Simple Living Alaska

Күн бұрын

We put the side by side to work in our back forest hauling fallen logs for our conex lean-to shelter. Although much of the mature White Spruce trees have taken a hit in our area we plan to make the most of the standing dead trees. After retrieving the logs and peeling the bark, we burn the ends of the posts and set them in their permanent destination.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

To make sure your poles are plumb, take a string with a weight on the end, hold it up in front of you a ways from the pole and sight along the string with the pole. The string is plumb so you can adjust your pole one way, then go to 90 degrees and sight again. Works every time for the longest poles. Got this from some utility guys putting in telephone poles.

That Bark Beetle killed a lot of pines in the area I used to camp in Utah .... that was quite a few years now. It was so dry in the understory that it seemed like you could start a fire just by looking at it .... it was raining pine needles. Trees that had to be hundreds of years old killed in no time. The devastation was heart wrenching. The aerial view of your property painted a sad picture. I can only hope you are able to turn a lot of it into usable lumber and firewood. Bet you will be soooo happy when you can get your equipment under cover. Take care Eric & Arielle.

Indeed, makes me want to cook and I have no one else to cook for. I've got to exercise self control or my budget will not hold up. I'm trying to grow, of course inspired to do so but out of six, I got one broccoli. I saw two cauliflower just disappear, not much left on the other two and there are six brussel sprouts, stunted at the moment. I did not try cabbage and I have a small harvest of beans, no cucumbers or squashes but have flowers. Maybe next year I'll do better. These young people are champions, there should be an Olympian entry for homestead building. These two would bring back Gold.

Much of the pleasure of watching your vlog is how well you work together. It is wonderful to see a good marriage thriving these days. I really enjoy your dialogue, too. I can hear what you are saying when you directly speak to the camera, but miss a lot when you are talking to each other and not directly addressing the audience. Does anyone else have this issue? I turn the volume up and down many times during your vlog in order to hear or not break the old eardrums. Have you ever tried individual mics? Some of the other vloggers use them and I don't have any trouble hearing them. It would be awesome to hear more of your content.

Great to see you as always! Good to see you using chaps with the saw when felling. You generally choose a good balance between safety and Getting Stuff Done, but in this case I'd strongly suggest you get a helmet. Especially when felling dead trees, branches fall and if it's a naked head underneath, it ain't pretty. I know armchair quarterback comments are a pain, but if the risk is worth chaps, it's worth a helmet!

You guys are amazing! All your hard work, whether it's building, fishing, gardening, hunting rewards you with so much. Partnership, love, laughter and the companionship of your pets completes the picture. Nice hole you dug there Bandit! He wants a bigger pond.

You guys are such hard working individuals with such amazing insight on projects for your homestead. I love your vlogs and can't wait to see what is next. Can't wait until you start canning and freezing for the winter months and beyond. Take care guys!

Just a tip I learned when installing posts. Put a sawmill offcut/piece of timber in the back of the hole. When you lift the post it won’t drag soil down into the bottom of the hole🍺🍺

I really enjoy your videos! With all the dead trees you have and with the sawmill it would be enoyable watching you add a lodge like room onto your house.

As a metis (white/native american) canadian when we're going in and out of the bush in spring/summer., we use beaver cut logs from near by dams to fill the ruts, not the strips you guys used, but full logs. then the strips or sticks like you originally did longways to cross the logs. We do use smaller machines, small honda quads, so idk how it would work with your 6x6 side-by-side but I'd bet it would work as a small makeshit mud bridge. It either sinks into the ground or needs to be extended each year. Nice to see videos from people who live close to the climate im used to, Look forward to each one!

Northwoodsman1 (i think is the name)Marty makes corduroy roads like you, cuts up the trees & just drops lengths of them dropped side by side in holes.

Does this method only apply to white, Canadian Native Americans or could I do it too?
