I recently joined my church choir after not singing in a choir for several decades (I am in my 60s!). To make matters more difficult, the choir director loves to assign difficult pieces, and I am surrounded by very talented and experienced singers. Also, it’s a small choir, so I am one among 3-4 altos: my mistakes can’t be ignored! But I’m determined to rise to the challenge! I begin my at-home practice with one of your warm-ups, and you have helped me gain some confidence! Thank you!

I like this one. You seriously cut it off on the F which is the highest note I can sing (badly). You understand the alto!

This Vocal warm up is perfect for the music I’m working on right now we are singing Beethoven’s ninth, which has a very large alto range. I like that this warm up engages my muscles right out of the gate, then separates my head and chest voice and warms them up before going into my break, then my break is in discernible. Thank you.

Not an alto, but I find this to be excellent way to fully warm up the lower extremes and speaking for plays without mics.

Hello, thank you so much for your great work in this channel, you have already helped me so much!❤I wanted to ask if you could maybe do a video on the different voice types. I have read that the quality of the voice is much more important than the actual range and there are some mezzos who sound exactly like sopranos without the darkness und richness that i was told mezzos would have. I have also been put in 3 different voice categories by different voice teachers, so i am really confused.I know this is a difficult and kind of controversial topic but maybe you can bring some clarity to this. I would be very thankful and thank's again for your great content! Many greetings from Austria

I'd be interested in a video with a full exercise routine focused on increasing vocal range.
@MarinaBonatti-q9x Жыл бұрын
(I've seen some tip videos on the channel, but you were supposed to apply them specifically in a song, whereas I was looking for a more general exercise routine, that does not depend on any particular song).

i really can't figure this out, because i was convinced that i'm an alto (i have a "female" voice and i perform better in lower ranges), but i cannot hit most of the higher notes in this, but i could go just a bit lower. incredibly gender-affirming, at the very least.
@aratinga772 ай бұрын
It isn't really about gender. I am a woman, and I have trouble with the higher notes too. I normally sing tenor (all my life) but when I joined a treble choir I started singing "Alto II". A lot of the 4-part music is just a little too high and hits me square in the break (pasaggio). Above the pasaggio is the head voice. This exercise works on your "head voice", which is half your voice. So you have to cultivate it. You may actually be a tenor. I use that one, and also the Baritone exercises (but I can't get all the way to the bottom of those).
@jesclifford882 ай бұрын
Have you tried ‘simply sing’ app-it may say you’re a different range? Like the commenter above said though, it’s not about gender. I also don’t think there’s a set in stone range that an ‘alto’ can do, you may be able to sing notes I can’t and vice versa 😊

i love how you started with breathing exercises-- if you make another one of these, could you have more in the first few exercises? this could be a matter of individual preference, but i find i warm up best when i start w sirens. i mentioned this in a diff video, but the range doesn't go low enough and goes too high from the get go for an alto.

I realized that one of the weaknesses of my voice is register shifting particularly from high to low.
@30DaySinger19 күн бұрын
Recognizing that is a big step forward! Smoothly shifting between registers takes practice, so try exercises that glide from high notes down to low, like gentle sirens or slides, which can help connect the registers. Focus on supporting each note with steady breath control to avoid sudden drops or cracks. Over time, these exercises will help you transition more easily and strengthen those tricky shifts in your range!

Why does their opinion matter? You're practicing something and working at getting better. Just be mindful of the time you're practicing.

I’m having issues getting to the head notes. I don’t have a problem singing the lower notes, but it seems like it all comes out of my chest and throat (If that makes sense). I’m. pretty sure I’m an alto, but I don’t have any previous experience. Not sure if I’m doing something wrong.

Don’t be discouraged-developing a strong head voice takes time and practice. Keep experimenting with these techniques, and you'll see progress!
