Some people truly find themselves at home in front of the camera and Sir Chris is one of them. The fact he is such a great leader, climber, AND perfectly natural on screen is why he is so well known.

Chris knew all about the scientific position of lack of oxygen at 8,000 metres from his Kongur expedition where he had three top British oxygen specialists do copious tests on Pete Boardmand and Joe Tasker so he could never plead altitude ignorance. Yet he abandoned Pete Boardmand and Joe Tasker to their collective and individual fate in 1982 so hat he could harness the glory maybe. .

He’s always said to learn the craft. Which is a real lesson on life as much as climbing. So well said and amazingly refreshing and down to earth about it all.

The tragedy of 1982 was a bit of a comedown for his leadership skills. Chris has been so blessed by having such amazingly strong British climbers to support him!

Chris does sound good on film but in reality he had to be nursed up the Kongur and he withdrew himself altogether from the Everest east north east ridge British expedition 1982 because he was scared and too old to hold his own! Later he had to be nursed up the South Col route of Everest as a guest of the Norwegians.

Don Whillans was a magnificent climber and Chris cut him out of all British expeditions because Don criticized Chris in the Sunday Times! What an idiot!

What has happened to berghaus as a brand? In the 80s/90s they made the absolute best rucksacks and waterproofs. Now it’s just cheap stuff (I suppose a bit like vango) Fair play in still sponsoring two top climbing legends though. As a kid of the 80s I always thought I’d like a berghaus jacket when I grow up. Now I’m grown up I tend to buy mountain equipment!
