Great answer Catherine,. As you said , we all look forward to glimpses into your life, each week. We feel that you are in our home and that we know you as our friend. However, each vlog is only 35 min long, (lve heard that it takes 8-20 hours of editing work.) that leaves the rest of the week that we know nothing about. Keep your private life private. Take care of yourself and do what you enjoy or have to, in order to live comfortably. Your health is very important both mental and physical. Big hugs from the granny with a work bench in Melbourne

Oh lovely Geoff Hamilton. I used to watch him when I was a young mum and it was him that got me into gardening. I’m 73 now and still loving my garden. Love watching you as you’re into all the things I’ve enjoyed in my life and still enjoying now. Love my gardening and I run a Craft group in my local area. X

I'm just going to pause the video for a minute to say you have some very good insight into the job of a creator. I have a very small KZbin channel on quilting, but I've never tried to make a job of it bc it's hard to come up with ideas and it's so time-consuming to make and edit videos. So I appreciate what you do!

I think you answered the question well, a lot of videos on here are filmed and edited in a 'romanticising your life' kind of way so that it's relaxing to watch. I must admit though that now I've started filming vlogs myself I see them differently, every time the camera angle changes or someone walks to a different room, I know how much effort they've gone to and it's no longer relaxing haha 😂

I love your desk and the nook. To clean your desk use 2 parts linseed oil, 2 parts turpentine and 1 part methylated spirit - the spirits clean the wood and the oil feeds it. Use 0000 fine steel wool to apply the mix and clean off with a rag.

The curtains are gorgeous but yes, I do get a "trousers too short" feeling. I find curtains that are slightly touching the floor or are even a tad longer give a very cosy and luxurious feeling. No scarecety. :-) Love your work!!

First I went on a journey with Mr Carrington… and now Dainty Diaries. Catherine I decided last year that any furniture needed would be wood furniture. I like something solid that will last forever and will be statement pieces, and something that will deserve a space in my home. Today’s furniture it’s no longer made the same way… I need quality 😝. It’s just plain beautiful. 😻 Thank you for the thrifting. 🎉🎉 Edit- I would be dangerously inclined to take it all 😅😅. Just soooooo gorgeous.

OMG We have similar writing desks. 😊 My desk has drawers just on 1 side though. I would prefer if it was on both. It's a family heirloom so it has extra screws to hold the top and the roll top doesn't lock anymore but I Love it. I can still close it that is my favorite thing about it. Hide the "stuff". I inherited an oak rolltop desk very similar to the one you purchased. An elderly friend left it to me. It is from mid-1800s and belonged to a bank president. It was sold to my friend's father during American Great Depression in 1929 because a run on the bank caused it to close. There is a secret locking mechanism in the back of the first top drawer so once rolltop is shut, all the drawers are locked too. . There is a slot in the side of desk and it was used when desk was locked. If deposit/payment checks came in after banker had left...the teller dropped envelopes with checks inside into the desk slot, so banker could process deposits/payments early next morning. I love finding antique furniture...always looking for little hiding parts in these wonderfull crafted pieces too. You might want to build a little secret compartment in your desk! Sometimes it is a false drawer bottom that can be pulled up by a sliver of string or ribbon thumbtacked to hidden side of false drawer bottom. Other ideas are a butterfly hinged opening in back of drawer as a hidden cubby hole slot. OR a square back leg that has a hinged side where you hide a roll of money or precious jewelry lol! Love the intrigue of it all. My grandmother left me a Victorian marble top parlor table...it had a hidden shelf and I kept a handgun there while living alone in a rather dangerous part of the city. It sat in my apartment entrance hall with a vase of flowers on it lol...lovely, but not fragile girly ....that' decribes my table...and ME lol! (P.S. you could let your litlle niece leave "secret notes" to the fairies in a desk cubbyhole with a secret "fairy door"...and let her find a tiny trinket, minature dollhouse china cup or silver tray, etc when she looks to see if the fairies responded to her lovely note, picture etc.

I look forward to seeing the furniture piece you had delivered, how you repair and especially to see how the fur babies like sitting on it to look out the window. As for the response you gave about creators seeming seamless, you did such a good job explaining that topic from your own perspective especially showing how when things don't go as planned you just make it work like when you got the other roses for your job on tv even though what you planned went wonky. That is definitely a wonderful example of turning lemons into lemonade. We creators all have different reasons for creating, I started out just to document my journey to share with family and friends, that is still what I do and if anyone else wants to follow along that is fun and I welcome that.

I started refinishing and repairing antiques with my mother when I was 12. So it’s been many moons. I suggest that you use clamps to pull the wood together. After a dry fit you can use glue to secure it and use metal flat brackets for extra support underneath. Just make sure your screws are short and won’t pop through. It is a beautiful piece. Charming just like you. 💚

Geoff Hamilton would have been a favourite of yours, whereas most gardeners buy things he would try and make them. he created lots of small gardens with a theme, for example a cottage Garden but they were all individual and fenced off. You can still see them at Barnsdale in Rutland, which is near where I live and it's worth a visit if ever you come to England. Do watch some of his old videos If you ever get time, he was so inventive, and his passion for gardening was catching!

Me and my husband had just bought our first house with a massive garden we had an allotment that backed onto it… the only thing was I knew nothing about gardening and Derek could only grow vegetables 😅 Geoff Hamilton was our oracle 50 years later I still quote him to myself… my favourite one being if you walk on your border and you walk off two inches taller it’s too wet to garden so go in the shed and sort out your seeds… sadly I’ve been a widow for over 17 years my girls are both married and I have 8 grandsons so I just potter in my much smaller garden and have to ask for help more than I want to… any way a long way of saying trust Geoff he won’t let you down 😀

Aw, Geoff Hamilton was my era - he was such a lovely man. I think you would have enjoyed his style. He was a proper thrifty gardener and was always making something out of nothing. Beehive compost bins, cold frames out of old windows and (my favourite) obelisks from battens and a toilet cistern ballcock! I recommend his cottage garden series if you can get hold of an old dvd or book. I still refer to his books now. He was taken too soon sadly 😢

I especialy remember he made a path with roof tiles on their side, for that cottage pathway and then sown poppies in between, to get that look it's always been there and poppies reseeded themselves, that stayed with me forever. I'm not sure when you were born, but he did mi 90's somewhere ;-)

I knew you had bought that desk! It's going to be great to do your morning work on. You won't see the length of the curtains once your desk is there. Don't worry I'm sure everyone knows you are a great cat mom, but yes, us cat people are neurotic when it comes to things that are toxic to cats because it seems almost everything is to them which is frustrating as I used to be a florist and love fresh flowers in my home. Sadly my friend's cat died from eating a lily.

Your desk is lovely, really nice wood, I imagine it'll be a wonderful sunny spot to work from. When you say...shutters, are they folding, just wondering how that's going to work with the desk being higher than the sill.? I've used eBay to check out antiques, those people always have good info about what they're selling. Love all you share with cats, diy and gardening. I think some people share way more than what I need to know about their life.

Recently I saw where a piece of furniture had a split in it and the guy repaired it by putting quite a few thin slices of wood and wood glue into it instead of using filler. He made sure the slices stood proud of the surface, so he was able to trim them down once the glue had dried. He stacked them upright next to one another rather than using just one large 'block' if you can understand what I mean😆 stacked vertically not horizontally. Looked really good when finished. Flippin' 'eck I made hard work of that explanation🤣 thought maybe it could help you repair your new roll top desk.

Aaah it's starting to take shape, I can't wait 😊 I am with you about the "no wiggle" room with the curtains pole. Our windows are full lenght, from the floor to the ceiling, and and the only curtain rails that fit are the most unsightly simple ones from ikea, that you actually attach to the ceiling 😢 the brighter mornings and later evenings are giving me life. I cleaned up my balcony today, and allready have list what plants I would like to try this year. As a seasoned dahlia grower, can you tell me Catherine, can I grow dahlias in window boxes? If not, what plants with some height and foliage would you recommend for window boxes? Thanks so much 🫶

Geoff was my favourite garderning presenter and i was so sad when he died- i was mad keen gardening at that time like you ae now. The only gardening books ive kept after a massive declutter are his and Beth Chatto. Catherine you would Love Beth Chattos ' a gardeners notebook ' about a year in her life with her beautiful garden and nursery at Elmstead Market. I met her there in 1992 and she was just wonderful.

So fun… thrifting, garden shop, kittens and bit of garden shots, love it ❤. The fluffed up roses in pots so beautiful! I can’t wait to see how your nook will turn out once the desk is there.😊

The little nook is going to look so nice with your new desk, which is awesome by the way! I love your “can do” attitude. I like to pool my curtains, partly because the cat goes behind them and makes himself a bed! 😂 Those cats of yours are just lovely to watch. Keep your private life private Catherine if that’s what’s best for you, we won’t go away because we don’t get every little detail. You just go girl! ❤

Hey guys, Catherine is amazing and I love her videos. So please stop frustrating her with ridiculous comments! Stop being correction culture. Let people live and be happy. We don’t want to lose one of our favorite creators because they got worn out from ridiculous commenters. Let’s all stop assuming that she knows nothing about life. We’re watching her videos because she knows a lot about life and we enjoy her commentary on it. Thank you I will step off my soapbox now. 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷

Great work, Catherine, definitely looks "finished" wallpapered under the window 👍 I like the length of the curtains to the top of the skirting board 😊 Loved the way you fluffed up the roses 🌹 Gorgeous writing desk 😍 looking forward to seeing you work on it.

Don't worry about the curtains being a few inches short because the desk will be in front of them. But if the length makes you a bit crazy, you can lower the hem. I am looking forward to the desk makeover! Have a great weekend, xoxo's Sandie

My cat Satchmo loved eating plants, but he carefully sniffed each one of them before chomping into them. He somehow knew which ones he could eat. I checked, he was right. He lived until he was 18. Cats are smarter than people think.

The desk will be lovely in the nook. I believe that you will be able to fix it and make it more beautiful. Old furniture with its flaws is beautiful. Joe Swift has a you tube channel documenting his new garden. He mentioned filming for the new GW season, yay, it's almost here again. Thank you for this video girl!

The length of the curtains would drive me nuts 😅 But, they won’t be seen once your desk is in. Also, if you’re bothered by them, you could add another fabric to lengthen them. A second-hand lace tablecloth or similar could add a lovely detail to the bottom few missing inches.

If you really don't like the length of the curtains Catherine you could sew some lace on the bottom so they touch the floor. Can't wait to see the desk in situ, it's beautiful xx

I'm really surprised you didn't measure the cubby desk space prior to going thrifting. Just dropping ole' Geoff on the floor! ha ha ha The drapes, I think the length is alright, the bottom is mostly covered by the desk anyways, not that much visible. The desk - can see where it will be a lovely piece, I've always loved antique roll top desks, just love all the cubbies, nooks & crannies!

My parents had a desk like this. Circa 1950 oak. Weighs a ton? Was beautiful. Ask your wood working teacher about the split top repair. Borrow some long clamps. Wallpaper is beautiful. Thanks for the thrift shopping and garden center trip. Have a good weekend.
