1. Make sure you have their attention first. 2. Make a verbal contract. - ask your child to repeat what you just asked. - mostly works for older children. 3. Create a list. - to do list. 4. Would you rather eat before or after you clean your room? - this makes them feel like they have a choice. - if they choose non of the choices, you them say I'm sorry that is not one of the choices. 5. Ask questions..- Give them the ability to learn by asking questions. - example, hey what was that conversation we had about brushing your teeth before having dinner. - this forces them to think and learn. 6. Positive reinforcement. - thank you so much for helping me with the groceries.

Thanks for providing such great suggestions! I’m a dad of three, age 11, 8 and 6. Throughout the years I’ve been trying and learning to be a great dad but sometimes i just got mad and yelled at the kids. Each time I felt upset afterwards. Yelling is not a good way to get children to listen, it just hurts. Every dad should come learn these techniques.

This is important . My parent's didn't do any of this, straight yelling and dictating. I think it's still affecting me to this day at 24 yrs old
