Ok, the reason why Mettaton remembers what he is fighting for when you used the mystery key is actually pretty interesting. I don’t know everything but I will share what I know. If you go to Napstablook’s ‘pathetic’ house, there will be a locked house beside his house every run in plain sight. But, if you buy the mystery key from Catty and Bratty, you will be able to unlock that house. It contains 6 diaries and some other furniture. You can’t interact with the furniture but only the diaries. Here are the diary entries 1. Dear Diary: Shyren's sister "fell down" recently. It's sad. Without her sister to speak for her... she's become more reclusive than ever. So I reached out to her, and told her... that she, Blooky, and I should all perform together sometime. She seemed to like that idea. 2. Dearer Diary: I like to buy a new diary for every entry I make. I love to collect diaries. 3. Dearest Diary: Our cousin left the farm to become a training dummy. That leaves just Blooky and I. Blooky asked me if I was going to try to become corporeal, too. They sounded so... resigned... come on, Blooky. You know I'd never leave you behind. And besides... So in fact, Mettaton, Napstablook and the mad dummy were all cousins and they would work on the snail farm in waterfall in the past. But maybe, when Napstablook saw you battling the mad dummy, he realised that that was his cousin and started to cry, flying down to meet him, but accidentally chased him away why his magic tears. I know that this is a meme video, but I want to share this with the people who don’t know about this. If you have read the whole comment, thank you. I mean technically Chara isn't completely innocent; considering that if you try to abort the geno route in Waterfall by walking towards the final bridge before killing all of the monsters, they will specifically stop you and tell you to go back before progressing. But at a baseline level, you're still correct. The player _is_ responsible for starting the run, and is ultimately the true villain, I just don't think it's fair to excuse every bad thing Chara says and does in that timeline because of that. Edit: I forgot to mention that the example I provided doesn't work if you don't believe in narachara theory. Granted, the narrator _not_ being Chara creates more plotholes than it fills; but I don't think I should've just assumed that everyone would agree with narachara being canon. That being said, I still don't believe that just because you did most of the work means that Chara shouldn't be held responsible for the few things they _did_ do on their own (in the geno timeline, of course, pacifist timeline Chara _is_ innocent not counting their plan).

It *wasn't* fully Asriel because boi was genuinely going insane from going through the same story time and time again; the player could just go play a different game when they got bored.
