Over the past three decades South Africa has witnessed a remarkable rise of Afrikaners in business superseding the local market and rising to international success. Among them are Koos Bekker and the dominance of the Naspers global consumer internet group, Johann Rupert’s extension of Richemont’s share internationally in the luxury goods market, and Christo Wiese and Whitey Basson’s work with Pepko and Shoprite resulting in Africa’s biggest clothing and food retailers.
In his latest book, Fortunes, author Ebbe Dommisse dives into the details of how these and other business leaders have built their empires. And how in some cases, such as Steinhoff International’s Markus Jooste, the fortunes have been destroyed.

The facilitator/presenter is very open minded and her questions are unbiast. This is what true journalism is about for me, next level, new journalism, this is what the young people need albeit white, black or coloured . Thank you ,

This is an opportunity, that our black tenderpreneours and BEE beneficiaries, lost. Instead of building business empires, they chose bling life and become chairpersons of companies that they did not built.

even being chairpersons, that was part of what BEE wanted, mainly for them to learn skills and apply to other companies,, but they just chowed money and forgot everything else

This paid praise-signing author infuriates me. I’m very pleased with how our journalist here took the glowing sheen off this clearly one sided account given in this book about our amazing Super Afrikaner Tycoons! These tycoons were people who built and benefited off the foundation of an unjust, criminal system, aided and supported by Apartheid laws and legislation, benefiting from systematic dispossession of the majority of our people of their wealth (land, property even taking personal possessions!). “Where are the coloured Afrikaner tycoons?”…Can’t answer. Dodging Because it’s clear the whole thing succeeded based on racial exclusivity and access! With so much support and pampering, I’m surprised there aren’t more Afrikaner tycoons taking on the international scene…(maybe not so special after all when you don’t get given never-ending leg ups). And they come back as Superheroes to save the day for poor, uncivilised South Africans, to “bank the poor”, decimating spaza shops (African businesses) by muscling in the corporate supermarkets into the townships; and the so called Ultra-Farmers were leveraging native peoples land - they used that stolen land as collateral to raise money to put in the much-praised technology, and got access to global farming standards- to learn how to farm well (nothing “special” here…Check who taught them to farm African soil in 1652). Please give us a break Eberhard. There’s no magic here. This whitewash hogwash of painting a sheen on the proceeds of criminality is old…outdated and only the most unread or unrepentant in our society still believe there’s praise due here. These men were competing with a people with their hands tied behind their backs, with guns to their heads…paid with cheap wine (or not paid at all on some farms, to this day) and slave wages!. And that system is still another 50years more to unravel!
