Adding wood chips to the box makes it more likely the chickadees will use it. Just make sure to use a box with no larger than a 1 1/8" opening with a metal reinforcement guard. the guard will prevent larger birds from enlarging the opening and gaining access to the nesting box.

We put up a wren/chickadee box last year and almost immediately we had a chickadee couple checking it out. We watched as they added material to the box and then there was lots of activity as the male and female interchanged and hatched the brood. It was so interesting to watch their interactions and this video was a blessing to actually see what was most likely going on inside the box. Thank you! Adding wood chips to the box is new to me and will do that next spring for sure. This year, the box was taken over by bumblebees, of all things!

Aww that's wonderful! Bumblebee takeover of chickadee nest boxes is common because bumblebees like the moss. They are native, and play their important role in the ecosystem. But it kind of stinks to lose a chickadee nest to them. Next year, you could consider doing a bumblebee house so that maybe they'd go there and leave the Dees. I've never done this myself. But here is a good resource (I'd use wood chips or found moss instead of cotton) www.beesinyourbackyard.com/post/how-to-make-a-bumble-bee-house Good luck!

Very, very good video. Really comfortable and cute to watch. What is the song used at the start?
