I think that you DO know when to stop. This tray is not craft or a DIY project. It's art. And, it's simply beautiful. Here's some old lady tips when it comes to distressing: I started painting and distressing furniture in the 90s, and what I concentrated on was distressing where a piece would naturally be scratched, rubbed, held, and repeatedly used. When I distressed a table top, I scraped and marred it with the bottom of a ceramic bowl, but not everywhere, only where a bowl would have made contact with the table top during a meal. Also, along the edges, you only need to distress the corners and where each person would sit at the table, not the entire circumference or edge. Chairs will always be distressed on the seat, the rungs in the front where people put their feet/shoes when sitting (usually the most distressed place on any chair), on the arms of the chair only where it would have gotten worn from people's hands and metal buttons on a jacket sleeve, and the back of the chair where buckles on the back of a coat or jacket might have scraped the paint. Distress the legs where chairs may have repeatedly been knocked into them as people pushed their chair back in place when they left the table, and the cross braces where, again, people would have rested their feet, but only in the places right under where people sat. On a tray, the wear and tear would be on the handles, the tray itself where cups, plates, and cutlery would have worn it, and the bottom underneath where the tray would come in contact with a kitchen counter or table top. The handles of a wood tray would have been worn down much more than the rest of the tray, and would come to be smooth, when the rest of the tray edges would not. Sharp corners also become smoother than the straight edges.. The best way to determine where a piece might get scuffed is to visit antique shops and observe older pieces that have real distressing from decades of use. You'll be able to hone your already observant and artistic eye to determine where to distress your pieces. Before you distress a table, sit at it. Before you distress a tray, use it. Before you distress a chair, sit in it, and so forth. That said, your distressing is quite good and you are thoughtful when you do it. For instance, I noticed that you knew that the piece needed to have gold added, because "why would someone keep a worn piece unless it had been something special before it became worn." That is artistry and forethought. I'm glad I found your channel today. I learned some new techniques and I absolutely loved the coloring you used with the soft pastels. Brilliant! Subscribed and looking forward to seeing more of your creations.
