I think it's a very mature move for him. He's done just about everything there is to do in the sport, and it's simply not worth the risk. And just for me personally, he thought of losing Jr in another incident like his dad is almost too much to bear.

I agree. The only thing not on his resume is a Cup championship, and at 43 when he retired, he was unlikely to win one at that point (there have only been three Cup champions older-his father, Lee Petty, and Bobby Allison). Honestly, I was hoping that the 2016 concussion that caused him to miss half the season would have been the point that he said "You know, I really don't need to keep doing this".

My dad suffered a very serious head injury in 1962 or 3 (hit by a truck at his work). He recovered, mostly, but the aftereffects lasted the rest of his life. His personality changed, becoming withdrawn and uncommunicative, suffering from insomnia and anger management issues. Just before he passed in 1998 he told my sister that he'd had a huge headache non-stop since the accident, almost 40 years. I had a bad one in 1990 (EMT's said it would have been fatal if I hadn't been wearing a helmet), and have noticed some of the same post-injury behavior patterns in myself. TBI is real, and some people never recover 100%

I think part of the reason Dale Jr was single up until 2016 was because he was afraid of loving someone that only cared about his money. I would too. I bet its tough for most celebrities and professional athletes to make those types of decisions like trusting someone in that way

I can relate to what he is suffering from And im sure he has some of the same deficits/impairments that I have. I have so much Respect for Junior for doing this. As a parent, husband, and team owner, he has future. My son is a retired Jockey. Concussions are scary. My son misses racing horses, but head injuries make it easier to be reminded those recoveries are as hard if not harder than broken bones. As I read Dale’s book, I saw so much of my sons symptoms, difficulties and riding a 1200 + animal at 50+ mph the next day after a concussion. I think It was impressive Dale was willing to speak up. As my son recovers, I hope he will tell his story because I think it is equally as big to win as it is to tell All Athletes and every day people not to mess with your brain #jrfanforlife

Every time I watch the footage from the 2001 Daytona 500, I feel so sorry for Darrell Waltrip. He was so proud to see his brother win the grandaddy of 'em all, moved to tears, and then to find out that the icon of the sport, a man he respected and had competed against, was killed in that wreck. I feel bad for everybody in that situation, too. Such a shame.

Dale Jr. is a rare breed. An oddity. Those who have reached the upper echelons of their chosen profession, made hundreds of millions, and have a fan base the size of Jr’s rarely are as in touch with the human side and as down to earth as he is. He could be the most selfish person possible. He could walk away from NASCAR entirely, but an island, and live in comfort for the rest of his life. But he loves the fans loves the people around him too much to do that. Genuinely a great human being.

I fell 15’ onto the asphalt on my head. I got a severe concussion. Dr said I was lucky to be alive. The symptoms were overwhelming to say the least. I did all the therapy and exercises to no avail. All I can say about severe concussions is this, from my own personal experience, the brain heals itself. It took about 8 months before all of the symptoms subsided. One day I had a concussion, the next day it was gone.

As a longtime Earnhardt Sr. fan, this really hit home. Earnhardt Sr. as a driver was a true legend, but whatever he was as a father just makes you feel sorry for Jr., Kelley, and Kerry. It's also tragic that even though Jr. overcame a lot of adversities in his career, Earnhardt Sr.'s death really affected him and motorsport long-term. And it's a damn shame that that gold digger Teresa legally screwed over the kids over their own family name.

Well said. The way his career will go down in the history books, is a complete travesty. Easily a top three driver of his generation, if not the best if it weren't for Stewart. But losing his dad and as a rookie at that, Theresa's list of low blows, and All the concussions from accidents and other drivers intentionally wrecking him, derailed it. He'll go down as a legend, and one of the greats, but he won't have a championship in the cup series.

Yep. Its racing in general really. I've had some wrecks myself, on a smaller scale, and they really hurt lol. I can't imagine what it'd be like to crash at 190+mph, like Dale. Despite the safety in racing, you get battered inside, and I don't think everyone realizes that. NASCAR has done a good job listening to their drivers, performing neurological tests, and making a trip to the infield medical centre mandatory, even if a crash seems small. Concussions are how your brain basically ricochets inside the skull, and twists etc. It doesn't take as much as people think. Good to see awareness brought to it these days
@AidanMillward
@AidanMillward 6 жыл бұрын
The attitude was always "You only get a concussion from a smack to the head, how do you get that in a car?" and the emphasis was always on cricket, football, baseball, american football and hockey as well as rugby and boxing where head injuries are high risk or expected. But when you crash, the brain gets wobbled around inside your skull and shrinks and expands quickly in the crash. Took them a while to get it.
