20年以上派手なエフェクトに高い難易度で有名になったギルティギアは、5年ぶりの「Guilty Gear -Strive-」という名の新作を迎えました。
今回、シリーズの生みの親である石渡太輔氏に本作に込めた思いに加え、格闘ゲームにおけるクリエイティブの立ち位置、そして今後の動向についてお話をお伺いしました。

The Guilty Gear series stands on top of the 2D versus fighting world.
Known for its full-blown effects and its daunting difficulty spanning over 20 years, the latest addition to the series, Guilty Gear -Strive was recently released, 5 years after the previous title.
The series creator Daisuke Ishiwatari shared his approach on this title, his views on creativity in the versus fighting genre, while sharing more on his future perspectives for Arc System Works.

i'm glad to hear arc didn't fall for the "high specs" meme. I'll play good games before I play pretty games. even then, strive is the most beautiful game released in a while. i've gotten so sick of hyper-realistic graphics, they all look so similar. strive looks fresh, I love it.

You also don't need high specs to make a pretty game, before Xrd, Guilty Gear was very low budget and those games still look beautiful

"For people who were interested in the game and never got to start, we wanted to offer them the opportunity to play" As a newcomer to the series, I'd say they did pretty well. =) And there's definitely a sense of discovery. I'm slowly building an actual combo, that I mostly came up with myself, through experimentation. I've never done that in a fighting game before - it's always been look at what the pros do, and memorize it, practice it, and do it worse than they do. I don't feel the need to do that in Strive. You can really see the work the developers put into the game, it's very, very impressive. I'm looking forward to seeing how the game grows...though now I wonder what small, indie-style games from Arcsys could end up being like? I'm glad Ishiwatari-san has a lot of things he'd still like to do. Knowing he did the cinematography(?) for Strive's story mode makes me think he could make a movie that looks pretty cool. =)

Sixteen years ago I found my favourite fighting game franchise: Guilty Gear, I fell in love with its unique style (characters, music, story, etc). That part about mid-sized team games is very important to me! IMO game dev teams these days cant keep up with the level of detail necessary for a modern AAA release to be considered "next gen", this end ups creating pretty corridor games focusing mostly on graphics/spectacle instead of the gameplay fun, I am glad someone important like Daisuke understands that and is not trying to chase trends but making his own path!

I have to give him props for letting himself take control over his creations and being passionate about it. I wish these AAA companies and publishers need to be more passionate with their products than trying to make a quick dollar. One person called me crazy when I said Arc Sys is going to take over where Capcom failed, and here we are now. Capcom sold out for eSports and now they're suffering for it.

I love how euphoric all of your documentaries are.
