What I learnt about my extended time in Varanasi is that true Aghori’s will not be sitting in the middle of the street or inviting you to ceremony’s, you will hardly be able to get near them. They have people with them that will move you on but if you look in the shadows, you will see them. Respect they want their privacy, they are not there to practice their beliefs for a show and move on. The fake Aghori’s will be doing this for the tourists along with the fake Sadhu’s. Varanasi is full of them. Watching the people in India, westerners are so desperate for their unique spiritual or cultural encounter, they will believe anything for what they are chasing. People need to chill, India will gift you what you need at the time even if it is not what you are seeking.

I went to Varanasi many years ago and watching this video it is so amazing that the surreal, dream-like quality of that place is apparent even in video. It is an incredibly powerful experience being there, it is like being in a dream or a different dimension of reality. There is no time, no order except that which nature defines. After a few hours it changes you and this strange, alien quality starts to bubble up from your unconscious. It’s hyper-reality, like that sense of extreme familiarity or homecoming you sometimes experience on a trip except you’re not on drugs you’re just alive in a place that offers no artificial filters of any kind. It’s terrifying and beautiful and I really hope I can someday return before I die.

“Beyond terrible” is a better English translation of Aghori than “not terrible”. The goal being to transcend concepts of terrible, good and bad, so that all existence, including that which is seen as terrible, is perceived as one and divine. It’s not a path for the faint hearted.

aghoris are secretive. They have devoted their lives to Lord Shiva. Nothing else matters to them. For them, eating human flesh is just as simple as others eating food. Nothing more nothing less. I would suggest you to watch a podcast by BeerBicep here on youtube only. You'll find that interesting.

New subscriber here! This video is phenomenal. Thank you so, so much for telling the story of the Aghori so respectfully. I am Indian, but born to parents who converted to western cultures and religion during the end of British colonisation and left to have a new life in Australia, where I was born. Much of my family history has sadly been lost forever as my parents were encouraged to adopt to western culture to obtain a “better” living standard and were educated in British administered schools. They feel ashamed of their history because they were “lower caste”, so having open discussions about certain traditional practices is impossible. I’ve been searching for honest, authentic portrayals of Indian culture to re-educate myself and I’ve found it in your wonderful material. I heard stories from my grandmother about how my grandfather used to anoint, clean, and burn bodies in his village. Over time, he completely lost his sense of smell as he prepared bodies for burial and we used to joke about how he couldn’t smell my mothers awful cooking! Haha! My grandmother mentioned that he ate human flesh during a ceremony, most likely hosted by Aghori. My grandfather was a very spiritual and gentle soul. He had many friends of different social classes, and religions, and was kind to all. When I saw you meet Kashi Baba, seeing you both interact with each other reminded me of my wonderful grandfather and brought me back to my roots. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and hope to see more of you!😊❤️👍🏽

That is a really funny joke, haha! And it reminds me of my time, my first time in Varanasi, in January of 1999. i stayed right behind the Harishchandra ghat, the small burning ghat on the other end of the city, our guest house owner would ask us, if we like the smell in the air, and we did not know then, what it was, filling the air and our nostrils....we actually did like it...then he told us....we laughed. Later that year i went back to India and stayed for nearly 4 months, 6 weeks in Varanasi again and i spent hours and hours, sitting in one of those two little round balconies, overlooking the main burning ghat, the Manikarnika ghat. It was fascinating, it truly was. To sit there alone and watch this ritual going on, if some people would not be wearing western clothes, you might as well be sitting there in the year 1000 A.D., you know...thinking about life & death... .. . . . .
