Hi Madison! You hit the hammer right on the nail girl when you talked about how you keep your stress level low. Many new teachers think they have to create these out of the park lessons that take days and days of planning and prep when reality keeping it simple is the best way you can go!! Room transformations and constantly spending endless hours after school will break a teacher down!! Keep it simple and setting boundaries is key. I learned this the hard way! Love your videos, keep up the good work!

I needed this!! I’m graduating in April with the early childhood degree. I’m so glad you spoke about this and showed the curriculum to us! It helps a lot & gives me reassurance that you don’t have to go over the top. Thank you!!

First year second grade teacher here 🙋🏽♀️ our district got into benchmark this year, so the veteran teachers on my team is having to change everything they’ve taught before & as this is the only thing I’ve ever taught it’s been nice to find comfort in all of us being new to this curriculum! Really related to that feeling of we have to stop it’s too dificult for them

Love this!! I'm graduating next year for K-6 education and my biggest question has been "How do I know when and what to teach? Where do I start?" Love that you keep things more on the simple side the super extravagant lessons are nice but I feel like that would be overwhelming for a new teacher!

Love this! I use to think I would be the "over the top" teacher that did room transformations and made lesson plans over the top. After starting my teaching job in December I've honestly enjoyed making lessons that aren't going to need me to spend any extra money or make me have to work outside of school hours. I haven't felt overwhelmed because of that system. If I need to do anything at home I give myself 20-30 minutes max to get it done.

I know you might have gotten past this topic/ don’t teach it to ur kids because I was in 2nd grade a long time ago but I still remember this lesson my teacher taught me. It was a lesson about restating questions in answers and she was the best teacher I’ve had to date. She started the lesson with a simple question, “what is todays date?” And us second graders would simply respond with “April 12” but she said it was wrong. With every attempt we would get more detailed until we had “Wednesday, April 12 2014 in spring with warm weather,” etc etc. It was so incredibly frustrating but fun until somebody finally said “today is…..” and it was finally right. She explained to us why and how u restate your answers and I honestly have no memory on worksheets on this or anything but that discussion was enough to teach me and remember it for all of my school years, it’s still a vivid memory. If you have this in your curriculum and your kids do well discussion wise, I highly recommend this idea!

It is eye opening to see the difference between what elementary teachers are provided compared to what is true of high school teachers. High school we are responsible for finding the state standards for our subject and planning and creating curriculum based off of that. Taught at 3 schools in 2 states and have never been provided more than the textbook that sometimes comes with resources, but nothing as detailed as what you showed. Enjoy and appreciate that you are realistic and regularly provide information to help those who are new or not yet teachers (or those teaching secondary to see what elementary is really like!).
@lorettabernhardt4133 Жыл бұрын
I've worked at 3 elementary schools, one gave us everything, 1 gave us curriculum to use as a resource, and my current school gives us nothing. Of the 3, my current school is the highest achieving of the 3. The one with the most resources was the lowest performing. It's weird how that works out.

Including myself there’s 4 second grade teachers and we’re all self contained. When it comes to lesson planning we all split the subjects 🙌🏽. Our reading curriculums Amplify and it’s all there for us, basically scripted. And Science and Social studies, we integrate it with Literacy.

This has made me so happy im in Australia. We have 1 curriculum. Just one that every single school follows. Everyone does it in a different order. But its just 1 and you do the same thing at every school. So if you move schools you still know that those students have learnt this this and this. So simple

We use “Wonders” for Language Arts-I teach a dual language classroom. I like it bc it includes consumable workbooks where students can take notes & highlight on the actual reading text, which reduces the need for copying worksheets. Students can also use the digital form if they are absent.

I am so glad you mentioned that because I am still in college and a will be taking my second education course and I thought the same thing. Like how do we know what to teach because they haven't taught us that. But it makes sense now after what you said.
@johnlopez39962 жыл бұрын
You are spot on about having to adjust and adapt materials during a lesson. Every class is different and the academic needs vary. I commend you for doing this on a regular basis. During this year of schooling pacing guides can go out the window. Benchmark Advanced is a pain in the neck. My school district had this bright idea of not starting with Unit 1. It had all of the elementary school teachers start at Unit 3 which is very dry and over many kids' heads. This makes about much sense as ordering cheeseburgers without the cheese. You have some kids who have not been in a physical classroom since March 13, 2020, and they are expected to go out of order in a reading series? Thank you for your video. Take care.

I also use Benchmark Advance to teach 2nd grade! I’m very torn. I like the content and the readers the kids get, but the tests are so over their heads and the writing is beyond 2nd grade level. My kids struggle with it so I’m always switching it up. I’m also supplementing math and we are working on coins. My groups of kids missed the last 1/4 of kindergarten because of Covid two years ago, so they are SO far behind. Glad to know I’m not alone. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re doing awesome!!! 🥰
