10 Funny Australian Commercials

I put together 10 funny Australian ads, trying to use only those made in Australia by Australian agencies for Australian companies for the Australian market. There are just a few and very small exceptions when it comes to the agency or the market, but the adverts are all Australian. I hope you enjoy them. 10. Australian Tourism, "Shrimp on the barbie" with Paul Hogan from 1984 by MOJO - the line "I'll slip an extra shrimp on the barbie for you" became a catchphase associated with Australia when in fact Aussies say "prawn" and the ad used the expression "shrimp" only for the US market

Toyota Hilux, "Bugger" from 1999, actually a New Zealand ad that is often mistaken for an Australian one, by Saatchi & Saatchi Wellington (writer John Plimmer and Howard Grieve, director Tony Williams, art director John Fisher) - the Advertising Standards Authority received a record 120 complaints about the commercial but the board ruled it was distinctly New Zealand and relevant to rural humour
11. Toyota Hilux, "Bugger" from 2002, the second commercial in the series inlcuding the dog
12. Vegemite, "Happy little Vegemites", the iconic commercial in an update version from 2011 that includes the famous jingle from 1953 by JWT

It would actually be Crocodile Dundee 4, but it's very easy, not to mention, understandable to forget that Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles (2001) exists since it's the very poor sequel to Crocodile Dundee and Crocodile Dundee II.

Haaa haaa, forgot about saying that Dundee actor (1 st film) Louis Guzman lives just down the road from us here in Burke, Vermont, USA. He's come along wasy since then, major movies (Traffic, Count of Monte Cristo, etc.) and dozens more. Big advocate for preserving nature and our landscape, super generous cat. @@DaliborTruhlar I got the 1938 date from a 1972 advert I found when I looked it up after watching your video because growing up in the 70s and 80s it seemed like all of the Dads and Grandpas had Old Spice aftershave so I knew it had been in Australia for a long time. It is great from drying out pimples, but you have to pop or pierce them first. Stings like hell, there will be tears, but in the morning you're just left with a tiny red dot. I'd bet lots of 80s teens like me knew that!

That scene of Chris Hemsworth in a high speed boat on Sydney Harbour - not possible; strict speed limits on one of the jewels in the Sydney crown; no way is anyone risking a death or collision with one of those craft being let loose there.

Great you listed all he ads, other info, & ad agency's in the description section, but re # 3. Foster's Carlton Mid, "Coincidence", it is CUB's (Carton & United Breweries) 'Carlton' brand of beers, which (CUB) also once made the Foster's brand. Foster's, as a company, hasn't existed since 1907, when Carlton Brewery (in Carlton), the Victoria Brewery, Castlemaine Brewery, & Shamrock, & McCracken breweries merged, with the Carlton Brewery leading the merger

But I suppose that was wrong, right?

​@@DaliborTruhlar Hi, I've just checked your channel bio, so see why you didn't know that Foster's was (near to) a dead brand inside Australia for approx 2.5 decades. But you did do, & well done, actual research for all you wrote. Just been googling & looking at items, outside of Aus, & seen many items do say it as Foster's Beer [implying it's made by a Foster's company, but understandable they put that, as many outside Aus, wouldn't know of CUB/Carlton & United Breweries. Before, I continue re Foster's/CUB, check out the Tourism Australia's advert /video with Lara Bingle. Her last name became apt for the ad. As it crashed (as in like car crash), overseas/outside of Australia re it. Except, for in New Zealand, as While the adverts were great (3 different but very similar ones produced) the first never got aired in many countries, due to 2 words, & isn't swear words (in OZ/NZ/UK & a number of other English speaking places) but it was either banned from screening in some countries, or restricted to after a certain time (e.g. 8:30 pm) which surprisingly, was in Britain considering the amount of foul language they allow in TV Show, even is a few that air before 8:30. Advert was subsequently edited, but as it was after all the associated promotions, and appearance by Lara in various countries, the impetus had been lost. The ads are almost as good as the Hoge's (Paul Hogan) ones, but without the Hoge's signature style, but good ads none the less. But due to as said above, also led Lara's career to become synonymous with her last name, but No Fault of her. Foster's Lager brand (made by CUB) was once a heavily promoted, & strong brand (in CUB's range of Brands) till around 2000 in Australia. Think they modified the brew, & reduced strength, so people just changed, as that time, to Coopers Ale (Adelaide/South Australia but sold across OZ) or to Carlton Draught which was cheaper anyway, or to Crown Lager which was/is sort of a premium lager, but still not a very premium beer, like the many craft beers available now. While Foster's is CUB's/Australia's biggest selling brand in overseas markets, be lucky to find it in 20 bars or pubs, in OZ. Until 2024. In past few years CUB have trying to, not very successfully, to get Foster's back in the Aus Market more. In 2024, they lowered alcohol content to 4.0 (down from 4.9). I don't know if that helped sales much, but only (very) few places I've seen it is some that more internationals frequent, than Aussies. Foster's in the UK isn't even exported from Australia. It is brewed & bottled, under licence, in the UK. Done so, at the Heineken owned Royal Brewery in Manchester. So next time you see Fosters anywhere, tell your mate/s it's a Heineken Beer. If I see it here, I'm going to try same, to a few people, but likely be friends that moved here from overseas, as many friends wouldn't fall for it lol. That's the short summary re Foster's, & being made by CUB; And Foster's becoming (mostly) as unpopular as Vienna Lager became, which believe(?) can't really buy (much) anywhere in it's own country, anymore, either. Whole story is 130 years long, lol. Thanks for the crediting/tagging :)

The information about the Vienna Lager ist interesting. I am from Austria, I don't know anybody who would drink it - but that doesn't mean much and is not against the beer that was invented here. Also, I was born in Czechoslovakia, so I would prefer the original Pilsner anyway 😊😊😊

Could you explain or liken the taste of vegemite? Is it salty/savory? Does it taste like vegetables? Is it ONLY used as a spread, like butter?? Every so often I see it at the grocery store and I contemplate buying it but I have no clue on the taste so I leave it.

As far as I know it is a little bit bitter and salty but not too much and has some thickness to it, if you can say that this way, it tastes like ... well ... @@NatashaWho Vegemite and Marmite are very similar, as is Promite and another English brand, I think. They are a very strong salty/savoury product and should be used in very small quantities. Vegemite is Australian, Marmite is NZ/UK. Although similar, the flavours are slightly different. They're very high in vitamins and minerals and very healthy. I like to spread mine on Bread, Toast, Crumpets and Muffins, and I usually add cheese or Lettuce. Or both, sometimes. Some people will be horrified that I do that, but I like it that way! When our Marmite factory was knocked over in the big Christchurch Earthquake a few years ago, Australia was kind enough to send us Vegemite to replace it until the Marmite factory was rebuilt, which took a few months. Thanks, Australia! It was OK as a replacement, but we were all very pleased when our Marmite factory was rebuilt and we had Marmite again. It's an acquired taste. I grew up with it from the time I was on solid food, so it's been a staple part of my diet for over 70 years now. Typically eaten for Breakfast or Lunch, or as a snack. If you want to try it, spread it on a slice of buttered bread or toast and add a slice of cheese or a lettuce leaf to make the taste a bit milder.

Really? As far as I know they had even problems using the word because it was thought to be too offensive in 1999. The Broadcasting Standards Authority said that 16% of people found the word unacceptable on television and radio. But they went with it anyway 😊
