One of the things that strike me most about this show (as a black girl who also loves to sing) is that one part where Simone is pissed off about Daisy giving everything up right when she was like... On top of the world. Look, i also understand Daisy and you're not obligated to keep doing things just because one day you wanted it. If something doesn't make you happy anymore, quit it. Go find what does. But i understand Simone's rage and frustration so much because she spends the whole show getting the rug pulled beneath her feet and being betrayed and there is Daisy, who also went through some sh*t but MADE IT. And she was giving up on everything because she was heartbroken. It always reminds me of that thing like, how black people always have to put double the effort a white person would into something, so that they can be chosen, or rewarded or recognized. Do u guys remember that part in Alice Through the looking glass in which the Red Queen says "you have to run a lot to stay IN THE SAME PLACE. To go SOMEWHERE ELSE, you have to run twice as fast." and i never forgot that. That's what it feels like. Anyway.

Yeah, that’s a great comparison! And they do really lean into more of Billy’s psychology in the book, which I wished the did more here. Like we see in the book that Daisy’s comment about all the songs being the same aren’t just bc she can’t think love can include being happy, but that Billy is refusing to write anything sadder or darker or just including doubt bc he refuses to acknowledge that being in recovery means you’re always going to be fighting a part of yourself. His overcompensation for his own darkness thru his songs and how they were affecting the band was super interesting and I wished they’d included more of that.

Yeah, I agree with thoughts on show Billy vs book Billy. In the book he is a human who, after he gets clean, tries so hard to stay sober and to be deserving of Camilla and his family. And yet in the show, it seems they just stripped him of all his good qualities. And then still expects for us to root for him.

Covid meant all the band members had more time to spend on their singing and instrument lessons than planned which I think improved the show. They also had to attend a « band camp » where they familiarized themselves with playing together prior to the start of filming. In interviews, the cast members mention this was the opportunity they needed to build chemistry and truly start feeling like a band.

Yes. Eddie appreciated Camilla. Who stays with someone like Billy, who cheats, and loves another person even when he's "faithful." Plus it was the 70s. Having lived through them, nothing about Vietnam, drugs, Watergate? There was social change, but hard change, and all the sunny songs about love are strange. Women didn't wear dresses or skirts. It was all jeans, shirts. Army or denim jackets for everyone. And Billy looks old. He needs moisturizer.

Tbh I liked this show but I could’ve loved it. I think they could’ve done a lot more with it in terms of characters and pacing because you don’t really get a feeling of how big a band they were and how much time has passed. Which makes getting them all in for an interview seem less important. I liked the subtleties of book Daisy and Billy more, their character and dynamic seemed much more complex. The whole show, but particular Daisy and Billy, seemed too shiny, too romanticised to really connect to them. I wasn’t fully buying it being the 70s and the clothes looked a little too clean, modern and urban outfitters to me. As well as historical moments like the Vietnam war, which altered the band and their characters arcs, being removed. I do like the expansion of the side characters though!! Overall, it doesn’t top the audiobook and I’m sad it wasn’t what I wanted in terms of costuming, historical context and lacking characterisation but I see so much potential in it, I did enjoy it and the album is a banger !!!! Feel like this comment is a bit ranty but I’m just frustrated cos I was so close to really loving it!!!

didnt watch the show yet (besides this reaction vid) but i feel they made camila appear more clever and conniving, like she wanted to purposefully seduce billy? idk if this was in the book (read it awhile ago) but the fact she knew who billy was and pretended she didnt, she got pregnant, he cheated and then yelled at him that that they would still be a family together and implied she would stay financially dependent on him. SPOILERS in the books, she even told daisy to leave the band because she knew billy would cheat on her with daisy. and billy and camila lived in a mansion and she loved how he wrote songs for her. its valid as hell for wanting your husband to pay child support and support the children as much as she did, but her being a fan and pretending she didnt know him when they met adds a nuanced layer to her motivations. idk. not justifying billy's cheating (esp with fans.. ew) but it really feels like hes trapped in a marriage he doesnt want to be in. and if the kids werent there, he wouldve left camila a long time ago.

@@withcindy thanks for agreeing, cindy! and surprised about the likes lol bc i feel almost everyone likes camila. i think the worst part in the books was her telling daisy to leave the band bc of billy's desire towards her (although partly was the reason camila did that was for daisy to not destroy herself in the band due to substance abuse but camila also wanted daisy to leave billy alone). i dont think camila had a conversation telling billy to keep his boundaries near the end so it just left a bad taste in my mouth. and then decades later when she died she left a letter to billy to make a song with daisy as camila's last request. felt weird she was tryna play matchmaker in the grave bc its possible daisy wouldnt want to see billy after all that time (personally, there r ppl i used to love id be kinda annoyed seeing now after years so...) just my input i guess.

wow, tv keeps getting better and better, tho tbh I can't imagine how you write a story to lapse across a dozen or more episodes. I suppose it's based on a soap opera formula, or something like that, but do the actors develop their own characters or are they reliant on directors? Well, it looks very interesting, even if it is hard to imagine where they possibly can go with this story - especially with that Malibu novel being so well known.

Yea Sam Caflin is not aging well at all he is 36 but looked like he was in his 40’s most of the time. It was especially bad whenever they had him next to Camila because she is 9 years younger than him but she looks so youthful compared to him 😂😭.

The show was alright but like. I really didn't like Riley Keogh as Daisy 💀 I've seen people praise her acting and it just did noooot work for me at all, like half the time I'd find myself thinking "this is an actress and she is portraying this character" instead of being immersed in the story. idk I guess nepo babies don't have rights to me specifically lmao

Tbh u aren't wrong. I saw more the actress than the character and a lot of her line delivery is off. especially when she said "im not the muse, I'm the somebody" 🤷‍♀️

maybe it's a phrase millennials just can't let go of but using "pvssy" as an insult in 2023 is wild lmao. feminine associated qualities have been used as a negative/a way to demean queer ppl &/or feminine presenting ppl for decades. sure, nbd, but on the other hand, language matters. y'all have said as much in past videos😅 anyway, your collabs are always so fun! that just threw me off a bit

I overall enjoyed the show, but I have to agree, it lost a lot of the nuance of the characters in the adaptation process. Reading the book the love triangle never annoyed me, mainly because it was very obvious Camilla and Daisy had a lot of respect for each other and Camilla if I remember correctly, trusted Daisy and Billy that they won't cheat on her even if they had chemistry and sometimes toed the line. The fallig apart was more about the harmful effect their relationship had on the sobriety of both Billy and Daisy, compounded by the sudden death of Teddy and the other sh*t that happened between the bandmates. In the show they really upped the drama by putting the classic love triangle jealousy angle back, which I wasn't a big fan of. A strong theme that also kind of got lost in the adaptation process was the rampant sexism in the music industry and the fact that women had to sacrifice so much more to get to the same position. Without stressing that Daisy, Camilla, and especially Karen felt much more bitchy and entitled than necessary. Expending Simone was a great change, even though making her the only relevant POC and LGBTQ+ character was veering strongly into tokenism. Maybe instead of Simone doing everything by herself, they could have left the original sixth bandmate, Pete in the show and give him a bit more personality by giving him a gay storyarc? Idk. I also overall really enjoyed the casting and not knowing much of the music of the era the soundtrack seemed perfectly fine too. Riley has a really impressive singing talent, so I hope she continues with music after this.

I feel Camilla’s logic is not straight logic but old fashioned logic. My mom always talk about her parents and other parents instill in their children. You have to stay with this toxic person. When she tried to leave, her mom sent her back to my dad. This is what many women in this time had to deal with. They felt forced to stay in a bad relationship especially for the kids. That is the part that sucks especially if the women can’t work or make her own money. It is different now. Thank god.

Everybody shitting on riley is soo crazy to me I think she brings out the childlike and excited nature of daisy soo well. She balances the bratty sassy a bitch if u will but also the vulnerable and broken side of daisy so well. It's easy to read d book nd right off daisy as jst a bitch which is so wrong bcz she always jst wanted to be loved and made so many wrong decisions like humans do. And sure sam in the first few eps looked way older but he's perfect later on considering he looked older than he was supposed to in the book due to his addiction. What I loved d most abt the show is The nuances sam and riley being to the characters who r both broken addicts bt also feel so deeply, their chemistry their banter they carried the show for me tbh

Yeah I agree - I think that Riley’s take still isn’t that firey as I expected tbh, but with that being said, I think her more subdued way of firing back is more grounded in reality. It would get annoying if all she was doing was getting mad and firing back in a loud voice
@varshitajujare4743

@@annushankar3032 evn in the book I always thought she's more broken and lonely than she's a bitch. It's mostly Billy who goes on and on about how mch of a pain the ass she is and it's more due his own feelings towards her. Daisys past is soo traumatic with her parents losing her virginity to a grownass man in a hotel room to men introducing her to drugs to men stealing her music. It's soo complex I think Riley handled it very well.
