I came across my guest, Jigme Ugen after he uploaded a video in response to a viral clip of a young Indian boy with the Dalai Lama. The video Jigme uploaded explained Tibetan cultural traditions and tried to give another opinion on what was going around on the mainstream media. My intention here is not at all to convince you that the Dalai Lama is one thing or another but when I decided to share this video on Instagram some of the responses I got enraged me. Some people rejected it without even watching it. This led me to decide to have this conversation to tell my listeners that the top skill we need in today's fake world of social media, is to always listen to the opposite point of view before we make up our mind.
Jigme Ugen is the President of the Tibetan National Congress who has lived in exile in Minnesota, USA since 2001.
Listen as we discuss:
- Important disclaimer
- The opinion and the other opinion
- Meaning of prayer
- History of Tibet
- Seven Years In Tibet and Kundun
- Injustices and struggles
- Empathy and compassion
- Child abuse
- Culture shock
- Sky burial
- Tibetan culture
- Squeezing cheeks
- THAT video
- The long tale
- A community in pain
- The impact of hate speech
- The truth and the sun
- Finding peace and harmony
- The inner child
- Obama’s ears
- Sexual harassment
- Consider ALL opinions to find the truth

Tashi Delek! I am from Germany. One example of many I have experienced in Tibet: In September 1993 I was on buddhist pilgrimage to Kailash. I had to be in Lhasa for aclimatation for 10 days. At the Jokhang temple cameras of the Chinese occupiers could be seen everywhere. A pregnant dog was eating garbage and drinking wastewater - the dog was so hungry - in front of the chinese police station. A chinese policeman came out and kicked the dog in the stomach brutally. I yelled at the policeman to stop. Suddenly a very old Tibetan man came up to me, crying deeply and scolding. He said to me: "Tibetans don't do such things. Please tell the world what is happening here". He spoke only a few words of english and lost complete the control of his emotions. I looked around me. There were cameras everywhere. Normally, I would have hugged and comforted him. But I was in panic, because I knew we were in a dangerous situation. I was aware that there were police officers in the area of Jokhang and Barkhor in regular clothes without uniforms. You have to know that in the early 1990s, only a few tourists could travel to Tibet and the repression of CCP was enormous. There was a prison for "insurgents" near Lhasa. I must do something quickly. So I pushed the Tibetan man away and said to him: "I know that. Go away. Please don't talk to me. Please go away". Because I was so afraid that if the police heard him shouting and talking to a tourist, they would put him in jail. I wanted to protect the old Tibetan man. Fortunately, he then left quickly. I have never forgotten him. This is really the truth! This is exactly how it happened! I love the Tibetan people and their culture. I cannot live without it. ❤ Almost my whole life has to do with Tibet. I worked for many years in a political association for Tibet, have a Tibetan dog, her name is Dekyi. She will be 17 years old this summer. I have visited McLeod Ganj many times and through my volunteer work I was also allowed to meet the Dalai Lama. Thank you very much! Long Life for His Holiness.🌹 We will not give up! Free Tibet! 🙏 💪

I wrote the following to Jigme: Thank you Jigme! Many many blessings to you, your family, your peaceful country Tibet and the dear Dali Lama! I wish you good luck with many Western minds who only see everything, everyone and the whole world and all other cultures thru their western conditioned mind, and who are inflexible in their view that their way of thinking and seeing things is the correct way and the only way and anyone who does not share their view should be vilified and violently attacked. Always so absolutely sure of their self ordained godlike omniscience, often omitting one of the steps (many of the steps actually) in critical thinking which is to "analyze assumptions and biases" along with being open to ambiguity (before coming to a conclusion) is not possible for many at this time in the west. The moment I saw the short edited viral clip without sound while working out in the gym, I thought "oh no" as I knew what western minds would do with this. I knew in my heart that the DL had only the most innocent intentions, but I know my country's people and their quick to judge, quick to hate and even quicker to attack anyone and anything that does not conform to their view of how the world should be exactly like them mentality. But I knew in the mind and heart of the Dali Lama, a celibate man for 87 years who has only worked and devoted all his life to the cultivation and teaching of peace, kindness, humility and harmlessness, none of the dark projections upon him by western minds was even remotely close to the truth about his Holiness. But you can't explain anything to many westerners or hope for any use of critical thinking skills which calls for the analysis and withholding of assumptions and biases, because even though I come from the west, many many of my fellow compatriots all think they are the oracles of truth and who's negative views of everything and everyone not of western culture is born of their self appointed godlike omniscient powers that they are so certain they possess; with not even an ounce of humility enough to pause for even half a second to be open to views other than their own before jumping to attack. Many western minds are incapable of considering that they could possibly, just maybe, need to pause, hold off a moment on leaping to a damning conclusion and take the time to investigate the story further, speak to people who are native to the country in question, discover if the video/information is taken out of context; if the video is being presented in its entirety; or even maybe, just possibly, that they could be wrong. thank you again...... thank you! ❤‍🔥 p.s. In Japan, it is an extreme insult if you attempt to give a monetary tip to anyone in the restaurant or taxi business or any other profession. When I heard this, it was hard for me to understand how such a complete opposite view of tips could be, given that if you do not give a tip in western culture, that is considered to be an insult. Not everyone sees the world and shares the same customs as in the west. 💜

Exactly in most developing countries in the east women still breast feed in public, I used to see breast as a source of milk for the infant and that’s it. I wouldnt even bother looking as it’s so common. It was when I was Belgium I saw a woman feeding milk with a bottle, when I asked my friend why, she replied “that’s gross” I asked why gross ? She replied “that’s not very common here” I was taken back, we were always taught mother milk is best not just in nutritional terms but also to bond between the infant and the mother.

@@acho5424 Thank you Acho. Tara Brach, the famous Buddhist spiritual teacher, posted a short video in support of the HHDL. I commented under her video how sad it was that westerners projected their own darkness onto this innocent situation. I got very hateful replies saying how blind I was, and horrible was the action of HH. In fact the comments were so vicious that all the comments were "turned off". I am sorry for the way my countrymen behave. You were raised in a respectful, pure minded, kind hearted country. While I haven't given up on my country, I am so sorry many here have so much darkness and evil thoughts in their own hearts and minds that they can not fathom that others could be so pure and genuine; they don't realize that they are not seeing reality, but rather they are seeing the projection of their own inner darkness and their own evil thoughts that they have overlaid upon other innocent people. I am sorry that my fellow Americans have become so quick to hate, vilify and attack others in the name of their self-righteousness. I hope this will change some day, but I fear it will be a very long long time in the future.

This is what we need more of in this world. We need seekers of truth, we need people to slow down before judging, we need people to be open about understanding, we need more people willing to learn. As a Tibetan, I feel like we took the 1st and a massive hit on a well planned synchronized digital attack, cannot imagine the wrath of AI and deepfakes if people learn something from us and try to analyze the images thrown from the internet. Such well grounded conversations. Thank you Mo for your questions and having Jigme over, just love anecdote about your meeting with his holiness and the Islamic quote you’ve shared!

I am here again! I want to touch a bit on what Jigme la talked about in regards to Tibetan Buddhists in Tibet would feed their corpse to vultures, and so, being a Tibetan Buddhist myself residing in the west, first thing I did when receiving my first ever free health card was that I signed to the heath organization to donate all my organs when I die to donate and do research too. I was asked by my friend why I did it and my response was that “ What is the use of these physicals when I die and in fact there is no vultures to feed them like in Tibet. Others said to me, “ Authorities could misuse it and take out your organs before you actually die. They can not be trusted “. I agree with the second one as it is true in some part of the world but I have not changed my mind until now. It has been already over 15 years since I signed for it. As a Buddhist, I want to make my life purposeful when Iam alive and after my death too if possible🙏🙏🙏

Thank you fellow Tibetans and our Himalayan brothers and sisters. Our love and devotion towards our sublime leader is unparalleled especially during these trying and degenerate times. You have demonstrated to the whole world how special you are and how special our leader is. In our united love for truth and justice embodied by HH the Dalai Lama, we're indeed rich. Despite our scattered existence, often difficult, in diaspora around the world, we must march forward for justice and peace. May His Holiness the Dalai Lama dwell in our heart and soul in eternity and continue to bless the souls that are oppressed and treated unjustly around this world. It is now evident around the world that the nefarious manipulation of HH the Dalai Lama video clip is backfiring. Guess who benefits by slandering His Holiness. Please don't be puppet and foot soldier of CCP and dictator Xi's regime. The powers behind the propaganda scheme cannot drive a wedge between our leader and our people. I suggest we use "CCP", instead of "China" in our protest slogans. Think of the many Chinese citizens who are behind the bars in their own country for speaking their mind. May the fascists and dictatorships around the world fall. May the truth, justice and peace prevail. The jewel that descended from the high Himalayas, the roof of the world, cannot be tarnished. His radiance outshines your dark and deluded mind. Get a glimpse of the Buddha of Compassion, the great 14th Dalai Lama , The jewell of the lotus born and be filled with spontaneous wellspring of joy. May Your Holiness forgive us and cleanse the minds that are clouded and thoughts that are twisted.

I started doing my own investigation and Jigme was a great help to help ease my own mind. I found other items that helped me to find the real truth about the event. I saw the many protests held around the world in support of the Dalai Lama. I now believe the Dalai Lama was being his joking funny self and using Tibetan culture greetings. I have learnt so much about Tibet these last two weeks and I feel so sad for what is happening. Thank you for helping to reach peace in my mind over this event. Thank you!! 8 steps in the use of critical thinking skills: 1) Ask questions and gather information 2) Define the problem or point of concern clearly 3)Examine ALL evidence 4) Analyze assumptions and biases 5) Avoid emotional reactionary reasoning and conclusions 6) Avoid over simplification 7) Remain OPEN to considering other interpretations 8) Tolerate ambiguity. I know it is very hard to do in reality, but please....when you see something that appears one way in the media, and I am not a media basher, try your best to pause for half a second, take a breath, and apply the steps of critical thinking. Many in the west and elsewhere have become so quick to judge, condemn, vilify and attack others based on incomplete presentations, disinformation and without taking a moment to use all the steps in critical thinking to assess the information logically and in its entirety. Please be more careful, because innocent people are being hurt by our heartless rapid need to vilify and attack others without merit.

@@ndchieh It is not impossible, just very difficult. We must keep relying on Source and making our own efforts to be honest. Taking some time to meditate and reflect everyday is a good practice.

Now I live in NY in my forty’s, grew up in exile in Nepal, me and children in our Tibetan refugees settlement and even the Nepalese kids from our neighborhood would roam around far far away from morning till dark none of the parents in sight, It was safe. It never once crossed our parents mind or they fear the well beings of their children. Coz they were, are so pure and uncontaminated. The Neighbors watched the kids, even Nepalese neighbors would watch us. That’s the world we lived in. ❤

In the video with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, and the young Indian boy, I felt he had lost time and space. As many older people do, they drop into childhood suddenly. I felt he was a little boy relating to another little boy. Many older people do strange things from memories, and that is how it seemed to me. I understand the concern and backlash about this entirely, but in my heart, I do believe it was innocent. Unfortunately, we live in a society where many male leaders of religions have proven to be predatory. I have had this experience twice in my life. I’m learning about a path and finding out later the leader was corrupt and predatory. I have not abused myself, but I know that this exists. His Holiness has had such a positive influence even outside of Buddhism. He has been so beloved, but at the end of the day, he is human. He may be aging like so many people, and his behavior doesn’t reflect his current situation.

Yes, you are right, HH even mentioned his late brother who was closest to his age, whom he shared a very close bond, he was reminiscing his childhood memories of how he use to play with his brother when he met the boy.
