The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott are in the middle of contract negotiations, something that has become quite commonplace over the last few years given how insistent the team is on procrastinating such an important contract. What could things have looked like if the Cowboys had been proactive with Prescott from the very beginning? RJ Ochoa discusses.

This should be mandatory watching for every single Cowboys fan!! The Jones approach of waiting to practically the last minute makes zero sense & is completely idiotic when compared to every other franchise. Makes you think that this front office hopes the player has a bad year so they can win the negotiations when it comes to extending their stars. Yet this is the same franchise who prioritizes keeping their own homegrown talent?! The conspiracy theorist would say that the Cowboys do it this way so Jer-rah & CapBoy can blame their star player's contracts for not signing higher end free agents. When in reality, if they extended these guys earlier than they do, they would have the money to upgrade this roster through free agency. There's three ways to improve a team, drafting players, trading players, & signing free agents. This franchise has made an executive decision to only use two of those options. Obviously they sign free agents but it's never a Tier 1 or Tier 2 free agent. It's Tier 4, 5 & 6. Their stubbornness & arrogance is the sole reason why we haven't seen a NFC championship in decades.

It won’t cost them anything if they don’t intend to extend him. Don’t rule out they just don’t trust him beyond this year and prefer to just part ways. We don’t know their plans nor his. Dak holds the cards and maybe he’s also made his mind to leave and go for the money.

@@BigDal8604 he’s not exactly blameless. Three of his worse ever performances come in playoffs. He has to own that. It’s also Happened under different regimes w different coaches and supporters. Sooner or later he has to look in the mirror too. The FO just isn’t serous about winning championships. That’s what fans get wrong. They fall for the Jones cheap ways and selling if hole year in and year out. It doesn’t matter when they paid Dak, even doesn’t matter what they pay. The FO is just not good enough at football as they are about making money.

@@FrankieKennethL he’s definitely had bad games but him playing bad shouldn’t be the determining factor of every game. We saw qbs get to the championship games not playing well we saw pat mahomes no show the first half of the afc championship game. Our team is too reliant on one person because of the way its built

Dak is Romo 2.0. A manageable QB who is a short term solution until the franchise guy is found. And like Romo, ppl like RJ think we should continuously pass up the chance of finding the future of the franchise for another bum average season with a guy who can't get the job done. Even with all the pieces around him. After this season, I would rather have a rookie play for this team going forward. With that said, I would rather have a new blogging the boys host than RJ after this season if Dak isn't playing for Dallas in 2025-2026. RJ provides no insight. And I can only imagine what drives him to keep promoting a mid-tier QB to stay on the roster. After we go 10-7 this year and lose in the playoffs, I'm sure RJ will make a video on why that's not Dak fault either. RJ & Dak's Cowboys affiliation should be directly correlated at this point.

🤠 could save 💰 for the sake of saving 💰 by signing Dak to extension sooner, but it only makes sense IF he can win in the post season. That is a big IF. Extension for more of the same ? Ouch.

The problem with this thinking is that you're treating Dak Prescott as the sole reason for not winning in the playoffs which simply isn't true

@@TheFlowman I’m a Dak fan. He is not the sole reason. However, the franchise QB is the most important piece to reach & win the SB, & are the highest paid player on every team by far. Dak has been the 🤠 QB for the past 8 years with 2 play off wins vs 5 losses. Big enough sample size indicating a possible ceiling ? Pay him more & extend him ?

I don't think they will resign him. Sign Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb and Osa Odighizuwa. Let Trey Lance take the reigns in 2025 and draft a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft to compete with Lance. Some prospects are QB Shedeur Sanders 6'2 215 Colorado, Cade Klubnik 6'2 215 Clemson, Jalen Milroe 6'2 225 Alabama or Riley Leonard 6'4 215 Notre Dame.

This is just lazy reporting by the author of the article. First it assumes that the player is always willing to negotiate. You say the market does nothing but go up, do you think that the player and their agents don't know that as well? Let's review the history here. In fact the Dallas Cowboys did offer Dak Prescott a contract in 2019 that was for more money than Jared Goff or Carson Wentz. Prescott refused to sign. Wentz and Goff signed four years extensions but also had a fifth year option on their existing contract. This gave the Rams and the Eagles better salary cap flexibility as they could prorate the bonus over more years and not use void years. Because Prescott was not a first-round pick he did not have a fifth year option. The Cowboys wanted him to add one extra year to his extension to give them the same competitive flexibility that the Eagles and Rams had with Jared Goff and Carson Wentz. Prescott refused. Saying that the Cowboys were not being proactive in this case is simply inaccurate unless your definition of proactive is giving the player everything they want. Let's move forward to present day. Dak Prescott has publicly stated that he is not interested in negotiating at this time. By contrast Stephen Jones has said that signing Dak Prescott is a priority and they like to get it done as soon as possible preferably before the season starts. I asked you how is the team supposed to be proactive when the player and their agent refused to negotiate? Prescott knows his biggest offer is going to come when he is an unrestricted free agent and don't expect any deal to get done with Dallas until at least the legal tampering period next year. At this point Prescott will have a good idea of what other teams are willing to offer and he will come back to Dallas and say match this or I will leave. Prescott is 30 years old and undoubtedly wants at least one more bite at the Apple after this one. so I suspect he will only sign a 3-year extension likely in the 60 to 65 million range making it virtually impossible for the Cowboys to manage the cap in a responsible fashion. As I said at the beginning the fundamental underlying problem with this poorly conceived article is that it assumes that the player is always willing to negotiate in good faith and capitulate to a team offer
