Important problem clarified: You must always write the amount in the box and the spelled out amount below as close to the left side as possible. Why? because someone could squeeze in an added number. $ 640.00 could become $5640.00 because there is a space on the left and six-hundred-forty and 00/00 could become five-thousand six-hundred-forty and 00/00 . And make sure a line is drawn from the very end of the spelled out entry all the way to the end of the space. Also, the date could be confused, so we learned in financial safety class in the US Navy to spell out the date as day-month-year with the month spelled out. Example: 23 February 2022 . Yes, we have seen confusion and deception with these.
@I_am_Allan2 жыл бұрын
In Canada the date is [Y][Y][Y][Y] [M][M] [D][D] and they actually have the boxes labelled like that so you know exactly what to put where.
@3lttlbrds2 жыл бұрын
Good point! Regarding the date most cheques have the space below the boxes for the date DDMMYYYY printed so at least that one won't be confused

When I worked for the Dept of Defense it was always day, month spelled out, year. It kind of stuck with me and that’s how I’ve always done it since. It definitely eliminates any confusion.

My dad died in 2019 (I was 14) and the skills I’ve learned since his passing are more than I think most other boys my age now will ever learn in their lives. I’m the only child and my father never knew me as having any manual skills. In two years I’ve learned how to disassemble a small motor, install and repair a backyard zipline, start, operate, and maintain a ride on mower, and many other skills. In that time I actually thought when I grow older I could start a KZbin account exactly like this one, and I’ve got to say, I’m glad it already exists.

One additional tip: The amount in numbers in the box on the top line needs to exactly match the written amount on the 2nd line - if they do not match, the bank will use the amount from the 2nd line, NOT what you wrote in the box in numbers. I got burned by this once when I was young (not bad, but just an eye-opener), and I'll never forget it. Thanks "Dad"!

Great video! As someone who works in a bank I'll add 2 things. 1. Legally there is no such thing as a future dated check (which is a common myth) and you are liable for that payment being in your account the moment you sign the check. 2. The bank has to go by the amount that is written out on the legal line, not the dollar amount in the box.
@mikevantrigt43172 жыл бұрын
Depends on the country. In Canada the bank has to honour the date on post-dated cheques.

A note on the "memo line" from a small business owner... If you own a small business or have a gig job, most of the things you're gonna pay for fit into categories on your accounting or tax software, like Quickbooks or turbotax (if you're itemizing, etc). So when I have to fill out a check I add that category. For example, let's say I need to by a something that I'm buying JUST for work... Well, that's a work expense, so a percentage of it is deductible on my taxes at the end of the year DEPENDING on what category it's in... (which is really complicated, but if you note this in the memo line it'll make filing your taxes easier, and if you get an accountant or tax preparer, they'll appreciate it) So if my work drill breaks and I write a check for a new one, I'd fill out the memo line as "Drill, shop equipment" If I need to buy a new tank for my blowtorch I'd write "propane, consumable" That way when you sit down with your quickbooks or whatnot, you always know what category that expense gets filed under. I know that checks are slower and kinda a pain compared to paying electronically, but from any sort of accounting standpoint it actually makes things a lot easier later on.
