It's neat, the back row modules alone are similar capacity to an original whole 24 kWh battery pack! Best of luck! My 62 kwh pack now has 45k miles in the 2014 car, and continues to look good. We'll see!

Just a note on safety when using insulation meters. They output high voltage to perform the testing. Usually wise to wear high voltage rated gloves. At a minimum be very aware of any capacitors in the thing you are testing. I am more familiar with Fluke equipment, but there should be a voltage presence indicator. Be safe and have fun!

Hey Darla, you did a great job! And I really think that we would need much more people like you that keep older EVs running! Like you've already mentioned batteries with an issue at just one pack "others" usually through away. What a waste of resources. Anyway, the M12x1.25 is a common machine thread (machine screws) and also common on Italian cars, just if you should need spares.

Excellent work, and nice choice of stopping at Roadhouse. It's always a blast to see an American mall somehow teleported into the middle of the Finnish forest. A note on the insulation meter, though: I'm not sure how accurately it will read, since the leak wasn't at either end tap (you had 12 V from one terminal and 24 V from the other, so the leak must be between one of the middle cells and case). So there'd be a 12/24 V DC offset on the measured result, which might confuse the meter on a bad day. It'd probably still read close enough to give you a pass/fail, but it's worth keeping in mind. I usually try to look at the test current readout if it's present on a meter rather than the megaohm reading, since there's no internal meter logic involved in calculating that value.

Great news. I watched your videos to find out how future proof is to buy an EV now and upscale the battery in say 5 or more years. Do you think this is just a Leaf perk, or is it common for other manufacturers as well? Or even better, how would one dig this information out?
@b127_1
@b127_1 Жыл бұрын
You should not have to change the battery of a 2023 EV basically ever. If you buy a car with good thermal management and good enough range to where losing 10 or 15% to degradation isn't a big deal, then the battery will outlast the useful life of the vehicle. The leaf has neither. That is the reason why it is so popular for modding: if you've 60km of range left, then replacing the battery starts making a lot of sense.

I wonder if the earth leakage was just due to moisture ingress? It's possible that in the collision, the seal was compromised. If so, maybe the module you took out is actually OK? I had similar issues tracing a small leakage current in my DIY EV & it turned out to be moisture bridging one terminal to ground.

Great result. What happened to the old module - did you figure out why it was throwing that error code? Why did you bother to 500V test both positive and negative terminals to ground? I'd assume that if the internal impedance of the battery is somewhere around normal then these terminals would appear as a short to the 500V impedance testing meter. Am I missing something?
@juancarrera5524
@juancarrera5524 Жыл бұрын
Could be a diode or a failure of the circuit that only interacts with one side of the circuit. The high voltage system is entirely isolated from the low voltage system so the negative and positive terminals an the batteries should have no connection to the case.
@BenMitro
@BenMitro Жыл бұрын
@@juancarrera5524 Yes, thats right, to ground should be high impedance but the negative and positive are a dead short (a few milliohms) to each other. Any component in parallel with these terminals will be swamped by the short between the posts. So for the purposes of a mega test, either positive or negative terminals will give the same reading.
