The fact that Dale Sr., and quite a few others from this era, came from humble beginnings to go on to be very successful because of their passion for racing and determination to win make these stories SO amazing. It wasn't necessarily about the money .. as a racer you just want to win, and the money will come with that. Nowadays kids are put in go-carts at an early age by parents with money and work their way through the ranks. Things were way different back then.

And the attitudes of too many of these younger drivers reflect that. The sense of entitlement is palpable. The average fan can no longer identify with the modern drivers.

"It wasn't necessarily about the money" It was all about the money dude lol what you think they drove for? Cheese curds and potatoes? Nah. In an era where you got your hands dirty and worked for your money, these boys found a great way to work for it. And no, things are not the same, but also, they kinda are. There are a bunch of people doing crazy stuff for attention on TikTok, that's not new, it's just a different version of what racers, comedians, news companies, and social media do. Vie for your attention.

@dalejr I have been watching your channel off and on for a while but its the stories like this that makes me miss the old days of nascar ssoooo much it is hard to describe the excitement and the feelings. For me I grew up in the 70's and from an early age I was around short track Saturday night racers in Colorado Springs Colorado up till 1985. I was 15 then my dad had always been a crew chief and painted all the cars for several local drivers he was with and until recently the last 3 years I've heard some stories of interpretation of rules (lol) that i never thought these guys could of pushed the limits on. And of course there are always those on track and off track incidents that are what makes legends like your dad. I never got to meet him but I think our life styles make it feel like we have been old back in the woods friends keep up the great content and old school stories.

So Dale came and talked to my series in the late 90s and. He was extremely anti Alchol Anti Smoking Anti FUN. It’s starting to make so much sense now why! He had made all of those mistakes and he was at the age where he was regretting it. So he was giving us the lessons he had learned. He did say Teresa saved him and he never would’ve went anywhere the road he was on. I think I believe it now.

I grew up watching Dale whip that number 3 around and he was my hero. I remember watching the crash and getting the news first thing when I woke up from my mom. I have supported everything Dale Jr. has done ever since. I love watching these stories but it breaks my heart every time seeing the Dale Jr dig to understand his father. You can clearly tell there is a hole left that was never filled by his dad and he is yearning to understand who his dad really was and why he wasn’t the dad he wanted growing up.

There wasn't enough cops there to control what was going on so me and a couple buddies weaved our way through the stands and got out of there. I grew up watching the best racing you could see back then. I remember the Busch Beer Dodge well that Earnhart drove, he was pretty tough but Haywood was the man to beat back then.
