The big end of the con rod looks dry. Is there any discolouration of the big end? If so, you won't get far on it.

Doesn't look like it got too hot, no. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed!

Have you stripped the centrifugal filter on the end of the crank, and also made sure the spring-loaded button in the end of the crank is fitted correctly? If not, there will be very little oil pressure to the top end, and there will deffo be major problems.

I did strip and clean it, yes. Though I shall do so again before it goes back together. The button appears to spring as it should. Anything in particular to look out for?

@@whatsintheworkshop4478 Lack of oil feed to the top end, is only going to happen due to no pressure at the bottom, or the feed actually blocked. Oil feed to the head, goes through the clutch cover, and well worth checking that very carefully. Have stripped a Honda engine before, which had the main oil gallery inside the motor destroyed, as a result of kickstart issues. It had been bodged with car body filler, but when that failed, no pressure to the head, and head destroyed. I think you will need to split the cases, if there is nothing obvious you can see externally on the bottom end. Where did you get the motor from, and did it look like it had been a non runner?

Apologies, I missed this reply. Still not really sure what the cause of oil starvation was, but it appears to be absolutely fine now. There must have been a blockage somewhere which I dislodged. I did airline and brake cleaner everything thoroughly before the second assembly. Not ruling out splitting the cases in the future, but for now it seems happy.
