Through all of the episodes of Dad's Army runs the theme of 'decency'. It is the glue holding everything together. It reflects why the men were in the Home Guard, and by extension, in the army. Having lived in different countries over my life I realise that this quality/outlook/set of unconscious and unspoken values taken for granted by many Brits is largely absent in many other cultures. At the moment, I'm in Mexico, where the principle of 'dog eat dog' applies - and getting one over on your neighbour seems to be a mark of victory and not immorality. While to be human is to have the potential to posses all of the values and behaviours that human beings are capable of, for some reason this particular quality of decency and 'fair play' is (or was) concentrated in the character of many Brits. Multiculturalism is rapidly diluting this outlook and we are all the worse off for it. This series - Dad's Army is a masterpiece of wonderful writing and character acting and while it is obviously a comedy show, it is built on truth.

Great episode, full of subtleties and shows a deep knowledge of human condition. I laughed so much! Thanks for uploading the whole series. A true gem.
@chriswatson79658 жыл бұрын
This show is so full of subtlety. I've always thought that the scene where Mainwearing was keen to pull the clock apart was in contrast, possibly even in contradiction, to the scene in another episode where they are trapped on the end of a pier and Mainwearing stops Wilson from breaking into a chocolate vending machine on the basis that they weren't Nazi thugs. But the consistency here is the class struggle and difference. The upper class had for a long time seen it's duty to bring things of beauty and culture to the public, such as a German made town clock, hence Wilson's feelings of discomfort at the clock being dismantled (without being aware of why he feels uncomfortable about it), whereas Mainwearing coming from the working class takes on the persona of the pragmatist. When it comes to the chocolate vending machine, these were dispensed by and for the working class. Wilson has no qualms about its destruction, whereas Mainwearing having been brought up on particular codes of morality felt that the only honourable way to get the chocolate was to play the vending machine game. Without a deep, implicit and unconscious understanding of the background culture of the characters the authors cannot invent such behaviour. It is this depth of the characters that makes this series so amazing. Such commentary on the culture of the period intermixed with farce. Also the anti-German sentiment expressed by Mainwearing re the clock is the only time in the entire series he does in this manner with an inanimate object (as if the object itself is manifestly evil), and yet the sentiment is entirely expected, anticipated and recognised by the audience, at the same time as being profoundly silly and yet so familiar.
