I think he’s telling a story of what it’s like growing up in the hood. Becoming a gangster. People tell them they’re supposed to do better, but they don’t know what better looks like. They have no model for it. Everything is total chaos where he’s from. Your dad probably felt spent afterward, because that’s the feeling he’s conveying here. Like no hope of getting out.

It’s not just the hood. I grew up on poor neighborhoods in 60s-70s and my mom pointed out how many kids never went beyond 5-10 blocks. There were kids my age who had never been to the mall. My mom was a teacher in the head start program in area and she tried to expose the kids to as much as possible because many of them came from poor immigrant families and parents were working to survive so it was the streets raising the kids. The worse part is these programs failed because you can’t just throw money at the problems. My mom would make home visits and actually took interest in the kids. She would do the lunch like “family style” where the kids were passing the dishes and using manners of please and thank you. It was always chaotic at the beginning of the year but her kids usually went the furthest in school and would come back and visit her. What’s sad is she was criticized by many peers for actually giving a damn and wouldn’t lower her expectations or standards for them just as she wouldn’t for her own kids. As she said being poor wasn’t an excuse for poor manners, having a work ethic, nor applying yourself and doing your best. Being poor isn’t a crime nor anything to be ashamed about. It’s not expecting individuals to contribute to society or to behave with respect for themselves and others. I grew up knowing that being poor didn’t define you nor your character and still know many families who struggle financially but have far more good character than many rich people I’ve worked for. But the cycle continues with crime and dependency simply because we try and treat the issues with money (that is actually stolen and not used properly - and instead goes to pork programs making greedy politicians wealthier) and continuing with the lie that poverty is the cause.
@compulsivefox8 ай бұрын
@@carolynpeca2818 The way you described this is perfect and really hits where I feel it the most. I've grown up in the hood my whole life with a single mom, my sister, and me. We always just barely get by, but sometimes my mom goes hungry to make sure us kids eat. It's very, very comforting and encouraging to see problems such as these be spoken about truthfully and respectfully.

This is the stuff I love to see on KZbin. Generations coming together, being open to pop culture that they didn't know, or didn't understand, or didn't pay attention to before. Broadening the musical horizon for everyone involved. Respect to Dad, for being open to something once dismissed. Hip-hop sampling has passed the funk and soul of generations past, down to new generations...and those younger generations can go back to discover and enjoy the inspirations...and sometimes, the owner of the original recording earns more money off a sample than they made from the original song. The beauty of sampling, really, is that it's a lot like the two of you sharing Pastime Paradise and Gangsta's Paradise with one another. It breaks down generational boundaries with the timelessness of great music.

First of all : Steve nor Coolio knew this song was going to blow up into the biggest song of that year let alone the entire decade so that should explain the 95% Royalties right there & the fact that Coolio was cool with it because they got the rights for the song way before the song was even completed!!!!! Second of all : The amount of redemption that is in this song is out this world : "I'm the kinda G the lil homies wanna be like , On my knees in the night saying prayers in the street light"!!!! 👿🔥🔥🔥🔥 You have to do alot of really horrible things in order to cry over listening to this song or be a victim 💯 ppl don't realize how truly deep it really is cuz of how famous it is & the parodies made over the years & it's sad!!!! It's probably the most famous & by far the most iconic hip hop song in the entire history of rap music & in the Top 10 or maybe even Top 5 of every single genre of music ever made💯 especially considering how old it is & it's still just as big today & it was back when it first came out in 95' & it's the very first rap song to be Number # around the entire globe!!!! 30+ countries to be exact!!!!!! This song is the true definition of "lightning in a bottle" considering you can't hate or dislike that beat or that insane hook or the insane vocals or even the str8 forward lyrics & it's still the only 90's gangsta/conscious/rap Grammy award winning song with a billion views 💯 Actually two billion if u count the original upload on KZbin!!!!!!! & He doesn't curse or say the N word through out the entire song!!!! Name another gangsta rap song that can do that & go this hard????......I'll wait 💯 BTW I luv how your dad is still a OG enough to catch that bass line kick in which had such a huge impact on this genre of music but u didn't say nothing about it lolz & then , at the end of the song , he put his arms back behind his head like laying back on his bed & said : "it was great" & then smiled , like he just had the best "ear sex" of his entire life💯

definitely one of the hardest rap songs out there, just lyrically so heavy, gets over looked in that sense i feel

It’d be super cool to see him react to Through the Wire by Kanye

this song was a MASSIVE hit back then. i think a lot of it was because it was tied to a movie soundtrack. a lot of rap music at the time grew in pop culture b/c of movie soundtracks

Michelle Pfeiffer was asked to be in the video because that was on the soundtrack of the movie that she starred in and you see clips of the movie throughout the video.

If all us "fellas" had as much patience with our Fathers, as you do yours, the World would be a better place! Good job kid! (And Dad)

I mean no disrespect with this comment but I seen Dad said he felt drained from this song and wondered if the viewers felt the same. A lot of us don’t feel drained from this because the song and every lyric is reality for us we feel his pain through and through, he spoke the honest truth about the “Gangster’s Paradise” which a lot of us were born into. I love the videos BTW keep dropping them this stuff is great for the culture ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻

Coolio was a very "positive energy" rapper up until this point in his career, this was his first darker song which is one of the reasons it was so powerful, and since you guys were on the topic of rock and samples, Sing For The Moment by Eminem is a song your dad must listen to

I was in 2nd grade when this song came out and me and another kid were rapping it and the teacher was like "what are you guys singing?" The teacher made us rap the whole song in front of the class 😂 and the class cheered us at the end lol

As a 39-year-old woman, I feel like you can't be old to have been playing this CD in your car when you started driving. If so you look super young...lol. This was the first CD I ever purchased....RIP Coolio
