I seriously don’t understand how this album isn’t better praised. It didn’t sound, “punk” and I’m sure that’s it. But musically and lyrically this album is solid. It’s something that I can listen to back to back without fatigue.

I totally agree! I bought it in 88 and was hoping for more Minor Threat sound and it caught me super off guard. This was independent "Indy" rock before that was a thing, yet it was. This album is a top favorite if not my favorite record of all time.The memories of my youth yet I still love the songs and the dramatic different feeling to each song.

I welcomed all the changes in 7 Seconds, Dag Nasty and even Uniform Choice. I also caught the mid 80's Dischord stuff but sadly only heard excellent period Government Issue albums (i.e. "You") during the pandemic.

This is one of the most criminally overlooked albums, ever. Emo before Emo existed, and 'You're Mine' is proto-Grunge. It seems to have been poorly regarded by a lot of fans (it's about as far away from Can I Say as you can get) but it was ridiculously far ahead of its time.

Of all the weird things, this sold what 30,000 copies, yet i knew 6 people in my rinky dink town of Waynesboro Pa that all owned a cassette copy, i guess we were heavily over sampled in that count, lol for what's it worth I hope it brings someone joy to know that! Also we used to ride around in a mint red 62 T Bird with this blasting! It changed our small worlds lives, we went from mostly only hardcore and punk to broadening our tastes as to what we thought was "cool". This record was essential to what became grunge or alternative, for bad or good, life is messy like that.

In my tiny town of La Mirada, CA we also had about 10-12 people blasting this on cassette. Either driving to & from the beach, or while we skated a backyard ramp.

I think it was maybe only 2 of us in Boyle Heights, CA who owned this LP) or even knew this album when it came out!! I still have my copy. I also still own my "All Ages Show" cassette. Interestingly, I just recently moved to La Mirada.

I interviewed Brian back when Minority of One was released and got a few nuggets about this album. - Florida Dan was a local mate of the band who was a total character: roadie, hellraiser, what have you. - The solo on Here's to You was intentionally out of key and dissonant. When he recorded it, they told him to go back and do it again, which he did - the exact same solo, note for note. The producer gave in. - La Peñita was a local restaurant / bar in Hermosa Beach. It opened in 1978 and was a hang-out place for the band. It closed down in 2021, so I guess we'll never know just how good the (sic) carne asata really was.

Truly bizarre production choices. Could’ve been way better
@blonkeddleharvey23084 жыл бұрын
@@robertlane1197 There is an alternate version of "Trouble Is" that was released as a 12 inch that has a different mix than the album. It sounds soooooo much better and I really wish they would have mixed the whole album that way. The band mixed this album themselves but I don't know what they were thinking. The guitars are not at the right volume whatsoever. There are several guitar parts that are buried in the mix and they can barely be heard. Truly a shame because the guitar tone on this album sounds sick, but in most parts the bass drowns it out. There are so many gems on this album that are difficult to listen to because the sound is so sterile. It's akin to Metallica's "...And Justice for All" album (released the same year) but with not enough guitar instead of not enough bass.

I just brought this topic up on the Uniform Choice Staring into the Sun video. You are so correct, the mix sucks and if there's a way to re-master and make it punchier that would be amazing. "There are several guitar parts that are buried in the mix and they can barely be heard." < THIS!!!!
@theinnerstation3 жыл бұрын
@@blonkeddleharvey2308 It’s so much better as you said. Also the Inner Ear version of All Ages Show hints at how epic this would’ve sounded under the supervision of Don Zientara. I’ll always love this record for personal reasons, but would LOVE to see this remastered. Others from Giant Records too like: Grave Goods, UC, Government Issue, etc. Verbal Assault’s Trial has already been given an upgrade and it’s amazing. Giant was onto something with this unique era of matured post-hardcore.
