+jksatte Hi Janice and thank you! Yes, I guess it's a good setup but there's heaps of room to improve yet at my place and sometimes I feel we have only just begun (unless I re-visit some shots of our property we we first got here and then the difference is quite big). However, I don't think I'll ever be truly satisfied and that's probably a good thing lol... Cheers :)

Chickens are great pets. Warm, they recognize their owners, and and far more intelligent than you might think. Mine used to run to see me when I came home from work. Also quite happy to perch on my chest if I'm by the pool reading a book. They don't seem to mind being picked up, they come when called, and have individual personalities.

Couple questions here... 1. How did you train your dog to NOT attack the birds? Or was dog raised around them? Is it possible to train? 2. I LOVE your style and how it's affordable! To dig post holes... I'm needing an easier way to dig them! I'm a very NEW urban chicken coop owner and need to predator proof my coop before my chicks arrive! I'm also a woman and my husband is gone a lot for work. What other options do I have to dig these holes? Outside of hiring someone... I watched your video on how to proof the fence by bending it and having it half on the ground, but just curious on other ideas you might have.

Just because your a women doesn't mean you can't do it? I'm a single 60 year old women and very capable one at that. Pretend you don't have a husband the only one is you and you got to get her done? My mom has always been that typical women the man has to do it, I can't do it, It's up to your father? I say "Bullshit to that mentality!" My daughter runs on her own steam too with two kids she is a powerhouse. You can rent a post hole digger you can buy a screw type hole digger or a jab and pull. My favorite is the screw type. I have gone to T post now to anchor my fencing to it is easier and never rots also 1.5" PVC pipe? Like I said I'm 60 so I am doing things better for me and long lasting. Go online and google PVC stuff etc...

Mark ! You may want to consider soaking your chicken feed or at least some of it, it will save you on the amount of feed you are using , check out Justin Rhodes KZbin channel and see how he feeds his chickens daily . I think soaking the feed over night will help lower the chickens consumption, it genius! the grain( feed) expands when soaked in a bucket over night, chickens eat less feed cause its swollen with water thus eating less feed, saving you $$

Would a submersible pump in your duck juice tank to transfer it to a holding tank help. Then the duck can have more use of their pool. Add dried blood to your juice and you will have plant rocket fuel. Thank for telling us about "Here we grow" . Tony is not very far from me, it would be nice if he could give the Dyfed Smallholders group a talk as I can see he researches his subjects well.
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 8 жыл бұрын
Yes I hadn't thought of a submersible pump I just have a small petrol pump that sucks and it's ok but it doesn't get the last few inches of "juice" out of the tub and it can be a little slow also. I'll look into submersibles - thanks for the suggestion! I will remember the dried blood suggestion also that's another good idea. Yep, I like UK Here We Grow Tony and Brian are both knowledgeable KZbin gardeners and they do like to get out and about in their local community as far as I know from their content. Cheers :)

Hello Mark, another great video One day once our Goannas & snakes finish their feeding on my chickens I will also have a set up like yours. I have followed your chicken videos with great interest and used many of your ideas. Do you have a video of the chicken coups you built? We have used lots of recycled items but bit the bullet and bought a shed 1.5 length X.8 wide x 1.8 high but it's not sturdy so we have stabilized it onto a pallet but your set up is great. Waiting patiently on your next video.
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 8 жыл бұрын
+MrsW. Hi MrsW, and thank you! Yeah I also did the "shed" thing for my coop and it worked out great the birds couldn't be happier and being galvanised it has lasted years. I might be able to find some video and stills for the early days if you are interested to see what it looked like in the very beginning and a narrative from then to now - what do you think? Cheers :)
@mrsw.306
@mrsw.306 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Mark, I did try to look at your video from 2012 about building the coup; but it would not play. We really like making things from recycled items either from the recycle land at the tip or from Gumtree. I need coups in which I can stand up in, so those need to be built by us I think. Can I ask one question if I may, Are gum tree branches ok to use. On the web they state that they are bad for their feet as they put too much pressure on the chickens at night. I find this hard to understand as it is nature so long as they are not too wide I didn't have a problem but the chicken groups I have joined all state it is bad for the chickens pads under their feet. Have you had this issue with any of your chickens?
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 8 жыл бұрын
MrsW. No I don't think the type of wood makes much difference to the perches or chickens feet. Try a few different types together and see which ones they prefer to perch on because they'll soon show you what they like and don't. Cheers :)

Hi, do you actually kill the fowls if you need to eat meat?
@jackiebinkley4391
@jackiebinkley4391 8 жыл бұрын
Turkeys are fun to raise. We raise about 6 every other year. You can do them whole or grind up the breast meat for ground turkey meat and freeze the lot. Don't forget to put the liver etc. in a freezer bag or wax paper and stuff inside the bird for when you actually get ready to cook and you will have the base for giblet gravy. We raise our own meat chickens, egg layers, geese and alternate years some ducks and turkeys. I did have to order some special big freezer bags for the turkeys. Unless you want them in the 38lb range they are usually at 13 to 16 pounds by 16 weeks. Love your videos.
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 8 жыл бұрын
+Jackie Binkley Awesome Jackie! Thank you for the info and your incite into keeping turkeys. Do you keep yours in an enclosed pen (with a roof so they can't fly over) or can they free-range like chickens? Cheers :)
@jackiebinkley4391
@jackiebinkley4391 8 жыл бұрын
+Self Sufficient Me Our turkeys are in a pen but that is just because it happens to be there and makes them easier to catch. The need for a pen depends on the breed of turkeys you raise. The big whites are way to heavy to fly but some of the heritage breeds which tend to be slimmer can definately fly. We always raise the big whites for eating but have raised the black spainish, bourbon, royal palms and narragansett breeds. They say not to put them directly in with chickens but in the past we did and never had problems. They were, however, in that case just the heritage breeds and not the big whites.

+home away from home Queensland Australia Hi there and thanks! Yes, we definately make sure the ducks and chickens are in bed before nightfall although they tend to go into the pen on their own and we just make sure the pen door is shut. Our free-ranging area is dog proof but through the night a fox will climb up to 2m so we can't take any chances after dark and that's why the pen has a 3m fence and a fox proof skirt all the way around. We have two water tanks and a bore plus town water but we only use the tank or bore water on the garden. Best of luck with your families new property. Cheers :)

oh, this is just what I wanted to see! the nitty gritty, the daily grind. but...I gotta love the accents. your quail sounds a lot like "coil" so my derpy mind is daydreaming of a little pen filled with little coil springs. bouncing around. I do have a question about this style of free ranging. you put the chickens away in the evening, I imagine. do you have troubles making sure all the birds are in the pen? I wonder if you could use a "one way gate" that you can close the door, in late afternoon, and by evening, they've all filtered back in, through that gate, and then you lock it, to prevent predators getting in? *ponder*
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 8 жыл бұрын
+Tizona Amanthia Hi there, I'm glad you liked the style of video I might do more of them in the future it seems to have been well received! Yes, I've been meaning to put an automatic door on the pen for literally years now but just haven't got around to doing it. Would you believe I actually purchased an automatic coop door about 5 years ago and I still have it in the shed... shameful really ;( Anyway, the ducks and chickens do generally put themselves to bed and we simply shut the pen door around dark (chickens always go back in to roost) but once or twice a year I might find a duck or two still in the dam at dusk - it's not hard to usher them back into the pen if that happens. Thank you! :)
@TizonaAmanthia
@TizonaAmanthia 8 жыл бұрын
ahhhh, okai, so I imagine you kinda close up the door, peek around the few WELL KNOWN places that the fowl might have wandered off to, and politely remind them it's bedtime, but by and large that's not your biggest concern, huh? I'm leaning towards getting ducks, for some reason, but perhaps chickens also take care of themselves, I suppose. cool though! thanks for the advice! is there a vid you have or know that would have "tips and tricks for beginners poultry farming?" [I could so just google that myself though.]
@Selfsufficientme

Yes exactly, we simply have a quick look around (at the door) just prior to shutting it to ensure they are all in bed - they almost always are... As for videos on beginning with poultry, I have quite a few on my channel and they are mostly basic poultry keeping. Cheers :)

any issues with rats or rodents eating your feed? do you think hanging feeders are any better in avoiding rodents?
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 8 жыл бұрын
+Blacklion 13 This is a good question and no I don't have any issues with rodents getting into the feeders and I never see any signs of it but we do have plenty of rats around so I'm sure a few of them pinch a grain here and there. Rats aren't the best at climbing up smooth surfaces so perhaps they find it hard to get into my feeders but hanging them is definately a good method to combat rodents if they are a problem yes that's true. Not at the moment thanks because I'm flat out looking after our chooks, ducks, and quail. I do see guinea fowl every day though as I drive past our neighbours several doors up the road - they're a nice looking bird and seem pretty easy to keep.

Turkeys - According to Joel Salatin, from Polyface Farm, you are ready to go. He says Turkeys are so dumb it takes about a dozen chickens to teach a turkey how to stay alive. :-)

Go somewhere else for that. There are plenty of animal killers on KZbin. Noe everyone wants to see that shit on a gardening channel. Not what I watch it for.
