Off grid living, particularly in Alaska is quite notably not always simple and requires great energy and time, however we often feel comforted in our humble cabin surrounded by such incredible landscape. Every day we strive to create this magical life where we can learn to embrace each and every experience.

Isn't it sad how much beauty we take for granted? The sunlight through the chickens feathers, the sound of coffee being poured and food sizzling in the skillet. Look at those jars of preserved food, all the work that went into them...so pretty like works of art. The sweet dogs and cat that add warmth to the home. The simple things in life are what really makes us happy. Thank you for another awesome video, always my favorite to see a new one posted.

While the oven was still hot, my grandmother would take the leftover pie crust, brush on a little butter and then sprinkle on cinnamon sugar and bake the dough. Us kids would fight for it. Great memory!

Leftover pie dough is also easily converted into a hand pie, by filling with jam.

I put some cheese, tomato sauce , herbs, onion in leftover pastry. Similar to a tiny calzone . Great for lunches with a salad. When you have the oven on, bake two or more items, one for later or extra meals for the freezer.

Ariel-Whenever I do a savory pie dough, I sprinkle some herbs in the dough. I personally sprinkle some celery leaves or seeds in the crust plus whatever flavor you want in the filling. Just adds another layer of flavor to the dish! I thought your crust was gorgeous!

@@charlesbaldo this is not true. The State of Alaska has a sales tax, and the buroughs (counties) have their own separate property tax, and it's based on assessment of property. Some buroughs require as-builts of new or existing structures if there are changes so that the owners can get taxed appropriately. In Willow (where they live) I'm assuming their property tax mil rate is quite low. .4-.7

I just heard a suggestion that those wire shelves can be installed ‘upside down’ to create a lip around the perimeter. Helps to keep stuff from falling off. Love the stainless kitchen surface on wheels!! 👍

Here is an idea for you. Think about putting a castor kit on the shelves and your canning jar cabinet to use it as a another moveable island. With castors. I've used shelves like that. Worth every Penny and you can gets a castor kit. Those shelves can stand with 6000lbs. Imagine all those shelves with a dbl layer of the biggest canned foods.

Just a little tip in storing your canned/jar foods , keep them covered from the light of day with something to block the rays. Food will stay much better looking and tasting ...Love you shows.

You can use an older t shirt or cheese cloth to drain out shredded potatoes with put your shredded potatoes on the cheese cloth gather the cloth around it twist the cloth til all the liquid is drained works great especially for potato pancakes

Just a little info. The plastic pieces that go in the pole part of the shelves break easy !!! We have three of those shelving units and the plastic part has broken ( the plastic that goes in the metal ) and the shelves don't stay level. We had to purchase more parts from manufacturer. You can put cardboard on your garden to keep weeds down,in the aisles or even in the rows. In a no-till system, you can put some compost or soil or mulch on top of the cardboard to keep it anchored and make sure it gets wet to start to break down. Works great and useful!

Another fabulous intro. So happy you found a way to make room for those seedlings! Things may be extra cozy for a while, but it is great that you can get them all started already. I am just doing mine now in my basement. Put the carrots and radishes in the bed yesterday. We still have some nights in the 20's but they both like cold. Your pot pie looked so amazing! Fantastic crust! The chickens look so happy and it is great that they are laying! I use those metro shelving units for my pantry and in my ceramic studio. We still have some dried Morel mushrooms that we picked in 1976. We dried them on a picnic table on newspapers. The news print was supposed to drive out any insects during the drying process. After 45yrs they still look good.

I'm in central Florida, too. We have lettuce, tomatoes, garlic chives, collards, mustards going on. This past weekend I sowed Clemson spineless okra and Blue Lake green beans.

Great working together and having beautiful and inspiring videos. One issue i want to express is this: Snow removal from your sheds, etc. Snow actually insulates the structure it is on. The only reason to remove the snow is to reduce the stress on the structure. If the structure houses plants or other items that you want not to get overly cold; then it is best to leave a reasonable amount of snow on the structure. You know that a layer of snow layer is going to protect the inside of the structure from the outside temperature which you know will fall significantly below the temp inside the structure. You know this is true because why folks make a snow cave to protect themselves from the bitter cold outside! Roy

Was going to suggest the same. you can get heavey duty wood casters (wheels) for wood shelves. They even make some to fit that wire shelf they assembled. can get from lowes, Home depot, most large hardware stores and of course the web !
