in the outro and you both say there might be a connection. This was going viral at one point: In August 2013, rumors surfaced that J. Cole and Puff Daddy fought at an MTV Music Awards after-party in New York. Puff had argued with Kendrick Lamar over his “King of New York” claim on 2013’s “Control,” and attempted to pour a drink on him. J. Cole, a friend of Kendrick, intervened, which led to a scuffle between Cole and Puff’s crew. On let go my hand he raps: "My last scrap was with Puff Daddy, who would've thought it? I bought that nigga album in seventh grade and played it so much You would've thought my favorite rapper was Puff" In the end, he hops on the outro, as Kevin recognized. When the album dropped, Cole and Diddy also posted a picture of them were they having fun as they would fight. Thats the story! Hope you read it. Keep going!!!

So glad you finally got around to this album! It's wild to think that this was the first J Cole album to have features on it since Born Sinner, the running joke was that he was the only rapper that could go platinum without any features. Before this dropped he also went on non dreamville artists tracks as a feature as well, the last one was actually Family and Loyalty by Gangstarr (great track & album). The Interlude was actually the 1st single and that transition kinda blew up The Platform Formerly Known As Twitter. 🤣 I also think you need to give KOD another chance, it was his attempt to mimic popular hip hop at the time to help connect with the new generation of hip hop, it's actually kind of a deep album.

Yeah, I feel like this album gets somewhat forgotten, even by me and I LOVE it lol. It's always a great listen from start to finish. Maybe a victim of coming out when Tyler's album came out. But man this is one of my top 3 fave Cole projects easily.
