I explained real hiphop to my dad through multiple songs and albums and after he started to understand, he's been searching for new stuff constantly. He was a BIG TIME hater of rap because he thought it was "just mumbling over a song" until I showed him actual hiphop and broke it down to him by explaining how big a part their lyricism plays compared to other genres of music. It took a while for my dad to understand but trust me if you just sit him down and explain and walk him through the logic of real hiphop then he'll be glad to vibe along. People just need their minds opened, can't expect them to already know before you've explained it. This requires that you have a lot of knowledge on whatever songs/albums you're showing him though, since you'll need to explain all the metaphores and hidden meanings in the lyrics.

Nas "I Am" album was supposed to be a Double CD but was bootlegged before it was released which is why Nastradmus was released that same year. People tend to run with the narrative that Nastradmus was a bad album but in all reality that album is very rich in life jewels & great lyricism over dark beats. His verse on "Last Words" where he speaks thru the perspective of a Prison Cell is Incredible!! Creatively Genius!! Your dad would be blown away by that song. Good work guys!! 💪🏾✌🏾

We have a family business together and for the longest time we really wanted nothing to do with each other until he had a heart attack. After that things changed and we both woke up to how life can be so short and to appreciate the little things in life. Yes those are great songs that pay respect to Nas. Also underrated artist like Joey Badass are heavy influenced by Nas. Check out his album 1999 released in 2012 . Joey was 17 when he made that album. Songs like Waves, Hard Knock , From da Tomb$ are great songs that show how underrated he is. It is 90’s Boombap rap in the 2010’s. On Joey latest project 2000 Nas is in the album paying respect to Joey.

Wow! what a great reaction video and great song to feature. You really hit the nail on the head when you talked about people hearing all of the samples from previous great NAS songs and getting hyped. Also keep in mind that this song/album came out in 99, after Tupac and BIG's deaths. The rap world was still kind of reeling from those and and the debate was heavy about who was the best, still doing it. Jay-Z was killing it at that time. Some people pointed to NAS, but as you mentioned, he had some albums/ songs that just sort of fell flat... and then this released. My recollection was that there wasn't a lot of hype or even news about its release ahead of time. I remember hearing it on Hot 97 (NYC hip hop station) and they said it was going to be released the next day. I snuck out to a record store in between college classes that day to grab it.

Dad is always so on point 💯 I’ve never heard someone describe Nas as “draining” and that’s exactly what his style of rap is 👏🏽 even us who appreciate Nas rather listen to other rappers who are more “casual”. Me personally I love 2Pac who is a poet and inspired Nas but Pac doesn’t make you feel “drained” he combines the important message and poetry with energy and emotion also the California beats so it’s upbeat even sad songs. Great reaction as per usual, this is a classic Nas song. I like the album I Am but it’s a inconsistent album. In 98 Nas was working on a double album that would’ve been called ‘I Am Nastradamus’, the album would’ve been before he was alive to life after death, a really cool concept album. But unfortunately some of the songs got leaked so he scrapped the idea and released two albums in 1999, ‘I Am’ & ‘Nastradamus’, some of the original songs are on those albums. Despite commercial success both the albums got criticised by fans. Nipsey Hussle worked on doing a documentary about the original double album but unfortunately he got killed before completing it Really happy to hear you’re going to the Nas & Wu-Tang show, I was at their show in Stockholm in June, it was the best show I’ve ever been to. Just a heads up, Nas is not only performing his early records he’s also performing his newer records he’s done with Hit-Boy, so if you haven’t heard the albums he’s done with Hit-Boy I would advise you to do so, they’re dope! Nas also performs two songs with Raekwon, ‘Eye for a eye’ which was a Mobb Deep record Nas & Raekwon was on and ‘Verbal Intercourse’ which was on Raekwon first album, Ghostface Killah was also on the song and he also performs with them

Ahh man I love this page and the dynamic between father and son. Especially the fact they grew up in a totally different lifestyle than hip hop. I'm in my 40s and grew up and lived some of what Nas and many others in what we call the golden era of hip hop rapped about. Dad has a great open mind. He's able to decipher the language and double entendres within the lyrics. He understands the social economical imbalance and the struggles of 'the hood' thats expressed. Keep doing a great job. Number 1. Saying I Am wasn’t a great album is revisionist. There’s a lot of history with I Am. It also got 4.5 mics in The Source on release and if u were around back then u would know it was all over the streets when it dropped. And not reviewing any song off Nastradamus is also pretty hypebeast because while Nastradamus wasnt great it wasn’t terrible had some GEMS on it like Life We Chose, Project Windows, Last Words etc etc. People really gotta stop taking their opinions from the internet and listen for themselves. That era Nas featured some of his most introspective rapping. NY State Of Mind part 2 on I Am rivals the original as well.

It has everything that embodies great hip-hop to me - from the beat to the ad libs to the way Premiere constructed the hook, and obviously the lyrics and flow. “I Am” is a great album actually and Nostradamus is just an okay album but it has 7 to 8 songs that would go toe to toe with any great hip hop songs. So these albums are not bad as the media makes them to be, one sold almost 3M and the other went platinum, not to compare sales with greatness

The reason Nas has his face on every cover with his Projects Buildings faded in the back is because he's telling a story with his album covers also. He went from a Boy (Illmatic) to a Man (It Was Written) to a King (I Am) to a Prophet (Nastradamus) those his first half of his albums. I'll break down the rest of his Albums Covers later, maybe in another video or once ya'll get to Stillmatic, because there's a story with that cover and GOD SON'S cover too.

Never heard anyone breakdown the Stillmatic cover. I've always thought it was a tribute to Slick Rick's The Great Adventures, and the Pigeon being symbolic of New York.

@@bolder2009 I guess I’ll do both the Covers now. Stillmatic Cover has two meanings Your right for the first meaning. The second meaning is Noah’s Ark. The top of the Project Roof Nas is squatting on represent the Ark and he’s Noah over looking the flood in the background of his city… NYC. The Pigeon represents the pair of Animals that was on the Ark, but he only has one Pigeon and he chose the Pigeon over the Doves because like you said, it’s symbolic to NY. The clouds represent the rain for 40 Days 40 Nights. Now fast forward to the next album which is GOD’s SON, on the cover Nas appears to be naked and in the background it’s the water from the flood, which all that represents a new beginning and he washed away his sins. Being Born again, now if you have GOD’s SON Vinyl or CD, if you turn it around to the back cover you will now see the two Doves in each one of his hands along with his religious hat on.

I remember hearing this track when it first dropped and thinking "oh snap, illmatic Nas is back!" In the years before this he was criticized a little bit for being more commercialized. The song is amazing. This was definitely one for his illmatic fans and an answer to the criticism letting everyone know he's still on top.

Undying Love off this album is great and is another one of Nas' fans favorite records. The Lost Tapes, were records off I AM and Nastradamus that were leaked (there was massive leaked albums from Sony at the time and Nastradamus was basically a classic before the great songs were taken off for some reason) and those great songs were replaced with not so great songs and that's when Nas was going through the stuff with Carmen and whatnot and could not focus clearly on his music.

You did not say you'd never ever do a Nastradamus track...there were at least 4 bangers on that album, because even Nas's so-called wackest album is leap years beyond other people's best albums...you need to go back and give these tracks a second listen because they thump like a mf: "Last Words", "Project Windows", "Come Get Me" & "Quiet N***as"...seriously, trust me on that recommendation as someone who bought that album the day it dropped.
