We are nervously going to use my dads classic MF20 for the first time, as it’s our first year since his sudden death that we are running the farm without him
The 1968 baler has been on the farm for many years and it was always a proud moment for my dad dad when he dusted it off and got it going for another year of service!

Hiya Joanna & Nick, Hats off once again to you both I... No hang on, hats thrown in the air, please!!! Very, very well done to you both, dad is not the only one pleased with your work Jo, Nick's look at you spoke chapters about how proud he was too. This took me back to the 60s when I played at helping the local, long-suffering farmers making hay. You remember the old saying, 'Make hay while the sun shines.' Well, you definitely did that and the sun could not have shone brighter for you. I was 11 in 1968 when we moved to Cyprus for three years in June. When we came back I was 14 and far more interested in girls than working on a farm. Dad was in the RAF. So again the farm has moved forward without a hitch, well done to you both for learning on the go, again. Stay safe, Steve...

@@DaleFarm you are always welcome dear lady, you deserve loads of praise for your work and the way you've both stepped up and taken on the farm as the living breathing entity it is. People tend to forget that the farm is a collection of livestock and hay fields, all living, all needing food and water and when necessary medication. Then add the campsite filled with people, and the farm shop helping to feed them. Each part is hard work for seasoned experienced workers, then add that you've had little or no training in most areas, and then look at your results??? WOW!!! Keep on keeping on you two, you've taken on a hell of a load, but you're doing better than anyone could have predicted, and judging by the smiles we see on your tired faces, you are enjoying it, enjoying taking on where dad had to leave it. Yes, he would indeed be proud, or as I believe, He is proud, of you both! Steve xx...

That sure brings back memories of baling hay on hot summer days in the 70s. My father would drive the tractor pulling the baler, and my brothers and I would be on the wagon behind the baler to pull the bales off the baler and stack them on the wagon. It was a BIG job and one we all dreaded. But what a sense of satisfaction when it was all done. Thanks for bringing that memory back, Joanne and Nick. I lost my father on Christmas Day in 2015, and I lost my oldest brother on Tuesday due to COVID. So for a variety of reasons, the content of this video was especially timely--and heartwarming. Again, thank you.

Seemed a little odd that you began on the third row in from the hedge. You were dropping bales where they were in the way for the next pass. That involved moving each one by hand. I used a baler similar to yours back in the early 60s. Spent most of the day praying that the knotters would go wrong. There’s nothing worse than some loose bales coming out the back. Hay baling is usually a hot dusty job, but I notice Nick is still wearing gloves. The best way to toughen up your hands is to keep them bare. A bale crook is a very useful tool. I’m sure your dad must have had one. We also towed a sledge behind with someone stood on it stacking the bales in sixes, before pushing them off the back. But you’re doing a great job Jo. xx

Great to see a MF 20 baler again. Used to work on them in the 1970 /80s. Make sure the drive chains are kept tight and oiled, the knotters are kept clean and the knives are sharp. The PTO guards need some attention, would hate to see anyone getting hurt.

Many Congratulations to you both on a job well done. You really embraced hay making from cutting to storing the bales in the barn, of course under the watchful eye of uncle and no doubt Dad from above. Take a really big bow!! 👏👏👏

This reminds me of the first time we made hay in 25 years on our farm. My grandfather made silage towards the later part of his life because it was easyer for him. Hard to believe that this was me 9 years ago. Looking back i wished I had taken more videos of that day.

Yes guys!! 💪💪 you seem to take everything in your stride, and go from strength to strength…..it’s admirable!! You’ve worked your butts off but there’s no feeling like it, when the forage is in and you know you can relax, the stock will be fine through the winter thanks to your hard graft. Lucky to have uncle Peter to hand, a bit of support and a few pointers always help.

Well done guys that looked hard work but also very satisfying in the sense of following in your Dad's tradition. Also, for the actual physical effort made by you all. So, your Dad lives on through the Massey Ferguson. A true agricultural artefact still going strong. Thanks for sharing some sunshine.

My granddad bought one of these I think it’s a Massey Twenty they we’re a good baler in hay but we could never bale straw dense enough & had light bales, we pulled it with a 1967 Ford 4000 great tractor & still going now with a Lamboune cab.

Joanna...you and Nick should be well proud [especially you]...and your Dad is well chuffed with a BIG smile! That MF 20 [along with the 15] launched around 1963 and my Grandpap John bought a new 20 in '64. We'd hook a bale wagon to the 20 and I spent three summers with bale hook in hand staking bales before going off to Uni. One tip for that 20 - grease it at the end of the day and then check the grease fittings first thing the next morning to see if you can pump more grease in. 200+ bales with no break downs - that 20 is an amazing piece of kit in good running order! Enjoyed the video - thank you. Cheers...
