I have a lot of nostalgic affection for these little cars. A friend 's mum had a red CX in the early 90's when we were teenagers. He borrowed it a lot. We travelled all over and got a lot of freedom one summer in particular. I also once got a lift in a Gtti along the motorway. The driver was thrashing it, and i couldn't take my eyes off the "turbo boost" gauge - it felt very fast, but very flimsy.

My Uncle Harry had a red five door when I was a wee lad. I later wanted to own a Gtti but couldn't have got insurance so sadly never managed to get one . I recall a MAX Power magazine article many years ago on the Gtti and how cool they were..

In 1990 I really wanted a GTTI in red, but they were unbelievably hard to get hold of in the UK due to import restrictions on Japanese cars. I remember talking to a few Daihatsu dealers at the time and all of them only got half a dozen cars a year. Nobody had any cars in stock, red ones only seemed to exist in theory and test drives were impossible so I gave up and got a 205 XS instead

I never owned a Daihatsu Charade of this generation, but I did own a 1980 five speed manual five door (in what I described as "frog green"), and a 1983 five speed manual five door in white. The 1980 model was more rounded and had round headlights. The 1983 model was boxy with rectangular headlights. I recall from brochures back then that Daihatsu engineers had calculated that the optimal capacity per cylinder for performance and economy was 331 cc, hence the 993 cc capacity of the three cylinder engine. They obviously stuck by this throughout the different generations of the Charade. For an inexpensive car they drove very well.

I remember these cars, even the GTti but most Charades I saw, were the more basic 3-door Hatchbacks here, metallic light blue colour seemed to be very common on these. Later, I think in early 90's, Charade was available here also as a Sedan version.

This model Charade was in my opinion the nicest looking supermini of the late 1980s. Much more stylish than a Metro, Fiesta or Nova. It's that gentle curve on the C pillar on the 5 door model that does it for me. But the 3 door GTti is gorgeous as well. Only the Honda Civic runs it close on style. I never knew about the petrol turbo version either. Even the 1.0 diesel turbo would be interesting in a different way. I don't know of a smaller engined diesel car that was commercially available. Kia had a 1.1 litre diesel for a time. Later on there would be a 1.3 litre engine option on (I think) the CX. Likely needed to broaden appeal of the car in Europe. The base model CS was perhaps similar to the CX externally but minus the wheel trims.

The GTti was way ahead of its time but heck I think that the more staid looking turbo petrol was an ultra rare car!

I remember this Charade body shape very well back in the day. I always thought they looked pretty but the interiors looked cheap. Daihatsu were reliable cars though.

This particular Charade was sold only in Western US and only for a few years before they left the market.
