My problem with Daima is, with OG Dragon Ball being my favorite anime, Daima's Goku doesn't really seem like kid Goku to me. OG kid Goku was oblivious, curious, and appearence-wise he was stumpy too. I'm not saying Daima Goku has to be these things cause he is adult Goku in a kid's body, but the show doesn't make him feel like adult Goku either, what with the lame poop jokes he makes or the increased sense of wonder (which he usually reserves to fighting new enemies and not exploring new places). Basically he seems like a blank shonen protag now, because any shonen protagonist can express themselves like Goku does in Daima (always being hungry, taking enemies head on, discovering new lands). I'm not too sure how they could make him feel more like himself to me, maybe have him take things more seriously or give him more interactions to show off his character more. But I know the point of this show's to have a wide-eyed shonen protag explore and fight, so the show's fine for what it is.

I was saying the same thing. (Well,kinda). To me,Goku was the ONLY ONE who got turned into a kid. Everyone else (besides Trunks and Goten) is still an adult......they just got CHIBI'ed. Everyone else still behaves like they're adults.......except Goku. He only acts "adult-ish" when he's a super saiyan. Daima's kid Goku is different than both the original and GT's. In GT,at least he still acted like an adult. In OG Dragon Ball,although he was learning things for the first time,he didn't have this over-exaggerated sense of awe and wonder about everything. Dragon Ball does this thing where it resets every so 10 years to attract a new,younger audience. It's not made for people in their late 30s....40s or 50s....so I can't knock the show. They tossed a nugget of Z off in there,by re-animating some Buu fights for the older crowd,but if anyone thinks that made the show for them,they're going to be sorely mistaken.

I don't entirely agree with the notion of there being no unique ideas to GT. I think Baby as an antagonist and what he did was fairly interesting for Dragonball Z. I thought bringing back the Oozaru form in some way was a good idea. And the concept of the Evil Dragons was probably the best idea for a villain that the series had (at least as far as Z/GT/Super is concerned). The problem was in execution. Outside of the concept stages, their creative choices and the writing sucked. TBH GT is far more comparable to Super. Outside of the first arc, the series very quickly reverted back to Dragonball Z's type of storytelling. And thus it's a lot more similar to Super. And compared to Super... the ideas actually presented by GT are FAR more interesting. Again, execution was lacking but... in terms of creativity I think it's certainly in favor of GT over Super.
@PeerlessInterests

Saying GT has no unique ideas is EXTREMELY disingenuous when Super snatches a majority of those ideas. From something as minor as Granloah's appearance to entire villains and power up rituals.

@@JamesMJaime Baby and Hatchiyak's only similarity is that they're Tuffle creations. One was a computer and another was a machine mutant. That's like saying Android 17 is the same as Cell because they were both made by Dr Gero. That's like saying Goku and Vegeta are copies because they're both Saiyan's. Better yet, Android 21 is the same as Android 19. Cell Max is the same as Gamma 1 because Hedo made them.

@@Keisezrgs Not to mention different creators, different background, widely different powers. Baby still has memories of Planet Plant due to basically being the King Tuffle. Hatchiyak is completely a computer given form due to Hatred who summons ghosts. Their similarities begin with their hatred of the Saiyans and end at being Tuffle made. Frieza and Baby may as well be cousins just because they hate Saiyan's if we go by James' logic.

I always figured the best way to deal with the rot of powerscaling dragonball was forced into was to force Goku and all into an environment where their usual shtick just doesn't work. By forcing them to recontextualize fights and simultaneously reducing the power cieling dramatically you can have way more creative storytelling again and it seems that Toriyama had a similar thought with Daima.

Dude, there is nothing "dragon ball" about DAIMA. It is a try-hard way of getting there, but it feels much more childish. And not only because they turned the characters into toddlers for no logical reason. GT did some things wrong - like ignoring the power scale - but the storyline was much deeper and serious (like DB). And Goku turned into a kid (not a toddler) for a logical and goofy reason, that is pilaf reminiscing out loud of the old times when Goku was young, and the dragon saying "ok".

Except that Goku did not get weaker at all in GT when reverting to a child. It is stated multiple times throughout the show and outside sources, like the Perfect files, that he was still as strong as he was as an adult. It was just "unstable." The only things he struggled to do really was use his instant transmission, and his SSJ3 was harder to maintain, that's it. It made him turning into a child completely pointless as there were no true repercussions to it as he was effectively the same as he was as an adult.

I like daima so far but I don’t think it’s as dragon ball as people might think. It has a goofier tone in general but if you really think about it they don’t really get into that many goofy or creative situations or characters (the cup game and the Minotaur is the only stuff I’m really remembering rn). Mostly just normal trouble and dealing with generic low level guys like bandits and police. Feels like they just toned down the stakes in the fighting and didn’t add as much creativity as they could’ve so it’s a lil of the worst of both worlds. I will say the world building is pretty interesting and I feel like the most actually thought out of most if not all of the dragon ball shows. Even though the new lore (ep 10-11) is it pretty confusing when considering super lore I also don’t care for the fact that the gang turning into kids really doesn’t matter. They make a big point of the fact that they want turn into adults again to make it easier to get dende back but there’s no real practical effect in the show. They make a big deal of the loss of control of their flight thing early but that’s quickly forgotten so it just felt like an excuse for goku to get his power pole. And he didn’t seem to really get a power downgrade either seeing as he’s still easily able to deal with everyone. And when he did face a challenge with the robot he didn’t struggle to turn super Saiyan or anything either

I think you’ve really shined a light on this. A lot of the applies to the webcomic Dragon Ball Multiverse comic, from before Super’s Tournament of Power or Dragon Ball Heroes. “What if Vegeta and Goku never unfused” and similar what-if ideas interacting on a single stage. With flashbacks and emotional drama, akin to Buu saga’s Goku and Vegeta, or Future Trunks’ story.
@gridenboat
@gridenboat Ай бұрын
"What if Vegeto stayed fused?" is one of the least interesting theories from MasakoX, along with "What if Goku turned Super Saiyana as a kid." It's just a nonstop cycle of "Oh, he beat this guy easily" or "Oh, he beat this guy quickly." The most important thing I like about the story in the first place is the characterization of otherwise obscure characters and how he can put them into meaningful settings. So when it just turns into boringly "describing how easy this fight is," it becomes way less interesting. (I know you weren't specifically talking about MasakoX; I just wanted to rant, lol.)😮

IDK if it's because i saw the DB series canonically, from OG DB, Z to super that i see Daima and get this nostalgic feeling, because that is what OG DB felt like, it was fun, Yes Goku was strong AF, and we knew he will solve things if things get tough, but we also know he will get in trouble being naive and thinking everybody is as pure and loving as his grandfather Gohan. And you knew he will fail on that department. it's why Bulma was a great comrade as she as a city girl didn't take sh1t from anyone, it was Bulma who drive the plot forward and Goku only did what she couldn't, fight. I have been rewatching Dragon Ball lately and I had an absolute blast. The humor and characters are so entertaining and each episode feels organic in how it's written to this day. Then when I was nearing the end of the Piccolo Jr. saga I really started to feel the fatigue of the new "formula" the series was heading towards back then and it only worsened with Saiyan Saga and beyond. It honestly felt boring to me a lot of times, even if there was currently some action happening in the episode. Everything in the story has become so serious. No more it was about the adventure or becoming a better martial artist - it was primarly about defeating the current big bad guy and then waiting for the next one to show up. I still very much enjoy some of the iconic moments, animation (Studio Junio FTW!) and music, but as I get older I really appreciate the original series more even if I watched Z first.

I mean shoot, the reason why the Baby and Syn Shenron arcs are considered the best parts of the series was because they examined parts of Z that fans had wanted some kind of conclusion to (the final resolution to Vegeta being used a conduit for the villains of the series, similar to Zero from Mega Man X, and the usage of the Fusion Dance for the adults). And, GT also didn’t stoop to using the same logic of making Goku Jr. a replica of the original by having him go through a similar arc, they took the much better Gohan approach of showing what a Goku who hadn’t truly learned to fight from the beginning would do in the scenario of being shown that he DOES has the power to protect the people that he cares about.

my main problem with Daima (and any other project they might try to squeeze out) is that they keep shoving stuff in the gap between the end of the buu arc and the end of Z episode. it's a widespread issue with prequels in general, the more you stay in a time window the more you are forced to end things in a certain way. They already retconned stuff that happened in Super (won't spoil what) but, unless they use Daima to re-start Super as a whole and make a SINGLE continuity, they'll always have the "wait, if threat X was so dangerous, why didn't Beerus show up?" or "Why isn't Shin worried about getting himself into danger if he is tied to the God of Destruction?". This was already a huge problem with Super and it completely destroyed any sense of urgency or threat in that show. The more they stay in that 10 year window the harder it will be for them to make things interesting. Why? Because WE ALREADY KNOW HOW IT ENDS. "Oh no! if we lose this tournament our universe will be deleted!" Well, end of Z still has to happen and everyone was fine and dandy there, so....

While Dragon Ball was the closest to what Toriyama ever wanted out of his series, I'm still curious as to what it would've looked like had the necessities of keeping Dragon Ball popular not been a factor. What would Dragon Ball be today had the action and marketing not been the driving force? Toriyama came back after Dragonball Evolution (so I'm told) because he hated it. But the series didn't seem to change all that much when he came back, so I can't help but wonder what it is he particularly hated about that movie (aside from its overall lifelessness) and what his complete, ideal form of Dragon Ball would be.

Daima isn't trying to be that, it has its own pace, formula, characters, and even lore; so even if it's based on DB/DBZ, sharing things like world, characters and other elements, I still consider it its own thing, just a fun, short adventure, with some flaws here and there, as every other DB production, but frankly very entertaining.

For all of GT's faults, they made Goku show the confidence and composure of a Goku who's been around the block. -Daima Goku is an adult in a child/chibi body...who for some reason is back to acting like a child every time he's not Super Siayan. And it's made even more ridiculous bc everyone else who was chibified still acts like an adult, except him. It makes no sense. I mean, it does make sense since the point is obviously to cater to the new young audience who likes the protagonist to act like a child full of wonder too, but it makes no sense for the story and the continuity of this 40 year old franchise.

I was hyper cynical about Daima when I first heard about it. My friends and I would call it Dragon Babies or GT2. After watching it I gotta say it is a lot better GT and Super (Personally I HATE Super, hadn't watches heroes but that seems like Super but worse) The fights actually have more choreography to them than we've gotten since Z. It still does the blur line wooshes but they are actually putting some slick moves in there as well. That one shot of Goku sliding between the dudes legs was slick just to site and example.

@streptococo4735 Its got some love put into it, but it's still a show that struggles to do new things, trying to recapture a lost spirit through a few episodes of poorly paced adventure then defaulting to nostalgia and action in order to try and gain back a viewer base. It has a whole arc built around bringing back old movie and show villains for cameos. It does a whole mini arc that takes from Oolong's original episode. It throws away its new characters like Uub and Adult Trunks in favor of continuing to just throw Goku at the problem. I'm not denying the quality of it's ending, but it's still a story that primarily banks on nostalgia. Definitely not denying that super doesn't do the same, if not worse. I just think saying GT has soul and Super doesn't is simply an argument primarily based on nostalgia for an older show.
@_DatDaft_
@_DatDaft_ Ай бұрын
@@Pokemonleafmon id respectfully have to disagree, GT does have a soul. Sure it’s taken a few elements from old Sagas and Movies (which ain’t new, as Daima and especially Super do the same), but a lot of the Sagas (to an extent, not the Black Star or Super 17 Saga) have a lotta passion, thought and love put into them, the Baby Saga is full of old lore from Z reused in good ways, with a cool compelling Villain, the Shadow Dragon Saga has a few problems here and there, more so because of Budget cuts as GT was cancelled at that point, but the fact they made the final Saga about the DragonBalls and the consequences of using them too much, is a perfect ending to DB as a whole, especially when the Shadow Dragons where born from some of the major wishes that happened throughout DB and DBZ, with the Ending being a good send off for DB as a whole. Overlooking Sagas, GT actually understands its characters, GT Goku acts the way Goku realistically should 5 - 10 years after End of Z, same goes for GT Vegeta, GT Gohan, ect, though the biggest issue GT has is that it wants to focus more on Goku and leave others like Vegeta or Gohan out on the sideline, but that doesn’t necessarily take away how these characters feel like the complete version of themselves (though be it, I’m still salty at the fact that Majuub was waisted, and we could’ve gotten a SSJ3 GT Vegeta, because Super Baby 2 was a SSJ3...😔, hopefully they do a soft remake of GT one day, but they might just ruin it, because DB now has already shown they can’t get GT Vegeta right) And GT does a few other good things here and there, like SSJ4, the designs, the Music, ect, id say GT has a soul, just a few problems here and there, with a majority of its problems being brought over to Super and Daima, or ether being exaggerated by Fans (like how GT Vegeta got SSJ4)

So I consider myself a long time fan, I've watched literally all of DB(GT and Heroes Included+Kai) and even read fan mangas With that being said, I take big issue with people trying to compare Daima to OG DB when they are just not the same, other than they are both adventure style animes OG DB was about adventure, but it was done with characters that hadn't been established/fleshed out, we didnt know why Goku was so strong or why he could tank bullets which made him interesting and added a bit of mystery, Goku was also just a kid experiencing the world so when he didnt know things it made sense, because he's in the process of learning which makes it fun to watch since it usually leads to comedic moments that felt genuine and not forced, it also wasnt made strictly for kids infact I dont think anyone under like 14 should be reading/watching OG DB cause it can get pretty creepy with Master Roshi lol whereas DBZ/DBS/DBGT is fine for all ages, OG DB had powerscaling, but it mostly felt like Goku had earned his new strength and wasnt just handed a powerup, Goku also had to rely more on actual techniques rather than pure strength to beat some of his opponents, there's also way less blasts thrown out and they are more significant when used since the fights were mostly hand to hand combat DB Daima is strictly a kids show, it's made for kids and that's why they chose the chibi look so it would feel relatable to kids, not to mention it isnt canon and wont be unless they literally decide to retcon DBS even more I would rather watch all of Heroes again than watch another episode of this cheap spin off that adds nothing to DB other than more "Goku's a fucking idiot" moments instead of a literal martial arts master who has access to God ki, like Goku is a literal grandparent and they have him acting more childish/ignorant than his kid self at times, I miss Buu saga Goku's personality where he'd have jokes here and there, but knew when to get serious Daima should have been DBS Goten and Trunks' adventure as it would have gave them a chance to shine, like imagine that most of the Z fighters get turned into kids AND HAVE NO POWER AT ALL, so they are only as strong as an actual child and even weaker than Kid Goku at his weakest, DBS Goten and Trunks have to step up to return them back to normal, but have the antagonist steal the DBs and spread them through out the demon world so now Goten and Trunks' have to search for them in a world they've never been to and forced to learn to become better fighters, THAT would have been interesting to watch even if it wasnt canon cause we'd get to see chars fight that usually dont or dont get much of it plus flesh them out a bit more since those 2 desperately need some char development I will give credit to Daima for their animation, but that's all they got going for them, everything else is mid at best

While I have kind of enjoyed Daima, it really brings the addage "You can never go home again" to my mind every time I see it. The world, and Toriyama himself (RIP), have changed so much in 30 years that the spirit of the original Dragon Ball can never really be recaptured. There was always this playful edginess to the original, what with all the casual violence, sex jokes, and just general crudeness to it all. You can see it in a lot of Toriyama's works from around that time period, especially with something like Go Go Ackman. GT tried to recapture that aspect too, but didn't know how, which I think is why you end up with all the offputting Pan scenes... "This is what THOSE PEOPLE like", as you said, was probably their thought process. I also admit I don't really like that idea of turning the characters into kids again to begin with. It seems like a very surface-level way of trying to recapture the original DB, when really Goku and Krillin were the only kids at the time. The core premise is going to immediately be unappealing to a lot of people, so I think that's why it also has an uphill battle.

Same here. Not to knock the dub community, but I saw someone describe the phenomenon as too many people in this fanbase are dee bee zee fans and not dragon ball fans. To them the story starts with raditz ends with majin buu and super is the greatest thing ever because it caters to their need for constant power escalation and seeing their faves kick butt and get new forms. To me dragon ball is about the adventure and the wacky things toriyama can come with along the way and how he creatively stumbles his way from point a to point b. Fights can happen during that time but it's not the end all be all of the appeal. Unfortunately to most fans, tho fights, and who can beat who is what dragon ball is about

When we have a slow hotel episode, I can't shake the feeling of "OH GOD WE ONLY HAVE 11 EPISODES LEFT TO WRAP IT UP", while I probably would have loved its change of pace in Super or GT. In all of DB history, episode economy has never really been an issue(to me). That's not even really a fault of Daima's, but that doesn't stop me from subconsciously judging it with a certain lens that can sometimes sour the experience a little.

No, the real issue, the elephant in the room, it's aimed for preschoolers, and it's another rehashing of Z content with The Majin material, and the GT plot device, but made worse since the entire cast are de-aged. Yet again, the post 90s Dragon Ball just recycles everything from the 80s-90s Dragon Ball, they can't just do anything new and thrilling. I feel the producers just go out of their way to make it as derivative and bad as possible, since they know the audience have no standards and will consume anything.

I think the issue is that (to be frank here) most "Dragon Ball" franchise fans are Z and Super fans, that is people want the big shounen man to do a big power up and do a massive punch and beat the villain. Daima (from what I've seen and heard, not watched since I'm a dub person) is a callback to OG DB in terms of tone, its Toriyama at his most Toriyama-ist. It's comedic, lighthearted, adventurous, and thats everything Z fans just don't care for at all. A lot of people just aren't that interested in it for that reason I think, hell I think a lot of people haven't even really watched Dragon Ball. Hoping it does well enough despite this though, but I wonder how much of an audience it really has.

Daima has definitely been marketed, but I think it's also fair to say that they've marketed it wrong by mainly focusing on tie ins to games and such. Take Daima Goku in XV2, he only dropped like a month ago and Daima had barely started then, so he doesn't actually have a bunch of properly unique moves and thus feels a bit like a rip off because the devs had no real reference for him unless they were using Goku from DB. A lot of players have complained about him feeling just kinda bland. Compare that with how long fans had to wait for anything relating to solid news about Daima, and in the west even Superhero before that was a bitch to find actual info on. To fans like me at least it feels like a very weird and huge step back from how well integrated the global fanbase was accounted for in Broly's marketing which in itself was a response to how badly the Super launch was handled. I'm actually enjoying Daima personally, I'm not caught up but I just watch it a few episodes at a time and it's pretty fun and solid, to the point it just confuses me even more that they didn't market it better. It's not perfect but it's a very good middle ground between DB and Z.

I think what really sells Daima for me is that from episode one, it felt like there was substantial lore being provided to us. From learning what demons are, their situation, the Majins and Namekians and why they are what they are, and even why some wishes dragonballs can't grant while others they can. All while still feeling like an organic and understandable part of the story. Toriyama went back to things he never explained in the Buu saga, like Dabura's deal and what Buu even is, and gave satisfying answers that has built upon what we already know without tearing anything down. GT felt like a bunch of silly busywork that didn't really tell us anything and felt hackneyed, while Daima's info and lore serves a perpose that helps elevate the lore of the rest of the series.

They work on limiting themselves and using real martial arts techniques instead of power level battles. Then you ALSO have Dragonball: The Next Step where Goten, Dende, Trunks and Pan go on fun adventures (and High school drama) as the next group of Earth's heroes. And for your Power Level fans you just have a series about Vegeta mopping up other threats across the universe.

So I know this is a Dragonball video and I like it but I just wanna say that ever since your Villains video, I've been hoping to hear what you have to say about Michael Corleone. Villains is actually one of my favorite videos ever. Really makes me think.

I like Daima enough in terms of explaining things, but to my knowledge even OG Dragonball was never really lore heavy there was lots of different set pieces the gang travelled to but things weren't really all that fleshed out like whats trying to be done in Daima. In Daima it seems they are trying to tackle fleshing out the universe they set up which they never really tried prior (much like OG Dragonball, Z just kind of has set pieces with few explanations). As for tackling power scaling I don't even think that they had to make the characters, they could've just made it such that ki doesn't work the same in demon world and its really only magic that counts, therein goku and co would only be able to rely on their base fighting skills and strength and maybe have to learn maybe some magic.

Daima’s pacing is a bit clunky and the exposition could be integrated more naturally. Overall, though, I’ve really been enjoying the show! It feels like a natural continuation of the story post Buu and it’s been really nice to see Kaioshin get some shine after being overlooked for so long. It’s nice to have a plot that isn’t entirely focused around power escalation. We’ll see if Daima sticks the landing, but I’m happy with what we’ve gotten so far!

I think these points are what makes Battle of Gods and Super hero easily the best of the DB movies in tone of the series. Theyre fun, good romps with silly characters in silly situations, featuring awesome fights
