Shortly after this clip was taken, the second works DAF Turbotwin truck, driven by Theo van de Rijt, with Kees van Loevezijn and Chris Ross as engineer/copilot, somersaulted at 180 kph after hitting a dune. Van Loevezijn was ejected off the truck and died at the scene, while Ross and van de Rijt were badly injured. It is after this tragedy that DAF pulled out of rally raid, scrapped its works team and sold its assets to the de Rooy family for Jan and Gerard de Rooy to enter again as privateers at their own wish. Jan had won the Dakar once and Gerard would later do so twice.

@jamesshunt51234 жыл бұрын
@@tigervv6437 True, but a huge truck has far worse aerodynamics and the faster you go the worse it's going to get. The weight also is factor since it's going to sink down in the loose sand a lot more and thus obviously have much more mechanical friction. According to DAF's own webpage their 1988 Dakar truck weighed 10500 kilos - that's 10,5 tons! The Peugeot 405 T16 Dakar was merely 900 kilos dry (heavier fully loaded) which isn't even a ton. That means the truck was roughly 10 times as heavy! Even with 1200hp you think that is not going to be enough against a far more nimble and aerodynamically sleek rally car. This is why this footage here is just insane and unbelievable. If it didn't happen before our eyes as proven here nobody would believe it.
