Saddest scene in Dallas. Makes me sad for the character, but especially Jim Davis the real person. He had worked hard in the industry his entire life and finally hit the jackpot with Dallas at the end. I wish he could have lived longer and had a chance to enjoy his new fame and fortune a few more years. In interviews, and photos of him at his real home with his wife, he seemed like just a regular hard working guy you could hang out and share a beer with. I read that after his daughter was killed in a car accident that he hit the bottle pretty hard, and John Wayne started casting him in some of his movies to keep him busy.

I’m not sure America had ever before or has sense ever grieved the loss of a fictitious character who seemed so real to so many people, as was the case with “Jock Ewing”. This was national grief. It felt like somebody kicked a pillar out of something that people could not envision letting go of. As these characters struggled with the loss, so did viewers. Jim Davis’s death and the void it left in this series was a very big deal, and adjusting to his absence was not something ANYBODY was ready to do. People really felt like they had lost somebody they knew personally.

I think that they will replicate this storyline for the new Dallas. Or, it could go like this: JR goes off on a business trip elsewhere in Texas and dies of a heart attack during the meeting. John Ross would then receive a phone call saying his dad has died and breaks the news to the rest of the family. The family would then travel over there to arrange for his body to be flown back to Southfork for the funeral. Several characters from the past could then be brought back.
