Daggers win easily at light contact sparring because there is no gravitas to the attacks. A swordsman with an authoritative, powerful fast strike aiming to cut down the opponent would be very difficult to stop with daggers, but not impossible.

It was very exciting for a hobbit like me. I just started with the long sword but I'm thinking I should diversify and carry a dagger in a back scabbard too. I use the same strategy while bow hunting. I'm just too small to build up enough draw strength for a lethal shot at range. So I have to get in close and shoot him right in the juice box and then climb a tree just in case Mr. Elk has some life left in him and tries to run me through with his rack in a fit of justifiable rage.

As a 89 lb female, the longsword is dauntingly heavy even though I'm in top shape. I'm constantly at a size disadvantage because there are no other women in this area or hobbits who want to swing a sword. The issue is that it's highly unrepresentative of reality due to the lack of follow-through. In reality a dagger is simply not strong or heavy enough to stop a good swing from a 2h sword. It would be batted away and the guy rushing it would loose a hand, a head or both.
@okamidt3298
@okamidt3298 2 жыл бұрын
Batted away by what? If I rush in at you suddenly and you have a two handed sword you’re A. Not going to be fast enough to hit me before I get in and B. Not going to be able to hit me when I AM in. Once you get close enough there’s absolutely nothing a sword can do. I imagine daggers would be a pretty good dueling weapon if you use their strengths.

Karl Tanner from game of Thrones style! Good video, though the sword guy should have led with thrust point out full arm's length every time. There's a reason this style wasn't prevalent though, opponents of equal skill with a long sword vs daggers would see long sword winning 9 out of 10 times, if daggers did win, great chance of a life threatening cut during the close.

I train medieval fencing and have seen fights like these, longsword wins almost alwats unless the weilder of the daggers is VERY good. Many think longsword is hard to move but in fact it is very easy, you can be very fast swinging it and anyone rushining at you would be dead. Longswords are very dangerous, you need a buckler and a 1H sword to properly counter a longsword. Parrying with 2 daggers or 1H and dagger is very hard and confusing. Even in a battle between buckler+ 1H and 2 daggers, there is a chance the buckler+1H will win.
@chuckmikey001
@chuckmikey001 3 жыл бұрын
This is why dual wielders are so dangerous, when using a single weapon like a long sword once you make a committed attack its very difficult to disengage once the opponent blocks or parries with one weapon and then closes on you with the other, that halfswording is definitely the way to go in that situation, especially if you can hook the other guy with a quillion and turn him to the side and get on the outside of his weapon.
@kohlrak
@kohlrak 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is that people think you block like that. The long sword guy had so many wins if he just followed through instead of stopping: it's a cutting weapon, not a club. It's power doesn't stop because it's momentum has. And if we're to see them as full-plate armored, then the sword is the wrong weapon to be using. And why is the center of mass always the target?

@@cadethumann8605 It is possible, but it is difficult to pull off at full speed, on paper it is ideal but there's a lot of factors that could make it all go wrong, the main one is faint's/bluffs and footwork. The longer weapon fighter doesn't really have much to lose fighting at his measure, he can just chain attacks and force you to make a mistake in a safe distance. The fighter witht he small dagger is fighting under pressure with everything to lose, he has to close the gap and force his way through a danger zone. Count yourself lucky if you make it to a measure where you can even land a hit while remaining unharmed.

@@londiniumarmoury7037 One scenario I am wondering about is the defense scenario before one can get a safe distance to draw a sword. In the scenario I wonder about, a swordsman is walking around and the suddenly, a rogue swordsman attacks him up close. Swordsman A only has time to draw a parrying dagger to deflect until he gets to a safe distance to draw his sword. Another thing that has me wondering are the varying types of daggers (some have wider blades for shock absorbing, some have crossguards, and other things). The daggers I keep seeing being used in sparring lack guards and the blades are thin. Not to mention, people tend to only use the reverse grip instead of forward.
@londiniumarmoury7037
@londiniumarmoury7037 4 жыл бұрын
@@cadethumann8605 I figure you are writing another scene, hope it's going well. I think if you armed the guy with a parrying dagger it would be more realistic, parrying daggers are designed to trap and block sword attacks. They are the ones with the long curved crossguards shaped like Sai. He could draw a parrying dagger and trap the sword in his crossguard by twisting his wrist after the stike lands, trapping the sword in his dagger guard, then leap back and draw his own sword after the attacker pulls back and releases his blade. The daggers you are probably seeing in HEMA sparring without crossguards are Rondel daggers, with small round discs above the hilt. Those are normally not wide because they lack cutting capacity and are mainly used for stabbing thrusts through armour gaps. In the Italian sources like Fiore, you see a lot of plays and guards where facing an opponent with a longer weapon (Sword or spear) they hold them in reverse grip instead of forward grip. Because they are not really attempting to fence Vs a longer weapon with those daggers, they are trying to initiate grappling, and only use a single deflection or warding defense before trying to take them down with grappling to the ground.

Or follow through: he freezes when "blocked." It's a sharp weapon being simulated, not a hammer: it's power comes from moving at all, not from smacking. Blocking the sword should not be perceived as ending it's attack, but rather having kept it off you temporarily. The sword had kills ever damn time, but just didn't follow through. And, hell, one of the first things you learn in knife fighting arts is that you focus on the closest target, which is seldom the body.
@alexsawa2956
@alexsawa2956 2 жыл бұрын
These are sportsmen competing, not determined warriors fighting. Any martial art where merely touching an opponent scores a point is just sport. Yes, something worthwhile can be learned...but there's something very real lacking in the practice. There's a skittishness in attacks (due to fear of opponent scoring a point) that can be detrimental overall... Long weapons are often in danger of being parried. If the swordsman gets attacked by surprise with a dagger, perhaps that's realistic... But when facing off from a distance like this, and the opponent with the daggers charges at the swordsman, the swordsman should have sword pulled back with tip pointing towards opponent...even flat of the blade can be supported by other hand to assist an unwavering hold. (Similar to shooting pool, but obviously you don't slide your blade against your bare hand!) When opponent lunges or charges, swordsman should then use reach advantage to stab the attacker when attacker is closing in and in range. (Attacker has much less chance to block or parry). If skewered opponent is still charging and attacking, result may be mutual killings... I would hope that as the swordsman, I'd have the presence of mind to let go of my sword after the penetration and attempt to protect my vital spots with arms and scrunching. (Better to get cut up rather than mortally wounded) (Aren't armchair bouts the best? I just won the fight with no risk or experience! 😜)

Using a GoPro in this way adds an interesting point of view and is more acceptable to the HEMA practitioner than taping the GoPro to the outside of his or her helmet. Have you seen the GoPro footage used in these videos, kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKScdZ6EpdGEeKM and kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZS8ZmqAnK-FZq8

these scenarios do not make sense. long sword against daggers. A longsword in a small room to test but ok. In the whole test it shows that both would lose sometimes dagger can block the long sword & counter attack sometimes not. Both are wounded both die well If the longsword hits the attacker with a cross strike on the neck / shoulder / arm area, then you do not run further and make some counter attacks as if nothing had happened. The longsword reach danger & by hit high damage The 2 daggers short reach distance problem, protect problem & high damage only by many rapid hits You can also see the longsword lead carefully attacking / defending where the dagger attacker is very energetic and aggresive. This example shows that it is very dangerous with 2 daggers to attack someone with a longsword.

There are so many possible scenarios we could throw at this match between “Daggers Vs Longsword”, the main things to take away from it are. 1, if you have a longsword use its length and reach advantage. 2, if you have daggers, slip, parry and move in as quickly as you can. As for actions on the battlefield taken in the heat of the moment high on adrenalin, injured or not who can tell.

No offense meant to the swordsmen but this seems more like a case of experienced vs inexperienced or at the least aggressive vs passive. Both the longsword users freeze up after one attack and don't try very hard to make use of spacing. They let dagger man back them into a wall too easily. Personally I would move in to take the center of the arena first and attack, which would give me some room to retreat after the attack lands. Black jacket started to do that more toward the end. I also think the ref should call hold sooner. Dagger man gets to ignore the hit from the sword and do several attacks before they call it. An afterblow in in one tempo would be more fair. Just my two cents.

Probably, how do you explain dressing up in restrictive clothing that makes it difficult to breath and blocks your vision and hearing. Then with sweat pouring into your eyes you walk up to another person wearing the same clothing and start hitting each other with long metal pointy things. :)

Honestly a dagger is a weapon best used in a grapple or suprise attack. For open confrontation you have to have a lot more skill than your opponent.

The problem with this is, the dagger man ALWAYS gets stabbed/slashed as he moves in to stab. So, in real life, would this happen? Would the dagger man WILLINGLY end his own life to stab the swordsman? I am not sure...

Sword guy sucks. Just point the sword out & stab when he comes close, you don't even have to move. Stupid.

In the last "win" of the daggers, he got his arm cut, and LOST. And, this was clearly an unfair match between two very amateur people, with the sword wielder so amateur he didn't typically try at all.
