That scene with Miss Ellie smashing dishes and cups in the kitchen & breaking down like that at the realization that Jock is really gone, really captured grief in its rawest form!! Anyone who's lost someone that they love could truly relate to that powerful scene!! Barbara Bel Geddes was a great actress! You know it's great acting when you could feel the weight of her inconsolable grief upon coming to the realization of Jock's death. She captured Miss Ellie's anguish perfectly. It's like the good Lord put Miss Bel Geddes on this earth to play Eleanor Southworth Ewing! And to the 7 who downvoted this, you might as well deny the reflection of your own face in the mirror if you don't think this is great acting!

The first time I ever saw my mother cry was right after my father passed away. I was in my late 40s and it affected me as if I were a small child. My parents had been married for 59 years. It is very difficult to watch someone hurting after the death of someone that they love and have made memories with for so many years.
@brothergaryii11 жыл бұрын
Barbara Bel Geddes was relating to her character, because she knew that Miss Ellie had loved her Jock so much until the day she had lost him (this was because in real-life Jim Davis had passed away & producers of Dallas had to find somebody for Barbara). Her character needed to stay single for a while, but eventually they got another movie star - Howard Keel - to fill his void. He loved Dallas, as much as he loved dancing & Barbara.

Poor JR! Ray, Bobby & Miss Ellie and the other members of the family were, did and here helped each other over the grieving process were JR had to do it alone holding Jocks chain. And people wonder why JR is evil, twisted, bitter, resentful & vicous. Buisness was all he had. This and the next 2 episode is ome of Larry Hagmans best work. Tell me the real Dallas fans who didn't have a lump in there throat when JR alone with the chain wells up devastated because I feel theres a lot of Larry Hagmans true emotions there. That's not just acting that's emotions. RIP Jim Davis, RIP Larry Hagman, RIP Barbara Bel Geddes!
@jephybean6 жыл бұрын
JR didn't have to stick to himself and not share. He was always a greedy boy from his teenage years. He embraced being closed off because it kept him safe. Now, whether that was healthy or not, or even conditioned or not, but it was certainly his choice. But picking up on what you said, I did appreciate the scenes where he softens - particularly with Bobby. Larry Hagman was so amazing for playing such a complex and layered individual. It is rare to pull that off. I've seen it a few times over the years where an actor gives such depth and layers, and you can see the flickering aspects of personalities and emotional processing of the character in a scene by an actor. Larry was one just one of those guys. Yes, JR grieved alone and it was sad and poignant, but I didn't necessarily feel sorry for him because he had to grieve alone because he didn't have to. lol All his family ever wanted from him and FOR HIM was for JR to be open and loving. They didn't give him shit just to give him shit, they were tired of HIS shit most of the time, but they still loved him. But if he would've straightened up and been a good boy, then Dallas would NEVER have been the same. lol
@laminage6 жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely. On The Dallas Reunion Special, he talked about how he was like their Captain in the early days of the show. When JR looked up at the sky when they came back, you knew that JR would never be the same without his "Daddy".

I think it was cruel of the producers to make Miss Ellie's grieve over Jock's death in the spring of 1982 in front of the camera. Barbara Bel Geddes, was grieving in private over Jim Davis's death in the summer of 1981. Why would they make her grieve again in front of the camera. I do not understand that. Any one's thought on that, please let me know.
@jephybean6 жыл бұрын
Prime time shows shoot (film) at least 3-4 months in advance, at least! That coupled with the reality that the stars were given real time to grieve before tapping into those raw emotions for such scenes. Sure, it would be amazing to see that kind of raw emotion being used to create art for a story line that mirrors the real thing, but in a way, it's also tacky... it was much more respectful for the producers to allow the cast to grieve on their own and process their emotions rather than exploiting them for ratings, wouldn't you agree? plus, it might be detrimental to one's personal and emotional well being if someone uses that kind of emotion for performance when it is so raw before they actually have time to process their personal feelings. After all, it is an actor's job to pull on emotions and bring them back. She did that. If you think she would've done it better when she was really feeling devastated, that's knocking her ability and also suggesting you think she should have been exploited and used like a tool in a factory. Now, I know you weren't saying that so no need to respond. ;-)
