You understand his motive and you kinda know that Pandora is infested with dangerous creatures and bandits but yet because of your characters position your against him. Personally, I would have put N from Pokemon Black & White on the sympathetic villains list. He's not like other criminal bosses in the Pokemon franchise; he's not trying to obtain ultimate power or issue a culling. His goals are completely altruistic. He was raised to believe that Pokemon are being harmed by humans, so he wants to help them by separating them from humans. But as the game goes on, you see him start to open his eyes. Immediately he's introduced to people whose Pokemon are genuinely happy to be with their trainers, and at the climax of the game, he realizes that humans and Pokemon bring out the best in each other. His entire enterprise may have been a lie constructed by his adopted father Ghetsis to ensure he has no resistance in his conquest, but N's passion and convictions were real. Upon discovering the truth, he reworked his goal to save Pokemon the right way. Not with overwhelming force, but with true compassion.

@@BJGvideos N absolutely qualifies. He's the primary antagonist of Black/White and he is acknowledged as the leader of Team Plasma, even though it was Ghetsis pulling the strings. I put him in the same camp as Count Bleck, because even though they have a change of heart in the end and the final boss becomes somebody who was manipulating them from the start, they're the one the game builds to be the final confrontation for. This is about characters in a gray area after all.

I agree with you on the Warriors of Hope, god those kids were pushed to insanity by figures that was supposed to take care of them. And that's not unrealistic either, how many times have you heard a story of a trashy parent doing terrible things to their kid ? This is what happens when child abuse happens. Also for my own entry *Persona 4 *spoilers* (but not really I don't say who it is and I'm being vague) : To quote someone I can't remember, the killer is you when you're alone at home drinking and brooding in your own misery. If only they gave themself the little push to connect with people, maybe this person would be okay. And the game/anime/whatever P4 related presses to death the simple idea of : The protagonist and antagonist starting on the same page, the only difference is one tried to appreciate life and find value and happiness in it, the other gave up and stewed in their misery alone unchecked. YOU can become this killer, there is potential for anyone to turn out like them. And THAT is scary.

Kotoko in particular I feel pretty sorry for. Sure, the torture she forced Komaru to go through was pretty f***ed up, but even then, the concept her groping machine was to force adults to feel the same pain the her own father subjected her to. The moment before her boss battle is especially heartbreaking, when she cries out: “If you say ‘gentle’ ...THEN KILL ME INSTEAD!”

Porky should've been on the sympathetic villains list. He makes a dumb decision by joining the Happy Happy Cultists and kidnaps Paula. He then wants Ness to forgive him, but due to his muteness, he says nothing. AND THEN Giygas takes control of him, and they both get defeated by Ness and his friends. He then goes through time and sets up an ENTIRE EMPIRE just because of his jealousy. And in the end, he just ends up stuck in a capsule for all of eternity. All because he just wanted to be friends with Ness.

Nah, he had no reason to shoot Joker. Adachi is more sympathetic imo because most people can agree with his ideology. Life sucks and turning a blind eye to everything around you that does not involve you just makes life a lot easier for everyone. While his actions, which show how far he believes in this, are pretty extreme, he did not expect anyone to realise that it was him, along with his methods being unbelievable, so it makes sense. I will agree that Akechi is also sympathetic but the whole idea of "I had no-one to rely on, no-one who believed in me, no-one who wanted me" is kinda boring to me. Still a great villain though, just more for his character than his backstory.

I think either Jun Kurosu or Maki Sonomura would be better then Akechi, simply because even if Akechi did feel remorseful about shooting Joker in the end, he was very willing to just go and kill people to further his own goals.

Anti-heroes and villain protagonists have different roles. Anti-heroes are protagonists with a lack of heroic qualities and morals while villain protagonists are focused as villains in a different perspective with the hero being the antagonist. Anti-heroes can have redeeming qualities with a better ending while villain protagonists can get a possible ending whether they have a downer ending, redemption, win the battle at the end in a worst way, or becoming a hero.

Dr. Loboto was one of the scariest villains in any video game I've ever played. I remember when I was playing Psychonauts as a kid and going up to his lab in the asylum, I was terrified of doing anything for fear of getting caught by him and seeing Raz's brains getting pulled out. He was the biggest reason why I never beat that game and why I wanna play it so badly now that I'm grown up

(Hollow knight spoilers below!) Hollow knight is great at having complex characters. When you first start the game, your goal seems clear: defeat the 3 dreamers, and then fight whatever monstrosity is trapped inside. But when you finally make it there, you realize that the hollow knight wasn’t the villain, it’s one of your kind, created solely just to locked up for eternity and contain the radiance. The pale king isn’t necessarily a villain in any since, he doesn’t even have a live appearance in game, but he’s definitely not a good guy either. He created thousands of vessels and murdered nearly all of them because they weren’t “pure.” When they finally did get a pure vessel, it turned out to not be pure anyway. Also his palace seems to be very villain-esque, it’s literally just a maze of sawblades and thorns. The radiance is the most obvious villain, but even then it’s still not totally unjustifiable. As soon as the pale king came along, the moth tribe stopped worshipping the radiance and tried to basically wipe it from existence by totally forgetting about it. But this made it really angry and when people remembered it it literally just unleashed a plague on the world. The best part? With the exception of dreamnail dialogue and the birthplace cutscene, none of these characters even have any lines ingame. You learn all of this lore from the world and characters around you.

My list for sympathetic villains would be something like this: 5. King Dedede (Kirby’s Adventure) - The only reason King Dedede stoke the Star Rod was to save the world from being taken over by Nightmare. 4. DJ Octavio (Splatoon) - The only reason that DJ Octavio wanted the Great Zapfish was to save the Octarians due to their electrical source becoming scarce. 3. Freddy, Foxy, Chica, Bonnie, and The Puppet (Five Nights At Freddy’s) - Crucify me for this if you want. The main Animatronics are possessed by the children who William Afton/Purple Guy murdered. Pretty messed up for a Chuck E. Cheese spook simulator. 2. GladOS (Portal) - Deep Inside, GladOS is a human being trapped inside of a mechanical AI after being uploaded to cheat death. 1. Flowey (Undertale) - I’m not writing a big explanation on this one, sorry.

On the sympathetic villain side, lies an island in the middle of the world. On it lies a young, but complex individual: A mustached young girl who's intentions mean well, but goes about things in the wrong way and is ultimately, overthrown by a kid with a hat and her friends, yet she still has a chance to redeem her sins... On the other side, of the heroes who chose to be villainous, in the town of Sharpwood in another world: An aged cop who fell from grace and became nothing more than a killer and a crime lord, masquerading as a sheriff...by the end of his story, he has become no better than the criminals he caught. Both have one thing in common: Their way of dealing justice. For Mustache girl, she has the wrong way of doing things, but has the right ideas. For Jack Boyd, he merely uses justice as an excuse just to kill, steal, and just be a selfish kingpin...but it's all a result of cracking due to the stress of the mafia who pushed him around. Both tried to do right...but they still failed in either execution or in ideas.

My favorite part of Super Paper Mario is the villains. Hands down. They're all so colorful, fun and sympathetic. I wish we could have seen more from them from future games, or (although this is a fantasy) a sitcom of them all just hanging out and planning to destroy the world. But alas, they remain underrated gems (just like their game). Overall, O'Chunks, Mimi, Dimentio, Nastasia and ESPECIALLY Count Blek all get an 11/10. I would die for all of them.

Its kind of unsettling how one of the very few examples of a video game hero taking advantage of a villain monologuing their plan, is with a character that is even more villainous and psychotic with Jack Boyd.

A sympathetic villain I greatly enjoy is Cyrus from Pokémon. As the boss of Team Galactic, he's an intimidating man who's said to have no emotions, and his aim is to recreate the universe and become a God. But then you find out *why*. See, later on, you meet some people who knew him as a kid. One person says he was an excellent student but preferred machines to people. Another is his grandfather, on a remote island, who says that Cyrus had been worn down by trying to live up to what his parents wanted, and he became distant and sullen from it. Grandpa also has long wondered if he should have taken the boy in and raised him himself. So you have a scenario where a kid is undergoing relentless pressure to be perfect, is clearly falling apart because of it, and nobody is helping him or trying to intervene. Someone in a situation like that would come to associate emotion with pain, just like how Cyrus sees the world. His affinity for machines is like his view of the structure of the world as well. Machines do what they're programmed to do without strife, and if they break down they can be rebuilt. You also don't find any of this out until after you defeat him, after which he disappears from the plot. Oh yeah and something crucial to his defeat is how his emotions break out at last and he lashes out in anger and hatred. In both of his endings he takes off and isn't seen again, but goddamn did I want to follow him. I felt a NEED to defeat him, but I wanted so badly to follow and talk to him. To ask him why he believed what he did and wanted to take it to such extremes. And then I got the backstory details and wanted to find him even more. Also, him being a child wasn't all that long ago. During the events of the game, he's in his mid 20s. I rag on USUM for wrecking the Aether plot and ruining Lusamine's complex character, but it also gave us a Cyrus that shows interest in what he could have been if he had found happiness as a child. If he had been able to have a friend like Rotom (a lot of people, especially Japanese fans,have long thought that he was the kid who discovered Rotom but frankly I would say this proves he WASN'T. Though the other person it could have been is Charon, and having Rotom as a childhood friend sure didn't prevent him from being a terrible person.)

Cool video but I say a villain that deserves Sympathy is the Koopa Clan because Bowser not knowing his parents he was raised by Kamek trying to keep him safe from the Mario Bros in the past and he did make him happy by getting him whatever he needed and even tried to get him a Yoshi now fastfaword into the future Bowser saw Goombas and Koopas struggling seeing them in pain and suffering Bowser took them all in and loved them gave them a home food water everything they need then he has 7 Koopalings Ludwig Lemmy Roy Iggy Wendy Morton Larry and Boom Boom and he wants the kingdoms for each of his kids and then in the future Bowser Jr came along but during his whole adventure he wanted Princess Peach because he 💝 her and want her as his wife he never at all harmed her in the games treated her like his queen all he wanted was a family he never really had he didn't have a mommy and daddy but he has a daddy Kamek because he took care of him but he wanted a family and eventually Pom Pom came and he took care of her too because the Koopa Clan are a family tough loving caring but they all have 💝's. And they all have tough life time but there strong and never give up and they need the sympathy and that why I love the Koopas because they make the Mario games amazing awesome 💝

Plushmation Studio They deserve some sympathy, sure, but pretty much everything you just stated is fan interpretation in Bowser’s favor. He’s not a good guy and he knows it, he even brags about how bad he is in the RPGs. And Peach not loving him is unfortunate, but he can’t do anything about it either, so kidnapping her over and over out of a mad crush does put him in the wrong. Also, Boom Boom and Pun Pun aren‘t Koopalings, but Bowser Jr. does consider himself part of the group as of Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr‘s Journey. I really recommend that game if you like these guys so much.

I love the Mario games and I know that Boom Boom and Pom Pom aren't koopalings ^^ and it is sad that Bowser doesn't have someone who loves him like that but as well when you been raised to be a villain its just natural but also in Mario parties that bowser minions and even Jr are invited but not Bowser which I forgot to mention but it not nice that Mario doesn't invite him though so in a way there's good in him for he'll team up with the hero's when it comes down to it he just want to be the best that he can ^^

His backstory is just depressing and makes his bizarre plan make sense, that someone who grew up thinking that emotions only caused pain and being pressured into being "perfect" would come to see emotions as the cause of all suffering and want to rid all of creation of its pain and become a perfect being. ...the irony is that he never did get rid of his emotions and would have been the only imperfect being even as a God. Even if he managed to create a world where no one else had emotions, it could never be truly flawless because of himself.

@@Nosretep True. Though its complicated with her, considering Nihlego's toxin just sort of eroded her inhibitions rather than controlled her like I've seen some suggest. I suppose we all have those dark sides though. But yeah here's someone whose husband was ripped away from her so she began doing anything she could to find him, then tried to preserve everything just as it was when he left, including pokemon and their children. She's at once both a hateable villain and a truly tragic one.

This is a niche pick, but i find Crow from The Legend of Heros: Trails of Cold Steel to be one of the best villains in a game i have seen for a long time! He is not malicious, he does what he thinks is right and justified, and he cares about those around him. All that makes him a villain is how he is on the other side of a war, but he still treats everyone with the respect they deserve, and even spares them or helps them out if he doesn't feel like they are a threat to him or his goals, even letting the heros go on multiple occasions, and even giving Rean tips on how to get stronger as an Awakener! Hell, he even initially leads the heros in the right direction on where to find Rean at the start of the second game...
