On my laith I can move the tool post so that I can hand wind at whatever angle I set but I have to hand wind it with the fine screw wheel. I do get a good finish though, if a bit time consuming. Have you got a boring bar so you can take out material from inside between the bearings, as that will remove weight without loosing a lot of strength (better than outside in as you loose more per unit of weight removed)?
