Dalai Lama Asks Boy To Suck His Tongue | ISH News

The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the best-known living Buddhist figure in the world. He is the 14th Dalai Lama. He fled to India in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in Tibet. After fleeing Tibet, the Dalai Lama is now living in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.
On 28 February 2023, an event was going on in McLeod Ganj which is in Dharamshala. Around 100 school students were present at the event, which was organized at a temple.One of the students present there asked the Dalai Lama on microphone if he could hug him. The Dalai Lama asked the boy to come up to the platform where he was seated. The Dalai Lama points to his cheek and says, “first here,” asking the boy to give him a hug and a kiss. The Dalai Lama then points to his lips, and says: “then I think finally here also.” He then pulls the boy’s chin and kisses him on the mouth. “And suck my tongue,” the Dalai Lama then said, sticking out his tongue, forehead to forehead with the student. The boy quickly stuck out his own tongue and touched his forehead with the Dalai Lama. He then took the boy’s hand and touched it to his cheek. The Dalai Lama then hugged the boy and advised him to look to those who create “peace and happiness” and not to follow “human beings who always kill other people”, before giving him a final hug. The identity of the boy is not known.
The video was recorded by one of the attendees and amassed more than 1 million views. Twitter users slammed the footage, calling it "disgusting" and "absolutely sick". A lot of users criticized the Dalai Lama’s actions.
The Dalai Lama has recently apologized after the video went viral. On 11th April 2023, the office for the Dalai Lama said he “wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused,” adding he “regrets” the incident. The statement said, “His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras,”
According to a 2014 BBC article, sticking out your tongue can be considered as rude, but in Tibet, sticking out one's tongue is a sign of respect or agreement and is often used as a greeting in traditional Tibetan culture. It has been a tradition followed by the Tibetan people since the ninth century, when the region was ruled by Lang Drama, who was known for a black tongue. After the death of the king, the locals started showing their tongues when asked to confirm that they are not like him or his reincarnation.
But this video is certainly not about any cultural expression and even if it is, such cultural expressions are not acceptable. February’s incident isn’t the first time the Dalai Lama has sparked controversy in recent years.
He had to apologize after a 2019 interview during which he said if a female Dalai Lama should succeed him, she “should be more attractive.” In 2018, he said that Mahatma Gandhi wanted to give the prime ministership to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, but Jawaharlal Nehru refused as he was "self-centered". He added that India and Pakistan would have remained united if Mahatma Gandhi's dream had come true. The Tibetan spiritual leader later apologized for his comment.

Anyone who thought that His Holiness The Dalai Lama is a pe**phile because of the viral video simply has no idea of what they are talking about and his playful character. Always jovial and playful, The Dalai Lama has done this with so many public figures in the past and in a very public and a very humorous and fun poking manner. The same thing happened during this event too, and it was attended by hundreds of people and broadcasted live via all major media stations, not behind close doors. It was the kid himself, who offered to come up and hug the Dalai Lama, not the other way round as some trollers are claiming. Who would do it in public if you have such ill intentional motives? The Dalai Lama often makes use of rudimentary English to communicate, especially with kids. So, The Dalai Lama, an octogenarian who could be the great-grandfather of that kid kisses the child and touches his forehead (a traditional Tibetan form of greeting) in a very playful way, teases the kid to touch his tongue in a absolutely disarming and jolly manner. The irony is that the tongue-sucking bit doesn’t even take place as all the social media trolls are blaring in madness. Some individuals working for organizations with vested interests against the Dalai Lama, Tibet and Buddhist teachings, have recirculated and retweeted that old video in a cropped manner making people confused and cast grossly iniquitous images in their head. If you had just; 1: Check where the video re-originated after two months of the actual event taking place. 2: That the child and the parents of the kid has no complaints or issue during, after and now regarding this incident. 3: The origin of where the retweets and comments are coming from. 4: And the religion to which the name of many commentators were associated with. Then it’s not that hard to imagine who is masterminding this whole “incident”. One would never think that the atheistic ruling agents of the largest population in the world and the second largest religion on earth would have so much commonality. If you want to know the whole picture you must see the video clip in its entirety, not cropped, cut and edited versions of it. This is a man who has worked all his life for humanity. A man who wakes up at 3am and dedicates his entire day for all sentient beings. A man who has rigorously kept all 253 Vinaya rules for 7 decades. A man who has always stood for peace, non-violence and for the less fortunate. A man who has sparked inspiration in millions and hope for billions. A man who looks at the president of the most powerful nation in the world and the begger on the street with same respect, love and compassion. He is the personification of compassion itself. He is the icon of peace and love for the whole world. He is the apostle of morality, goodness and wholeness in this world. That man is the only hope the world has if it wants to get united and become one. If you still think that the Dalai Lama is a per**rt. The boy and his family are perfectly fine, grateful and happy after the opportunity to meet the Dalai Lama. Please watch their interviews from after the incident. I understand what you are coming from. You are not familiar with our culture and the short edited video are circulated everywhere by the CCP to make everybody to question his holiness's intentions. China has been calling his holiness names and trying to defame him ever since Tibet was occupied and he was exiled to India. There has never been any incidences in his 87 years of life where CCP could absolutely defame and tell the world otherwise. But this time, sadly because of very little knowledge about our culture and his holiness's profound love for children and his innocence, they got this window of opportunity and used it the best way they can by editing the video with different subtitles to make sure everyone sees the word "suck my tongue" because to everyone who are familiar with our culture would "ALARMED" with these words. But believe me when I say this, my grandfather has told me to "eat his tongue" on numerous occasions. It's an expression of saying I don't have anything else to give you. Language barrier is REAL, his holiness has 2 translators during that event. He still struggles to speak in English. He dedicated his whole life to promote love and compassion. Like he always says, "we all are same human brothers and sisters". Therefore as a fellow human sister, I empathize with you for not knowing the whole truth and it human nature to quickly draw conclusions.
