The reason for 'z' being forward is because it was designed around an azerty keyboard, as opposed to the qwerty keyboard that's generally standard in English speaking countries. The keyboard is laid out how it is because it puts letters that are more commonly used within ease of reach, but what letters you use most often will vary by country. France uses azerty, Germany (and some others) uses qwertz and the rest of the countries that use the latin alphabet use qwerty.
