Happy Saturday! I have something fun for YOU today! Plezant's mane is looking a little rough. He has pulled it out, or got caught in places, and it's very uneven and just not very neat and tidy. So today I am going to show you how I trim my horse's mane.
It probably helps a little bit that I was a licensed cosmetologist for 16 years, so I have the background for hair cutting, and the tools that make the job a little bit easier - which I would highly recommend you use, if you are planning on cutting your horse's mane. (Links down below)
I am not a fan of pulling a mane. Sure it looks nice, but at what cost?
After I get his mane tangle free, and damp, I comb through it with a haircutting comb. Then I cut into the mane -not straight across the bottom. I just cut into it making it shorter. And I do a little bit at a time, and I never cut super high in one cut - you can always cut more - but you can't put it back!
I just repeat the process down the entire length of his mane until I am almost at the point of the length I want.
Next I pull the hair up - straight up and again cut into it - not straight across. By cutting into the hair, it helps it have a more natural edge. ANd by picking up the hair, you are adding some different lengths, also called layers.
Once I am done doing that, then I comb it flat again against his neck, and I go back and cut into the mane again. This is the fine tuning part. So I might cut a little more from behind if it looks a little chunky. Does that make sense?
And once I am done -done, I comb everything down, step back, and take a look at the bigger picture. If anything looks uneven, I go back and trim a little bit more.
Practice makes perfect, so if you are going to trim your horse's mane, do it a little bit at a time.
