I've watched numerous videos on how to trellis tomato plants - many of which requires one to spend a considerable amount of time on construction. You have illustrated how quick, simple and inexpensive it can be! Thank you for inspiring me to grow tomatoes!

I recommend looking up "tripod lashing" for making a reliable knot to tie those bamboo sticks together. And maybe use something like a prusik hitch for tieing the string to the lateral stick.

I watched your video just in time for my newly planted tomato plants. I normally skip anything involving garden construction bc I can't afford it or it's beyond my skill set but this was just perfect. I had to buy the bamboo stakes but it was worth it. I'm now going to check out all your other videos. Thanks for this common sense affordable option. And I love how natural they look in the garden. I did use one of last year's mammoth sunflower stalks as the top connecting pole.

Man, pay dirt! I've watched a dozen trellis videos for tomato supports. ALL involve brackets and expensive wood. Then I watched yours. Teepees! I've used these for vertical growing (beans/ cukes), but your method never occurred to me. Bamboo is difficult to find here in Central Florida, so I will be using split 1x2's with a reinforcing T-Post for each teepee just as I do for my vegetables. The best part for me is the extensibility of the total length of the frame. My small row of tomatoes is 26 feet. I will simply add teepees as needed to reach this length. And, as you showed, and I have done, at the end of growth, I will simply pull up the T-post and teepee wood, fold up, and store..Wonderful. Thank you!

May I also recommend using mammoth sunflower stalk. They grow to 10-12 feet tall, make a beautiful flower head with edible seeds, and spent stalk are 1 inch or more in diameter. Also a plus they will not be invasive or nuisance to remove once they are planted.

And i will have to use what i have and that is small trees and limb wood and some string. I will have to use old Tee shirt to tie around my tomatoes, my string is to thin & will cut the plants, & i will tie the string to the Tshirt and then to the trellis

Hi Jag! Thank you for the video! I followed the steps & trellised 4 tomato plants. One question though - what do you do once the plant reaches the top of the string? I assume you left two feet of string for some reason but I am still trying to figure that out. Any advice is helpful!
@onskosbos2 жыл бұрын
You just make the string less taut - by doing this, the tomato stem will naturally drop in a spiral fashion (instead of the straight-up line), thus creating more vertical growth potential.
