Daiwa Saltist 30HA unusualy cause of a fishing reel failure and how to diagnose and repair

I serviced a sluggish Penn 209 this morning. The owner paid to have it serviced last year. The drags were new, gear side clean and the grease was fresh. The problem was with the levelwind. The pawl was filthy. The cups holding the worm gear at each end were packed with corrosion and grease that had to be drilled out. Last year's service hadn't touched the levelwind. That reel was fishing today but gave me some trouble.

You also need to check the tracks of the worm gear, especially if the other parts had dried grease in them

Hi Dennis. Not terribly important, but I was trying to find out where that second washer came from at around the 9:41 mark. It seemed to have dropped from the gear shaft. How do you think it got there?

The washers on the desk dropped from the yoke. They go at the base of the yoke stud before you add the springs. That washer prevents the springs from binding on the yoke when moving up and down. there are 2 of those washers. One for each side - Dennis

First question - do you have braid on the reel? If you do, have you backed the spool with mono before adding the braid. Your issue sounds like classic braid slip and not the drag washer system

Yes braid but I've confirmed that the braid is not slipping.
