This kind of reminds me what power station operators use to have to do to add a new generator to an AC system. Thanks for the video. So the EV batteries in question if Lithium Ion operating in the 380 volt area should have somewhere just under 100 cells in the assembly. This is new info for me thank you. I have combined batteries of different capacity and differing ages with wide differences in internal resistance with no problems. The only caveat here is that your BMS for each battery should be the same manufacturer with the same communications. So what happens when the smaller capacity is charged faster is that the BMS turns off charging for that battery at 100% and the other BMS's for the other batteries keeps charging the higher capacity battery assemblies. You pointed out correctly that before doing the final hookup the voltage needs to be near the same, otherwise the higher voltage battery can rush to equalize the two batteries with a runaway ampere demand beyond the capacity of wiring or equipment. Thanks again..

Thanks for doing this experiment. I was thinking when there is a manageable voltage difference say 12v a dc load could be used to regulate the current flowing between 2 battery. Battery cooling is important.
@jamesphillips22853 ай бұрын
12V at 1 milliohm would be a current flow of V=IR-> I=V/R-> 12V/(0.001)= 12kA. That is higher than the trip rating of some circuit breakers (typically 10kA AFIAK). Dala measured to 0.1V. 0.1V/(0.001)= 100A. Still a lot of current: but at least the batteries are designed to handle that.

Hi Dala, do you see any chance to get an BMW i3 hooked up via CCS as an External „battery“ just for charging? Like using the car battery via CCS cable directly on Fronius Symo gen24 10 for example? Just by stats this should be possible. Bidirectional would be like the holy grail but just DC charging from Panels to car without AC side should be much more efficent… what are your thoughts? Thx for all your efforts! Keep going/charging 😁
@DalasEVRepair3 ай бұрын
This is doable, but the Battery-Emulator does not have the hardware required for CCS. It uses powerline communication (PLC), so some other hardware is needed to activate the CCS session. Someone might be able to develop an add-on board for this?

But the more the price for LFP are dropping the lower the likelyhood that we will ever get one car battery. 2 of our LFP 14 kWh batteries are brand new in metall case and with JK BMS just 3000€ . Fantastic project, this has to be a natural way forward for all the used battery packs that are accumulating. Unfortunately the National Grid in the UK prohibits Vehicle to grid. You can power up the LBC (BMS) through the round communication plug using a 12V bench power supply. If it has power, it will passive balance, doesn't need CAN or anything else. Best done with a fully charged battery. In time, it will burn off the higher voltage cells. I do this for a couple of days before installing a replacement battery pack Just be aware, that if your cells have different AHr, they will not maintain balance through the discharge cycle. And if seriously different capacities, you will get weak-cell warnings

@@DalasEVRepair greetings Dala, another good video. I use leaf modules at nominal 48V (14S) and they are very robust in the low stress home storage application. I have about 1000AHr and just keep adding more as I do Leaf battery replacements. Over 4 years use, SoH is still 95% (of the original degraded capacity) Anyway, the chap asked for a solution that doesn't require dropping the battery, opening the case and presumably removing the stacks to get terminal access. That's what I gave him. Yes, it's slow, but he claims only 50mV = 19.5WHr at a cell (parallel pair) level for a 100% SoH 30KWh pack. Assuming a 200 ohm balancing resistor and 4.000V cell voltage, that's 10.1 days to "perfect 0mV balance" on a 100% SoH battery. But anything

@pederb823 ай бұрын
Hehehehe. A bit too nervous. It’s no issue if there is a bit of a voltage difference as long as you have fuses to secure it don’t overload your cables. The batteries will simply equalize to the same voltage by making the battery with the highest voltage charge the one with lower voltage. But I guess you have to make some drama 🎭 for the viewers.
@DalasEVRepair3 ай бұрын
I checked with industry professionals. They use +-1.5VDC as a safety limit when connecting packs in parallel to avoid blowing fuses.
@pederb823 ай бұрын
@@DalasEVRepair that sounds about right. But there won’t be any booms or spark showers or fires. One will simply charge the other. The internal resistance plus the resistance of the cables and most importantly: the battery with the highest voltage gets it’s voltage pulled down under load charging the weak one. Thus limit even further the difference and total amps you will see. They are overly careful with 1,5 volt and it’s nice you’re being careful. But it would have been just fine with the diff you had.
