Ken Kercheval was this show's secret weapon. JR, Miss Ellie, Sue Ellen, and Bobby were all top-notch, obviously, but man, Cliff was just the perfect foil. Devious when he had to be, but probably the most complex, most human character on the whole show.

YES. Barbra Bel Geddes started out as a stage actress first and had that thing that so many stage actors have which puts them in a class by themselves. My favorite is Colleen Dewhurst and if you think about Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn they were also in that class as is Kathy Bates. I don't know what it is about those who start on stage and go on to film and how they set themselves apart the way they do. I would imagine that it has something to do with having a level of professionalism because they are in front of a crowd all the time and cannot do a retake. I have noticed that with actors who start out on film but then go on to do stage work and how much more better they are afterwards.

I wish Pam, and Jock Ewing would have LIVED to see this. I always said it about Cliff Barnes, that if he hadn't put so much of himself into that Ewing/Barnes feud, he ACTUALLY could have done well for himself. But he was stubborn just like his father, and the whole time the Ewing/Barnes feud was based on a lie. I do agree with Cliff on one thing, I think JR, and him would have hated each other regardless of what their last names were. Overall, I knew Jock Ewing never screwed Digger Barnes. That's how this whole Barnes/Ewing feud got started.

@threetreasures7698 Жыл бұрын
That’s what he’s needed and been so hungry for (understandably so) - a loving hug infused with compassion. Cliff was hungry for a family, with all its complex dynamics, headed by a strong but fair and loving mother and father. As I matured (I was born in 1957) and re-watched this show with my mind and my heart, it was easy for me to perceive his wounded soul and how his action or reactions were just his way of surviving and protecting himself. Oh, he was a piece of work alright, but he had more of a legitimate reason than JR or Bobby to be so combative. Cliff envied what they had: family. Something he also wanted and needed. We ALL want to be part of either a strong, supportive, loving family - either our birth family or one of our own choosing.

This is a real shame because Cliff never ended the feud. It continued right where he became head of a committee where he had the power to put Ewing Oil out of business (Bobby convinced him otherwise), and then finally, at show's end, Cliff got full control of Ewing Oil and was swimming in it like a pig in shit. And then much later, on the TNT Dallas, he had become so evil and corrupt where the feud was still going on with Cliff willing to kill his own daugher and grandchildren on an oil rig to get even with the Ewings. Miss Ellie would have been ashamed of Cliff for going back on everything he said. Cliff could have just moved on, tried again at a different career, or just run his business away from the Ewings. It never worked out that way. I always thought it was pecuiliar that Cliff wouldn't run his oil business from somewhere like California or Louisiana where oil is quite plentiful. Maybe he could have averted the BP disaster.🤣

I agree, as much as I loved the new Dallas series, looking back there was no need to turn Cliff into such a villain. They could have easily brought in a new character for that.

@@vgsr7435 More like ignored it like they did those two TV movies. When something takes time to make, not to mention how it costs money to do it, the fans can't just ignore them. Those movies should have made it into the series' continuity and maybe just had a show without Cliff Barnes.
@forestgeorge8855 Жыл бұрын
Some of it was bad writing, but by the beginning of the last season when James wants Cliff to attack JR, he refuses to do it because of Bobby losing April. Which seems very out of character when they brought Cliff back in the reboot relaunch and made him a monster that covered up Pam’s death, etc.. Then again, Dallas was rebooting stuff even when it was still a series. The dream season and then Pam’s exit rebooted the series. Then adding Carter McCay as a foil (almost a villain) fully conformed the reboot of the series during the series last three years. The movies in the 90’s had their own timeline that was erased by the TNT series. You’d expect to see characters, outside of Hagman because he really died, to just start stepping out of showers because it seemed like at a certain point they just retconned stuff to fit their narrative.
