I dated a guy who, at the very beginning, insisted on setting healthy sexual boundaries. He saw me as a daughter and image bearer of God. Also, he treated me, and every woman he encountered every day with the utmost respect. I married him. Best decision of my life!

Another thing that bothers me, in church when it comes to girls we don't talk about pornography and lust on that way. We assume that boys struggle with this, and to us, women, is simply keep our virginity. But purity is so much more than that. And it's horrible because when we don't talk about it, a girl that struggles with this kind of problem feels like trash because she feels like she is alone. We need to talk about that inside the church. The healing begin when we recognize our sin, and if someone feels that he/she is alone on this, they may never open up about it :/

I think something we don't acknowledge enough is intimacy with God. Intimacy with God is unlike any other form of intimacy and the more of it you have, that is to say, the closer you draw to God, the easier it becomes to apply His principles. Yes, some things you will have to consciously decide against and leave behind, but in my experience, when you build on your relationship with God, you tend to naturally, for example, dress more modestly, swear less, or even just have a greater disdain for worldly things. It is not always easy of course because we get tempted and fall into bad habits, but this deserves to be brought up; it is so encouraging to know that Jesus takes that heavy load from you so that you can strive to live a holy life.

*The idea of "modesty" is an absolute joke. God created us to be fully naked with NO SHAME and it was only when we started seeing the world through our eyes rather than through God's eyes that we started viewing our bodies as disgraceful. 99% of clothing has nothing to do with trying to be sexy, it's just the person wearing what makes them comfortable. Clothing doesn't influence evil actions, immoral character does.*

I find this purity culture so strange. I became a Christian as a young woman in the 1980’s. Purity wasn’t talked about..ie what you wear , how you act etc… I went to a large evangelical church and really enjoyed going to church and the singles ministry. Our emphasis was on drawing closer to God and discipleship. No one dressed inappropriately or acted inappropriately! We fellowshipped and learned about the Bible. I guess what I’m trying to say is if our focus is on the Lord then everything else falls into place.. such as modesty etc…

What purity culture does to men is exactly what Adam set a precedent of within our spiritual nature. Instead of taking responsibility for our shortcomings as men, the blame has been shifted to women. I used to fall in line with the idea that women need to dress modestly because of guys being the way they are, but over time, God has softened my heart to see that the sole issue is not women dressing provocatively, but guys looking at women with lust. Yes, women dressing provocatively is something we should reject in the church. We should make that known, but the reasoning for it is not because men are "visual creatures." I can understand the argument that women should try to dress with modesty because we are to be set apart from the world. I can also see the argument that they need to dress modestly because it's disingenuous to live according to your flesh and proclaim to be a Christian. What I cannot see is telling women that they need to do it for men and men alone. Yes. Try not to cause a brother or sister to stumble, but how can you make sure that standard fits when every man is different? Some men may not care at all. Some men may need to gouge their eyes out cause everything they look at is turned perverse. It's too much pressure to put on someone, especially when a lot of them are not even trying to seduce men. At the end of the day, this issue stems from men not filling their roles correctly. Us men have a HUGE responsibility when it comes to being spiritual leaders within the church and within our own families. As men, we need to fight against rampant sex culture so that it does not corrupt our youth as to not pervert our young boys and girls. As men, we need to lead by example like Apostle Paul did with his churches ("Imitate me as I imitate Christ"). As men we need to take responsibility when we are in the wrong. This is one of those times. It's not a woman's fault that we lust over her. When we start shifting the blame on others in the body of Christ, it shows we are less spiritual leaders and more spiritual tyrants. What did Joseph do when tempted by the Potiphar's wife? He didn't turn around and go "Hey now, Mrs. Potiphar's wife. You need to dress more modestly, so I don't look at your body in a sexual way!" He ran from it. We must flee from sexual immorality and perversion. Well what does that mean? It means that when we are faced with lust, we must flee from the LUST, not the woman per se, (unless ofc she is actually trying to trap you and sexually manipulate you) and run to God for direction. An example in our modern lives is when dating. When guys get the urge to want to do sexual things with their girlfriend, they shouldn't hide from it or stop being around their significant other. Men should instead run to God for direction, in turn fleeing from the sexual perversion facing them.

@Jacob, I feel like the biggest problem with your argument, is that you're making this a completely on sided issue. Let me explain. Men need to learn how to control their ideas. However; if a woman is dressing immodestly, their heart is not right, and they need to get it right with God. *REGARDLESS* of if a man is not lusting, if a woman is dressing immodestly, they they are failing to live up to the standard that God wants them and elevating them. With the issue of modesty, this is NEVER talked about it's only "MEN SHOULDNT LUST", when people fail to forget that a woman has a responsibility to not dress proactively, *FOR THE SAKE OF PLEASING GOD*

I heard a powerful story once of a Pastor or Youth Leader giving the "Withered Rose/Used Car Example." They were basically saying whenever you have sex with more people you look like a withering Rose. And the phrase this teacher actually said was like this, "No one wants a withered, used up Rose." And someone in the congregation screamed back, "JESUS WANTS THE ROSE!" I had this same idea jammed into my head, that basically however much you have sinned sexually the less valuable you are. It has screwed me up and my thinking. As a young teenager, and young adult, I struggled heavily with Porn, and committing sexual sins with girlfriends. Those sins did really hurt my view of sexuality. But, Jesus is repairing and making right that view. I have come so far from who I once was. That "used car/withered rose" mentality made me believe I would never be sexually good enough for my wife, and I was "devalued" or "spoiled goods" for my sin. This thought process of purity culture has good intentions, but it is a horrible way to teach it. I think the example I gave should be a standard when teaching purity. You can state the good, holy goal of remaining Pure. But, just like every single one of us. We all need Jesus. We all have fallen short of the glory of God. In many ways we have all failed to sin. We are all in need of a Savior. Sexual Sin is NOT any more of a sin than other sins. Yes, I know the verse about it being a sin against your own body. But, the penalty is still the same. For the Wages of Sin is Death. But, thanks be to God for Christ Jesus who bore our sins and paid I debt. Your a beautiful person made in the image of God. And no matter if you have been steeped in sexual sin your whole life, or you are a thief, or you are crippled by addiction, or maybe you're a murderer like Paul. Remember this, "died for ALL your sins, he wants to meet you where you are. There is no Withered, and unwithered roses. We are all stained by our sins, and Christis our Savior to cleanse us. of that sin. Sorry for the long comment, This "Withered Rose" example really helped me understand Purity Culture, and I figured it would help someone else.

I remember being told that just about every guy was imagining me naked. I think it made me believe that I had to set that bar really low. Many Christian girls just think they have to settle for a guy who's allowing porn to rule constantly in his life, and a lot of similar teaching made me very distrustful of guys. This idea that guys can hardly help themselves, etc. So many Christian men seem to just see me as a good marriage opportunity instead of as a person. Unfortunately I, too, often feel like I'm evaluating every guy as a marriage opportunity instead of a person. I wish we'd learned (instead of purity culture but also instead of the sexual revolution culture) that sex isn't the best thing that'll happen in our lives. It's not the most important thing to revolve our identities around. In dating, gender identity, premarital abstinence, etc. it's so important to find our identity and our purpose in Christ. As a woman, I don't need to wait until I'm married to start my life and ministry. I am a Christian, and my abundant life is NOW. Would it be wonderful to have a great marriage and sex life? Absolutely. I'd have no complaints if that entered my life. But I can simultaneously recognize that sex and the pursuit of happiness can never trump the truth and contentment found in the Gospel of Christ.

Most of religion is embellishments and man-made, self serving additions that are more about establishing a culture that serves an powerstructure than actually communing with God. Its unfortunate to watch something that is supposed to bring peace bring so many strife and heartache. its best to establish your own relationship with God and be really careful about the "middlemen" ....

First time someone acknowledged that purity is for men and for women alike in my life was when I entered the Catholic Church. We were talking about clothes very casually when this young guy went “yeah of course guys need to keep this in mind too, like just because you’re a guy doesn’t mean you can show up to church wearing speedos”. I have been laughing about that mental image ever since. Here they say that both genders should have their shoulders and knees covered, that’s considered appropriate wear. I think that’s fair! And I love that they acknowledge how men can tempt women too. I used to feel so sinful when no one in my Protestant church ever mentioned how women can feel those feelings too. Not even when I prompted that discussion, they’d want to handle it Also the thing with “having your purity taken from you”. One of the biggest reasons I left my Protestant church is because they never talked about that. In the Catholic Church they have to keep an open discussion about it now thanks to those huge scandals a few years ago. Honestly I was scared of the clergy at first because I thought they were all like those villains, but then I met our cardinal and I decided to be straightforward when he was already talking about purity, and ask “what about the purity of those kids? And people like them?”. What followed was the best moment of my life. He spoke so kindly and warmly about how great the suffering of victims is and how we must never blame them for what happened, rather to come together and try to help them in their recovery. He said that that is one of the most intimate thefts and deepest pains one can experience, and it’s one of the things that affect your relationship with God the most (esp in the case with those kids, having a parental figure or someone who represents Jesus himself doing that to you). I had similar experiences to those kids in the scandals and I always felt ashamed, but when I heard that Catholic priest, in such a high position (first cardinal ever of my region - I thought he’d be less down to earth), speak of it and say exactly what I’d needed to hear, I knew that I had found the place where I would heal. 3 years now and I thank God every day that He led me here. Also sorry for the poor grammar I am not native :))

Salvation is by grave alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone. For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man unto whom the Lord imputeth righteousness without works Not according to works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. To be saved, you must 1. Admit you are a sinner (Romans 3:10,23) 2. Realize you deserve God's wrath because of your sin (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, Romans 6:23) 3. Believe Jesus died, was buried, and rose again from the dead to accomplish the salvation of sinners (1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Romans 4:25, Romans 5:8) 4. Repent of sin (change your mind about sin, salvation, and the savior) (Acts 17:30, Mark 1:15) 5. Trust Jesus alone to save you from your sins (John 1:12, John 3:14-21, John 3:36, Ephesians 1:12-20, Romans 10:9-13, Matthew 1:24)

@@RG-vn9kg I believe you are replying in an attempt to draw this woman away from catholicism. I may be wrong, and I love you. However I also believe of that is the case that you are misguided and have been taught falsely about what the Catholic church teaches on the matters about which you expressed. I would also lile to add that Martin Luther falsely added the word "alone" into his bible translation and this is the cause for this entire scandal and difference. The Bible never said that. Besides that, let me explain briefly- we believe that if you have true faith, your works will follow. Faith without works is dead- because what person can sin boldly every day and then claim he is of the Father? By Grace he trusts? He does not love the Father and the Father does not know him. God has infinite grace and this is a tender topic- but if you love God, you will do good. You will do bad as well and regret it. You will ask forgiveness. If you do bad knowlingly and without remorse, and claim to have Gods protection by grace- you are like a parasite of a friend. Do you expect Him to treat a parasite well? It is chaff. This is the reason for our teaching. You must not lose sight of the span of history- in the past there were many who claimed they could do anything they wanted and be justified. Killing, murder, rape, and simply by trust in Heaven they would be saved. No. You must. You MUST. Have repentance. Even if it is in your final breath it may be enough- but you should not trust yourself to a breath- rather you should entrust your whole life to Gods work on Earth.

@@ClockworkAnomaly Of course, saving faith is followed by good works (Ephesians 2:10, James 2:14-26, Romans 6, I can go on). The Church teaches that faith is not sufficient to save, that one needs both faith and works to be saved. Scripture is clear that to be saved, one must stop trusting in their righteousness and trust Jesus alone. (Romans 10:1-13, Romans 4:1-10, Ephesians 1:11-14, 1 Thessalonians 1:9). To share my personal testimony, I grew up Catholic, went to mass every Sunday, and still lived in sin (drank alcohol, watched sinful movies, cussed, you name it), but God saved me from sin at an old fashioned Baptist Church, and ever since I confessed and forsook those sins, and praise Jesus, I was forever changed. Catholicism didn't cleanse me of my sin, only Jesus blood could and did do that (1 John 1:7). I have a High Priest in Jesus to whom I can confess all my sin, and he intercedes for me (Hebrews 7:20-25). He advocates for me before God the Father (1 John 1:7-2:2). I do not need an earthly priest as my go-between, I can go before God's Holy Throne directly (Hebrews 4:14-16, Hebrews 10:17-22). In him I found all righteousness, redemption, godly desire to turn to him, holy hatred of sin, and joy. In Catholicism, I never understood what Calvary meant. Why Jesus died, what that means for us today. All I knew was "confess to a priest", "say 10 Hail mary's", "memorize these words" I did not know Jesus. Now, I found him, and that's all that matters. I hope you understand what I have tried to say. I don't think we're too different, but it must be said that only Jesus can save. I cannot earn my way to heaven, but I have received a free gift, and want to live in a way that pleases Jesus because I love him since he loved me (John 3:16-21, 1 John 4:7-10, 19, Galatians 2:19-21) I do love you too man, and will be praying for you, as I trust you will also do for me. I hope you see my heart in this, I don't hate you, but I love you enough to tell you what's what.

I am a woman who grew up in Christian culture during the purity movement. I never thought those things. Honestly, In my mind men and women were equal with the virginity issue. Also I was never taught that it was my responsibility to keep the boys pure. In my mind , how I dressed was an outward expression of my own morals and my commitment to my own purity. My purity was about my relationship with God not my relationship with boys. Also I was taught to dress modestly to protect myself from the men who have bad motivations. It’s so weird for me to hear this stuff about the purity culture because I didn’t experience it like that.

Honestly, the most direct interaction I've had with purity teaching was in one of my youth church services where they showed us a video about something called a purity ring. But even then, my church never pressed us with a lot of the lies talked about in this video. Still, I feel like for me, as a I grew older, these lies crept into my life through very indirect and subtle ways. Now that I'm watching this video, I'm starting to realize flaws in my thought life about this subject. Hey dude! Love your videos so much. Thank you so much for posting this; as a woman, I was raised in a very strict purity culture setting and feel that maybe if I was taught differently about how God loves us and sees sexuality and that my virginity doesn't determine my entire worth, then maybe I would have had a better understanding of how sexuality works, since I didn't end up waiting and fell into years of sexual immorality before God delivered me. Ultimately I am 100% responsible for my own sin so don't get it twisted, but I wish I could have seen my worth through God's lens and understood why He wanted us to be clothed in dignity and to be modest, while holding an equal standpoint among the sexes instead of a blatantly misogynistic one that leaves most of the responsibility and blame on the woman, but also teaches guys that they are nothing but a hormonal s*x machine and keeps them from talking to us girls. Editing tip: would you mind upping the volume for your videos? Your audio is a little quiet and I can't really hear you well even with my laptop speaker all the way up :)

Someone replied to my comment on tiktok and told me about so called "Christo- paganism" two words that should never go together. I got into it and ended up calling myself pagan. I started celebrating pagan festivals and it was so corrupting. One time my dog was really sick and I noticed that paganism is so faithless, I felt like I had no one to trust, I felt like the world didn't want to listen to me, but then I remembered the promises of God and that we can trust God. So I prayed to God and my prayer was answered but as my dog got better, I tried to move on. Situations where I realised I can trust God kept coming along and one time I realised this, I keep coming back to God whenever I feel I need Him. So this time I agreed with the fact I need to stay with Him. So I started my journey of Christianity and faith and now that I'm 15, somehow most of my classmates know I'm a believer in Christ 😁. I'd love to hear yours if you wouldn't mind telling me :D

Regarding the myth that you’ve “failed” because you lost your virginity before marriage, I would point to Rahab, the harlot who helped the Hebrew spies escape Jericho. She became the mother of Boaz, the upright man who married Ruth. As such, Rahab was the great-great grandmother of King David and an ancestor of Jesus. Rahab’s virginity was long gone by the time she met Boaz’s father, Salmon, but even so, she raised a kind, generous son who later loved Ruth, a foreign widow in need, and Rahab was chosen to be in the genealogy of Jesus. If you lost your virginity before marriage - either through force or bad decisions - God can still transform your life and give you a wonderful spouse and family.

I grew up w those messages. I didn’t kiss a man until I was nearly 25. 3 years into marriage, I went to a church that had the purity sex talk and cried in the parking lot bc we did some foreplay outside of marriage. I had been married to the only man I ever kissed. Then after 5 years of marriage, my husband I had waited for, left….despite my desperate attempts to keep us together. “Divorced”is such a harsh label and I have this fear that God won’t bless me if I were to remarry. I truly believed marriage was forever and that my partner believed the same. Another lie, is that if you mess up sexually, you can ruin or cancel the relationship w the person “God has for you.” Another lie is “God has one person just for you.” There is a lot of resentment toward purity culture lies. Its just so hard to reprogram yourself from that.

Needless to say he chose porn over our marriage. If a man or woman has a spirit of lust or any other demonic spirit, it can jump from person to person. I started feeling really low about myself for a few years! At the age of 30 almost 31. I was 29 when the divorce was finalized. I was hurt but felt free. However, I only think of me having been with one man and that makes me feel good because I only chose to be with one man who I’m married to. I do think men need to learn how to control their attractions to women. I also think women need to dress appropriately. What’s appropriate? Well, you don’t show off your private areas and go without a bra. If the way you’re dressing looks like you’re purposely trying to have men lust after you then yeah it’s inappropriate. I am glad that you’re letting everyone know that it’s not just women who should be doing the right thing. I mean women practice from a young age to be appropriate, to learn how to deal with our hormones and our unstable emotions. Boys should be taught the same thing at a young age too not just women.

I moved away from Christianity due to idol of relationships with men. I have been walking with the lord 1 year now. I praise God. I never knew my self worth before thinking it was tied to relationships, romantic dating relationships. Great topic to discuss.

I think you're right that for being a place that talks so much about grace, redemption, forgiveness and joy, there's a lot of harm being done when someone doesn't meet the cultural standards. And I really appreciate the fact that you're saying how it isn't a girl's fault if someone is experiencing lust for her!! That's a big one...

EXCELLENT VIDEO. It’s not about extremes it’s about what is biblical before and after marriage, or every if u choose or end up never being married (which is fine too, the Bible also speaks positively on that as well). Well done sir.

My father was raised in a biblical culture really similar to an extreme version of purity culture. His shame was so heavy that I fear he will never return to God. But I pray that my heart will be with him, so that he ends up where our Father in heaven has planned for him

I've read a couple books around this sort of topic. Both of them were by Elizabeth Elliot. I'm curious to know what characterizes a book that is on the negative side of purity culture. I'd be really interested to see a video about Elliot's work, too! Love your content :)

How hilarious that we would tell girls directly (or indirectly) that boys are predators and that at least eventually they will be the leaders of the church and their families. Great video, everyone is responsible for their own sin, we ought to be mindful to not tempt one another out of love for each other and Ann understanding that others struggle in ways that we don’t, and quit blaming and demonizing each other.

Okay, I actually think purity culture is pretty good, I think it should just apply equally to men. That is, we need MORE purity, not less.

Where I disagree is that women and men should consider causing their brothers and sisters to stumble at what they wear.

No one can cause you to sin in that way. You are pulled away by YOUR OWN LUSTS. James 1:14

@@Angismit you can be both be pulled away by your own lust and another can cause you to stumble as well. 1 Timothy 2 calls women to be modest as well as Titus and 1 Peter. The Greek word used is shamefastedness and means that women would be ashamed to wear anything that could cause another brother to stumble. Women are to not to dress provocatively and of-course men should not lust regardless. But please stop this nonsense that sisters should consider their brothers in Christ when they dress and men should consider their sisters as well.

I think that purity is more important than Virginity while they both have alot of the same things purity is more than just virginity it is a heart issue cause some people made mistakes with their virginity and I believe that if they have God he can give them back their purity which is more like a promise

Saying that virginity is your most valuable gift is like saying the most valuable thing about you is your sexuality. Another thing is that traditionally in the church your virginity was more than physical. If your only experience with sex is assault then according to the traditions of the Church you are still a virgin since it was without your consent. Your mind and heart weren't in the experience, only your body. Think of all of the female martyrs who were r*ped during the tortures they endured before dying for Jesus but the Church still calls them virgin saints.

I get that this video is about being against the overly legalistic side, and I do appreciate it, but I think some specific counter points need to be made lest some people take everything as an excuse to shirk their own responsibilities. Maybe just not in the video itself. Just remember as you read this comment that this is meant to be complimentary, not a rebuttal. I don't think David is saying that we should count virginity as basically just repentance since the last time you committed sexual immorality instead of never, because the Bible does talk about virginity as a lifelong thing. But rather he's saying that we should be less concerned about whether or not we still have our virginity, and more concerned with that God will forgive us if we repent and trying to live holy now. Also we think of virginity as only about girls, when the Bible doesn't limit sexual purity to one half of the population(I think we may get this impression because the Bible specifically talks to men about their daughters on this issue). Yes, it does say that HE(the man that looketh with lust upon a woman) commits adultery in HIS heart, but it also says "with HER". The verse is rebuking both people. (yes, this still applies with the genders reversed) Yes, there's a difference between attraction and lust. I once heard it put like this: "It's okay to dress to be attractive, it's not okay to dress to attract(to yourself)" I was expecting this comment to be longer, but David did a pretty good job of not leaving ditches open.

I just love that I found your channel!! I plan to watch a few more episodes and then share you with my kids!!! I was raised SDA and my best friend was raised in a Christian homeschool family in the early stages of the purity movement, mid to late 90s. Anyways we have disagreed about what our daughters wear. My daughter is very curvy and with body image issues she feels more comfortable in tighter fitting clothes that show her fitness instead of baggy clothes that make her look heavy. My friends daughters are more childlike figures and she has them wear baggy clothes to not cause boys to stumble. Anyways I have two sons and one daughter and that message kind of bothered me. I thought my boys have to constantly reject forward young women wanting to entice them into pre marital sex and yet these you g women are looking at every young man as a threat. It couldn’t be farther from the truth in my house!! Anyways I just really appreciate this video and the possibility that it may give some a little different thought train to ponder over !! Keep up the good work!!

The part about how women should dress modestly not for the man, but for God... mind blown! I always tried to dress modestly thinking it was for the man, but you are right. We are doing it for God. That's our #1 reason. I didn't realize I was thinking this way till now. Doing it for the man part is sort of a secondary reason, don't know if that's the right phrase. It's still just as important but the #1 reason women, and men, dress modestly is for God.

My local church teaches that women should only wear skirts, show off shoulders, wear something above the knees… etc, I only wear skirts when I’m at church but when I’m out I wear my pants bc I don’t feel comfortable with skirts, my pants are more modest than certain skirts I see there.🙁

Purity gets a bad rap and I don't understand it at all. I came from what people call "purity culture" and I NEVER blamed women for my own shortcomings. I did, however, save myself for marriage. As did my wife.

In the book Meekness and Quietness (which is the second half of the Bible verse usually used to encourage women to dress modestly), it points out that in Exodus 33:4,5 the Israelites wore ornaments and only removed them because they were in rebellion at that time.
